Can't remember when I last saw one of the old oil cans
that went boink when you pressed on the bottom..
That's what I keep my M1 5W20 in! (Found it in the garage of
the house after I bought it.)

You are forgetting the list tradition. And that reminds me, what is the
correct oil for my '77 240D?

Don, the correct oil for your 240D is castor oil Put in 6.5 qts, then
drink the last 0.5 qt. List tradition!
BTW, did you go see the Blimp?

On 9/26/06,
I've been using Dollar General $.99/quart 30-weight stuff. Can I still start
in the -20F winter temps?

sure, just aim one propane torch at the oil pan and another at the head for
an hour or so, then start. (don't do this at home! Leave it to the
pros) Better to use that castor oil!

they're fine - used them w/o issue.

I think that this has been hashed over many times. But, I'll say it
again. Since about 1971 or 1972 when the Mann+Hummel factory burned to
the ground and Mercedes was back ordering filters to MB dealers
worldwide, Knecht, Hengst Mahle were added to Mercedes list of genuine
filter manufacturers.
they're fine - used them w/o issue.
