Pilot’s artificial arm detached while landing

Incident happened on British carrier Flybe during 47-passenger flight
from Birmingham to Belfast, says air-accident agency

LONDON — A British air accident report has recounted how a pilot lost
control of a passenger plane after his artificial arm became detached
during landing.

The report says the incident took place as the Flybe flight from
Birmingham, carrying 47 passengers, was approaching Belfast City
Airport in gusty conditions in February.

The 46-year-old pilot had shortly before checked that his prosthetic
lower left arm was securely attached to the yoke clamp, but as he
performed a maneuver just before touchdown the limb became detached.

The Air Accidents Investigation Branch said Thursday he then moved his
right hand to the yoke to regain control. Winds caused the plane to
land heavily with a bounce.

No one was hurt in the incident.

I wonder if he could even get a private pilots license in the U.S.?

Federal Air Regulation #1: When the gross weight of the paper meets or
exceeds the gross weight of the aircraft, FAA may grant approval.

I note the pilot was age 46, which I take to mean he applied for approval
to fly with the artificial limb at age 20, got approved at age 35, and
could only fly with the one FAA [UK equivalent] approved artificial limb
which was certified for flight, no substitute permitted. It had to be
inspected pursuant to it's own overhaul manual and repair cycle by the one
FAA approved and licensed shop which is now closed for FAA incident
investigation. etc etc etc.

I'm from the FAA, and I'm here to help you. Remember, we're not happy
until you're not happy

What amazed me is that this guy is an ATP flying passengers, with an
artificial arm doing part of the flying.

Possibly. There was a girl without arms who flew using her feet and got a
pilots license - with the condition that the aircraft be fitted to meet her
needs. I think she flew an aircoupe (sp?) - no rudder pedals.
