At camp theres a Lowes thats failing. Their service is terrible. The local
hardware/lumberyard, Collins (like Susan Collins, the senator from Maine) is
going gangbusters but its all on service. When you buy lumber the salesperson
takes you out to the lumberyard and helps you select your wood. If wood gets
returned because its bad its a ding against the salesman (always the guys, the
women are better wood pickers) so they work to make sure you get the best stuff.
Its a good system and if you don't know what you want they take you out into
the yard and talk about what they've got and what might work for your job. All
the wood is covered and its dry. I've bought 2x4s at Lowes that weighed two or
three times what they should with water...

Given a choice between buying stuff at home despot, lows or maynerds, I
would still choose maynerds. If the founder of maynerds is an
egotistical jerk, he is right there with Dead sam the walton without a
mountain. Whoever runs lows and home despot are likely to be just as
much of a maniac.
When I added on to the house, I bought from the local lumberyard. When
I built my house (different one) I got what I could from the local
yard, and the rest came from a small chain of lumberyards. I have to
go 30+ miles to get to a maynerds, so they don't get much money from
me. Lows is about 5 miles or so. We don't have amy good hardware
stores, so most of the hardware store stuff has to come from lows.
