Tumblers for older cars not stocked in the US (meaning it has to be
ordered from Germany) do NOT come with a key, you have to buy one
separately. Newer cars, where the tumbler is stocked, have a key with
them.

I do not know why, and will not speculate, but I've been assured this
is the case.

Re: [MBZ] Got Tumbler but no Key

2006-01-22 Thread Werner Fehlauer
The South Jersey Section had a tech event last year, to tour the new MBUSA
Master Regional Parts Distribution Center in Robbinsville, NJ. This is
intended to be the entry and distribution point for all M-B parts in North
America, and operates as a secure foreign trade zone. It also replaces the
Baltimore facility. Fully automated, and neat as a pin! They receive and
ship by big containers though the Bayonne port, FedEx air, and US trucking
lines.
AFAIK, there weren't any Chrysler parts there, with the exception of SLK
parts used in both lines, etc.

Yep, they centralized all of the parts warehouses when they merged
Chrysler

parts warehouses with Mercedes parts warehouses.

An interesting piece of trivia - my Wife works at the Milwaukee depot, one
of three super warehouses run by Diamler-Chrysler. And generally speaking,
Mercedes parts cost less than Chrysler parts at the wholesale level.

2006-01-21 Thread Brian Chase

That sounds familiar.

The PN for the LOCK CY is: 123-462-00-79

The separate key I ordered for an extra has PN either Q 4 76 0037 (crossed
out by hand) or 1755696 (written in by hand) ?

I believe Rusty can get generic ign or door sets, but the last time I
checked, he was unable to provide keys by VIN or code.

Brian, publish the MB part number and someone can probably determine if it
is a lock and key, or lock only.

Brian, publish the MB part number and someone can probably
determine if it

is a lock and key, or lock only.

Anyone can get lock cylinders VIN matched from your local friendly
dealer.

Key should not come with VIN matched cylinder unless ordered. (they
will come from 2 different places, as MB must actually set-up the
lock cylinder at their secret lock facility).

A key will come with a lock cylinder that is not coded to the VIN.

Keys coded to the VIN can be purchased separately.

Yep, they centralized all of the parts warehouses when they merged Chrysler
parts warehouses with Mercedes parts warehouses.

An interesting piece of trivia - my Wife works at the Milwaukee depot, one
of three super warehouses run by Diamler-Chrysler. And generally speaking,
Mercedes parts cost less than Chrysler parts at the wholesale level.

'Preciate the concise info. Actually my deal is that I ordered a lock
cylinder (coded to my VIN) and was told by the rep that it would come with a
key too (obviously also coded to my VIN) I paid some $85 for this. It did
not come with a key. Just the cylinder was sent. I called him and asked
what's up - he basically said, his bad - that he told me the wrong thing,
and that in fact, the option to order the cylinder coded to VIN should not
come with a key. And the option to order a cyl. and a key together would not
yield a set coded to an existing VIN.

Fortunately, I had ordered an extra key (coded) (arrived separately and
several days earlier than cyl.). So all told, I have the cylinder
(supposedly coded to my VIN) and one key (also supposedly coded to my VIN).
I haven't confirmed that they work yet.

What and where is this secret lock facility? They told me that the cyl.
would come from Germany via Texas, and that it may take 6 - 8 weeks, but
they could not say for sure how long it'd take. It actually only took about
a coulpe weeks.

Brian, publish the MB part number and someone can probably

is a lock and key, or lock only.

The EPC always identifies the tumblers as less key, but they do come
with a key. The dealer parts guy says that when the code the lock, the
only way to test it is to cut a key for it. So they cut a key, test
the lock, and then ship it with the key. Either MB recently changed
it's policy somehow (which I doubt), somebody goofed up, or the
dealership thinks they need to remove the key since the EPC said it
wasn't supposed to include one. You *did* buy this from a Mercedes

Okay, then I think the question here becomes: How much did you pay,
Marshall? Perhaps the price I paid for the cylinder ($85) was not the price
for a cyl. and a key. I thought the list had told me in the past that I'd be
looking at some $120 for a cylinder and key (coded to my VIN).

Prices have gone up at LEAST several times since I bought the most
recent one of mine, but the cost of the tumbler AND key was about 4X the
cost of a key alone.

Dealers are NOT required to sell parts at the suggested list price that
Mercedes publishes and many mark them up 25-100% above list. They can
choose to sell them for whatever they can get for them. When there is NO
competition, some go crazy. When there were 5 Mercedes dealers within
the Pittsburgh metropolitan area, prices were quite respectable and you
could bargain. Now there is not a single Mercedes dealer in Allegheny
county (Pittsburgh and 128 other municipalities comprise All'y Co) with
the 4 surrounding dealerships 20-40 miles outside the city and all of
them change list+ for parts.

I confess not to have caught all of this thread, but something is fishy
here. Last time I ordered a lock cylinder for my 123, the dealer said
it would come from Maryland. (This was in West Virginia and that was the
nearest dist center.) He was a nice guy and always flagged my orders as
expedite and I had it less than a week, maybe a couple days. This was
in 2001 or '02 and I think the cost was $77 (can't find the receipt
right now). It came with a key.

Tumblers for older cars not stocked in the US (meaning it has to be
ordered from Germany) do NOT come with a key, you have to buy one
separately. Newer cars, where the tumbler is stocked, have a key with

I do not know why, and will not speculate, but I've been assured this

All of the tumblers I ordered were for 201/124s (and came from Baltimore
