On our Kenworth W900 with the Caterpillar 3406E, one of the things
The Shop in Moriarty suggested doing, and which suggestion I approved,
was putting ball valves in the hot water lines for that exact purpose.

On the E300, you could get a radiator hose clamp from FLAPS and pinch off The

Tomorrow I need to bypass the duovalve or monovalve or whatever the $500E300

Most likely, especially if they're exactly equal. Not sure

A corroded connection or bad wire can read good with the low current of

In about to set this 95 e300 on fire. All tests point to bad pbu, yet I
would think if by my figuring you jump pin 7 and 13 on the left harness in
the car compressor should kick on, it doesn't. I get about .6 volts at
those connection as same as I get at the pressure switch. If I put positive
at pin 13 which goes to fuse 7 and run a wire wire direct to ground I get
12v. If ground plug in the pressure switch on the Klima side of the switch
compressor kicks on. If I have the switch hooked up and ground pin 7 in the
car with a wire running direct to ground compressor kicks on. I have tested
continuity between all wires the one from pin 7 in car to pressure switch,
it's fine, from other side of pressure switch to pin 10 on Klima it's fine,
from pin 1 on Klima to ground it's fine. That seems to be all the legs of
the circuit right? Maybe I need to test from pin 13 to fuse 7 in the fuse
box? Seems with positive of meter on pin 13 and neg to ground and I get
12v that would indicate that wire is fine too, right? What piece of the
puzzle am I not getting. If all these wires seems to be fine then why won't
compressor kick on if pin 13 at pbu harness which comes from fuse 7 is
jumped to pin 7 which goes out to the pressur switch then on to the Klima
why won't that kick on the compressor? Maybe my limited electrical ability
is confusing me? Or is there more to the pbu kicking on the compressor that
that? Would the wires seem to test fine but still be bad or shorted or
 something?

Hmm. This sort of answers my first questions. I guess the
0.6 was between the 7 and 13. That would be the correct
reading if the PBU is using a transistor as a switch.

If ground plug in the pressure switch on the Klima side of
 the switch compressor kicks on.

Ah! That says the KLIMA is the hold-out, since bypassing it
makes the compressor turn on. Does the PBU connect to the
KLIMA directly?

Maybe I need to test from pin 13 to fuse 7 in the fuse

With ordinary electric - yes. But a transistor switch in
the PBU could have a little bit of current leak through that
would show up on a meter - but not be enough to actually _do_
anything.

I don't have a wiring diagram, so I'm just basing my guesses on
what you are telling us.

Odd. Mine doesn't go around the barrel, it goes down inside
and over the pin. Works fine on tires and AC valves. Cheap
thing, too. Hemostats work, too. I've had several valves that
were loose and that's all the significant leak there was. The
vibration and heat cycling works them loose with time.

No, they're not exactly the same. Very similar. I think NAPA
carries them. It's where the local rip-off AC shop gets their stuff.

With the intention to resurrect the system, I bought some servicing
equiptment from Harbor Freight (vacuum pump and manifold gauge set).

Last week I put a new belt on and attached the gauges. No pressure on
the high side and minimal residual pressure on the low side.

I vacuumed the system for half an hour. Closing the valves, it appeared
to be holding.

I charged the system and got some cooling. Pressures looked good but
never got really cold vent temps (I got maybe into the 50s). I did
notice that a lot of the cool air was being diverted to the defrost
vents because water started condensing on the windshield.

I did not really use the AC much on the road because the cooling was so
marginal it was more comfortable to just have the windows open.

Today I put the gauges back on and there was virtually no pressure in
the system. So I've got a major leak somewhere, as the entire charge
was lost in about 5 days, without even having had the AC on much in that
time.

What's the best way to isolate the leak or identify the source?

Effectiveness will suck if the defrost vents don't close.
You need to deal with that. Vent temps on a 123 can get
down to 39 degrees on a long freeway. That's what I get
with the test refrigerant, anyway.

You know it's only supposed to come on when the AC system
gets 'too hot', right? It may be normal that it not come on
for you, except sometimes. My 114 didn't have any switch on
the AC system, since Yorks don't need a low-pressure safety
switch and early cars didn't couple the auxiliary fan to the
AC system. I added a later high-temperature switch to my
drier, and cobbled it into the existing aux fan wiring. It
required a diode, as I recall, to isolate the existing aux
fan relay from other circuitry. (The car's overtemperature
switch kicks on the fan and changes the engine timing, and I
only wanted the fan to come on.)

I am getting air out of the driver's side vent and the centre vent
but nothing from the passenger side vent.

Re: [MBZ] More AC questions

2006-07-31 Thread R A Bennell
I think it should be coming on. We were running the car in the garage and
watching the temperature of the engine
and of the cold air out of the vent. At one point the compressor was trying to
lock up and it stalled the car when
I tried to back out of the garage. My mechanic brother in law (he is a
licenced mechanic with a fair amount of AC
experience but no experience on old MB's) thinks that the fan should come on
and help cool the AC. It seems to be
fine when the car is moving and has air flowing through the rad.

The vent lever was working before we had the AC working. Lever shuts off flow
of vent. Now however, with the AC on
there is no airflow from the vent.

Will try to take another look at it this evening.
