Weird, here its the opposite, debit cards get preauthorized for $50-$75 which
can take days to get worked out.
Loads of people complain about bouncing checks because of that...

I seem to remember pump signage locally that said $50 limit
on Visa, $75 limit on M/C. If you want 30 gallons of $4 diesel,
Just put $75 on your M/C and the rest on your Visa.
The MasterCard limit is higher. I don't have a MasterCard, only VISA
and Discover.
I don't think it has anything to do with whether it's a credit or debit
card.
Now that I think about it, I don't recall seeing any limits posted with
regards to Discover maybe I'll try that card next time.
Allan
I regularly go over that amount. Mine is a VISA debit.

No limit issues for me, but typically, when I see the pump, the guy ahead of
me (poor guy) pumped $200 worth.
Have nor seen that here in Dallas for at least a year or so. My experience
with it was always dependent on the station. The first one that I noticed it

Do not believe it to be related to any kind of a 'credit limit ' on my card,

The Hess by my house does an automatic hold on any
credit card for $75 minimum, according to them it's to
prevent driveoffs (whaahh?)
Use a debit card and there's no hold.

Never had a problem yet. What happens, pump shut off or something?
I just filled up at the Marathon, but went inside as that particular
station doesn't have pay at the pump for diesel.

Yes the pump shuts off at $50. You have to put the nozzle back,
complete the transaction, then start another transaction if you want
to finish filling up. I usually just take

That is the main reason I use cards is for pay at the pump!!! I really
dislike diesel stations that don't have pay at the pump... I don't
usually want to deal with the extra time and

OK
It might have something to do with pre-authorizations on pay at pump. I
discovered the authorization before pumping last summer was $100. on the
diesel pump. Then, the amount of actual purchase is authorized. Sometimes it
takes several business days for that first amount to be released.

Around here (Northwest Indiana) it seems to be a station by station thing. Some
have limits, some don't.
