2016-06-24 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
I have started using FCP Euro of late when I can get something OEM aftermarket,
such as a fan clutch for the W140. I have been pleased with their service, but
more so, their responsiveness when you make an inquiry.

I would also say that they appear to be making a serious effort to meet the
needs of their customers. I say this due to a recent exchange I had with their
marketing guy. I got an email from them listing their five best recommended
specialty MB tools. They asked for suggestions if you had others to add to the
list. I emailed him and suggested the Hazet drain plug wrench.

Within a couple of hours I got an enthusiast response from them thanking me for
the suggestion and expressing surprise that they didn't offer it. They'll be
adding it to their catalog shortly.

Re: [MBZ] Comments on FCP Euro

2016-06-23 Thread Scott Ritchey via Mercedes
This is a report on my order from FCP Euro. This shipment arrived today and
here's what I got:
* The flex disks were Febi Bilstein (FCP only claimed they were OEM).
The box says assembled in Germany from German and Polish parts. The actual
flex disk has "Made in Germany" molded into the rubber.
* The steering damper came in a plain box but STABILUS and "Made in
Germany" are printed on the part.
* All the other suspension parts came in Lemforder boxes.
* The Guide rod mount boxes say "Made in Italy."
* The Guide rod repair kit (attaches to LCA) boxes say "Made in Poland."
* The LCA ball joint boxes say "Made in Germany."
* The LCA inner bushing boxes say "Made in Italy."
* The idler arm kit box says "Made in Germany."
I didn’t see any indication of Asian sources but I didn’t inspect the actual
parts thoroughly. I believe all boxes had the web address www.zf.com
which is a German car parts company.

Also. I accidently ordered a CV joint kit (mistaking it for a drive shaft
center bearing kit) and easily cancelled that part of the order online (and got
a refund) before it shipped. I paid an extra $10 for UPS and delivery was 3
1/2 business days.

I don’t know any way to assess the quality of these rubber parts without
actually using them but I suspect they are OK, or at least as good as is now
available for my 35-year-old car. If anyone knows better, please educate me.
Thanks.

Cheers, Scott

Scott,

In my opinion something as critical as a flex disk I would only buy from the
dealer. Accord to the MB of Atlanta EPC your flex disk is $112.00, part number
1264100215. Febi and Meyle aftermarket kits are around $46.00, which is where
I would expect them to be compared to factory parts.

Jamie,
Perhaps you can give me advice on this. I have an 82 SD with about 250K
miles; the flex disks and suspension rubber are original. The flex disks show
some cracks and sometimes I can hear/feel some mild clunking from the back seat
during gear shifts. I assume the clunking is the center bearing mount on the
driveshaft (or possibly the differential mount). The car is still great on the
road but doesn't feel as "tight" as 20 years ago. I have not found structural
rust but there is rust under the rear window gasket and the paint is getting
thin on top. The engine seems fine. I think the car is worth some restoration.
Is this Lemforder rubber is crap? Is the new stuff likely to be worse than
the 35-year-old parts in the car now? I don't mind the labor but I only want
to do it once. Is there a source for good-quality rubber bits for this model?
I’d rather overpay for a part that will last decades than wish I'd left it
alone. I'd rather write-off the parts I already ordered than install crap.
Thanks.

Being made offshore isn't in itself a problem, the problem is that most Chinese
manufacturers don't do much QC so a lot of crap gets through. Watch Big Clive
on YouTube for fun examples.
If you can force your supplier into doing QC or do it yourself they can make
whatever quality level you want.

Even though they’re Lëmforder? I ask because the last thing Rusty sold me were
Lëmforder engine mounts for the S500 coupe, and when I opened hem up they had
markings on them that indicated they were made in Taiwan or China.

I’m wondering if their stuff is being made offshore these days?

think the rubber parts are supposed to be Lemforder, which may be as good as it
gets these days for such an old model. Tie rods and UCAs not included but
those can be replaced later one-at-a time if needed. I'll report back if I

The lower ball joints press into the steering knuckle, not the LCA.
Replacing the whole LCA does avoid pressing in the inboard bushing. In
either case you need the spring compressor, a good one.

2016-06-17 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
I've found the idler arm bushing in particular to be important to replace. I've
had 2 fail and when they go the steering gets VERY touchy all of a sudden.
Fortunately they're easy to replace other than all the crap that falls in your
face while you're doing it. Harbor Freight sells a cheap face shield thats
totally worth having when working under the car.
I think it was on this list that I discovered the idea of using castor oil to
lube the rubber parts which makes assembly a snap.

If you've got to replace all those parts on the front control arms, compare
the cost of entire new arm. Special tools and labor required for all those
ball joints and bushings, you can save a lot of time and effort if you buy
a new control arm and all that stuff is already installed.
