My $30 router/modem has (partially) died after just a few years.
Suggestions on a replacement? I liked having both DSL modem and wireless
router in one package, but if a good argument can be made for splitting
them up, I'm open to that.
DSL modems tend to have poor integrated wireless APs. Using a modem
as a modem allows you to replace it when you need to do so, likewise
using a wireless access point allows you to upgrade (11ac, 5GHz,
antennas, better distance, whatever).
I liked my Asus RT-N13u well enough. My Linksys 11ac model is faster
and has 5GHz. Before that I used an 11n Belkin for several years.
Most of the internal chipsets are similar, and will have similar
issues, so grabbing any brand-name consumer router is probably a
reasonable choice. Once you have it set up you shouldn't have to look
at the horrid UI again. Many routers are supported by DD-WRT if you
have a yearning to hack your network, so if you are shopping that
might be worth checking.

Tim
