Around here after 3 or 4 years they fall down after a heavy wet snowfall.
A friend had two, one fell down and damaged his prized Mercury Marauder during
a heavy wet snow, the other had a small tree fall on it and damage his boat. I
don't want one...

The fabric buildings are becoming very popular.  Thye are popping up all
over the country.  For a garage, shop, storage etc, they are great.
People build concrete or T treated lumber walls, then put the building
on top.  They are warmer in the winter, lighter inside to work in the
daytime, and often cooler in the summer than alternatives.  They can be
made rodent proof and bug proof.  Many are being used for grain storage.

They're also not terribly theft proof... We're 3/4 mile from the road, the
idjits get in there and try to mess stuff up. Or used to anyway, increased
vigilance on the part of the neighbors has cut down on that a lot.
Anyway this is a long term plan, storage for the new tractor and possibly a
farm truck...

A one-wire Delco typically has a special self-exiting regulator.
Usually this requires at least 2000-3000 RPM (at the alternator) to
"trigger" the self-excitation and start working. 2, or 3 wire will
work at much lower RPM.

I prefer the 3 wire. Set up correctly with the remote voltage
sensing for the regulator connected to the main feedpoint for the
rest of the electrical system, the battery will get properly
changed even if there is a heavy electrical load elsewhere. And
the "idiot" ALT light on the dash is much more accurate than the
ammeter with regard to identifying when the alternator isn't
working right.

I really do like the Delco "si" alternators (10, 12, 15, 17, etc).

Re: [MBZ] OT: I'm back!

2016-06-06 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
Yeah we used the 1 wire Delco, its pretty well hidden under the hood. The
wiring loom is all hidden in weaved tube that hides it pretty good. The only
giveaway for now is the resistor bank that provides 6v to the coil. I bought a
12v coil but figured I'd get it running with the old coil to try to not change
too many things at once...
Ours has an inline gizmo so no light to excite the alternator, sano...

waytago!  for the 12v conversion.  I did that last year on my H, after much
soul searching about keeping it original.  Did you use the small Japanee
alternator that fits under the hood?  With period wiring and wire loom, it
still looks original except for the new red light on the control panel with the
headllight switch.  it is an idiot light that doubles as the exciter circuit
for the alt.  Same as on most cars and on my BMW R75/5.  The ammeter is still
in place and functional.

For last year's tractor ride, the H got lots of work before and after the ride.
For this year, it is getting an umbrella for operator comfort.

Curt Raymond via Mercedes June 5, 2016 at 11:10 AM via Postbox Spent the
last two weeks at camp in Maine where my cell phone didn't have reception,
though strangely Angie's did and we're on the same carrier...
Anyway some highlights:'52 Farmall Super M repairs, valve cover gasket,
finalized 12v conversion, replaced starter, got 2 of 3 lights working,
installed the cleaned and sealed gas tank, ruined sediment bowl, replaced same,
replaced leaking valve core, applied teflon tape to valve stem cap when the
replaced valve core wouldn't seal. Plowed and harrowed about 1/8 acre for
planting peas, mowed about 10 acres.
Transplanted 20 trees from random spots around the farm into our tree
plantation.
Tried to convinced Dad to buy a new diesel New Holland tractor, might be nearly
there.
Trimmed and thinned trees.
The starter on the Super M is the prime story of the trip, the starter failed
last year and dad bought a replacement, that lasted about 3 starts until it
totally locked up. He finally took it apart and realized that when the
"rebuilder" went through it they'd used Locktite on the INSIDE of the bushing
on the main shaft instead of the outside. Fortunately they used regular
strength so it came off with a little heat. They musta used a lot, it came off
in a sheet. Starter works slick now with the 12v conversion, it really spins
the engine over fast, makes for easy starts.
Anyway two weeks let me get caught up some on a lot of the projects that had
gotten ahead of me but I could have even used another couple weeks. I keep
telling my boss that one of these trips I'm not going to come back...
Oh we also got a logger to come in and start taking trees. Our neighbor had a
bunch of trees cut so the loggers got to just keep on rolling. We figure
they're going to take something like 200 cords. Should mostly pay for the
tractor mentioned above but we'll need another building to put it in. Looking
at maybe a quonset hut in the size of a 2 car garage...
