It's a nice looking radio. You can even get a PDF of the User Manual on
that page, which is much more than a user manual -- it has dial cord
stringing information, signal-generator alignment specs, and a schematic.

Yeah they were usually CB channel 14 IIRC, and low power. Was lucky to get a
couple of hundred yards range on the ones I had as a kid.

I recall when I was maybe 16 my cousin got a pair of walkie talkies for
Christmas. We were messing around with them that night. It was very clear and
very cold. This was in KY. I thought hey we need a bigger antenna! So I
stuck the WT antenna on the TV antenna mast and all the sudden we were picking
up chatter between 2 guys, one in Maine and one somewhere else I forget.

We listened a bit then I decided to join in and started saying stupid stuff in
the WT. apparently they picked it up (what were these things, 1/2watt?) and got
really upset and started yelling at us, threatening to get the FCC on us etc.
so we quit but I thought it was pretty amazing this little radio was
transmitting 100s of miles.

When I was a sophomore in college, I set up my Hallicrafters SX-38C and
tuned in a shortwave teletype news station. I then fed the audio to a
diode and a very sensitive relay and used the relay's contacts to provide
power to an ASR-33's input.

When tuned properly (with the correct part of the audio shift keying set
to zero beat), the teletype printed out the news, even before radio and
television stations broadcast it.

14.4? Kids these days. I used to _dream_ of 14.4...
When _I_ got home internet 2400 baud was the good stuff,
and uphill both ways! (Pre-internet I was using 300 baud
through an acoustic coupler. But it meant that I didn't have
to leave my dorm room and trek to an on-campus center.
Well, sometimes.)

And when I got the synchronous 9600 baud X.25 connection going
it was multi-channel heaven! WFH was 90% as good as WFW.
