I fear you're right Dave.

Trouble is, we have a Democrat running against a socialist. And McCains
recent reversals on some issues are as troubling a obamas claims that are in
opposition to his past voting record.

I don't like or trust either one but will probably vote for the one that
scares me the least -

My biggest disappointment is the media's inability to do their job
professionally without taking sides. IMO the media should present the facts
on all the candidates equally. We should see Bob Barr at the debates and
hear about his positions on various issues.

Most people don't even know he's running much less who he is.

Third, even if you're one of the rare business owners making enough
money

to
be affected by Obama's proposed tax increases, you still won't see a big
hike in your tax bill.* *

McCain's claim that Obama will increase taxes on 50% of small business
revenue - the line he used in the second presidential debate - is
incorrect
because of how income is taxed.

If a business owner falls into the top bracket, that doesn't mean that
all

of his or her income is taxed at the highest level.

For example: If a small-business owner makes $210,000 in taxable income,
he
edges into the 33% bracket, one of the two top tax rates that Obama
would

like to raise.

But he would pay the higher tax only on the amount that exceeds the
cutoff

-
in 2007, the two top tax rates applied to single filers with income of
$160,850 or more and joint filers with income of at least $195,850. As a
single filer, this business owner would see his federal taxes increase
$1,475 under Obama's plan, which calls for raising the 33% tax rate to
36%.
While Obama does favor raising the top two rates, the quote is not true
because not all the small business income of those in the top two rates
is
taxed at the 33% and 35% rates, said Gerald Prante, a senior economist
at

the nonpartisan Tax Foundation.

The bottom line: McCain's claim only works by using an overly broad
definition of what counts as a small business - and even with that
definition, fewer than 2% of business owners would be hit by Obama's
proposed rate increase. For those who are affected, the increase would
be

levied only on a part of their earnings, not all of them.

UPDATE, Oct. 17: The Wall Street Journal's Jonathan Weisman has more
detail on the company Wurzelbacher hope to buy someday:

The company, A.W. Newell Inc., with two employees, Al Newell and
Mr. Wurzelbacher, reported sales this year of $100,000. On sales of
that volume, a firm that size could expect to earn about a 6% profit,
or $6,000, after salaries and costs are taken out, according to Lee
Smither, managing director of FMI Corp., a Raleigh, N.C.,
management-consulting firm for construction contractors. The average
income of plumbers, pipefitters and steamfitters in 2006 was $48,002,
according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Earlier, I'd taken Wurzelbacher's claim that A.W. Newell, Inc. makes
more than $250,000 a year to mean that sales exceed $250,000. Turns
out Wurzelbacher's statement was misleading: $250,000 is the net worth
of the company. Sales are only $100,000. Which means that Joe the
Small-Business Owner won't rake in anywhere near $100,000; he'll
simply net an additional $6,000 (i.e. the company's profits) on top of
his old salary of about $40,000. Ultimately, then, Joe the
Small-Business Owner would be in the same boat as Joe the Plumber:
that is, getting a tax cut of $1,042 from Obama and $319 from McCain.
For Wurzelbacher to take home the $200,000-$250,000 required to
trigger Obama's proposed tax increases, according to the Journal, a
mom-and-pop plumbing company like Newell would have to clear $5
million in annual sales.

2008-10-17 Thread Loren Faeth
Osama Bama spent today disparaging plumbers, and ordinary Americans
in general. He insinuated that no plumber could ever gross 250k a
year. It is quite obvious the Bama bum has never worked a day in his
life and has no idea what it takes to run a business. This elietist
Marxist prick is getting more annoying to listen to than Hillary the

his middle name Hussein.

Watch the vid, you can find it on youtube. Basically Joe asked about
the 250k thing and taxes, said he wanted to buy a business and grow it,
would get into that bracket, a few words were spoken on that regarding
those who work and those who don't, then Barry said, we need to spread
the wealth around. Wealth redistribution, Marxism pure and simple.

2008-10-17 Thread Wonko the Sane
I like you, Loren. You are an extremely intelligent individual (in spades).
You are a nice guy, even if your idea of a perfect meal is a face first dive
into an all-you-can-eat at Hickory Park (which does *not* offer a vegetarian
option).

That said, I think you are totally incorrect in what you wrote. Even more
disappointing to me, what you wrote in your post is well beneath your
dignity.

Phrases like elitist (corrected your spelling) Marxist prick isn't
something I ever thought I'd hear from you.

Obama isn't a Marxist. I am not sure you even understand what Marx said
(wrote). In this case, Marxism is just a scary word that one can throw
around.

Obama is a Progressive who wants to cut off the tax breaks of the extremely
wealthy (many of whom pay little or no taxes because they have a CPA on
staff). When he says spread the wealth I think he means that it is unfair
for folks like you and me to pay out the butt on tax day, when the really
rich folks can dodge their fair share.

Marx was a philosopher and an economist. The half-dozen university classes I
took studying him were all coded as PHI4xx.

Marx was about class struggle based on economic theory and philosophy, and I
don't remember hearing Obama say anything about overthrowing Wall Street
types.

Come on over to Jefferson this weekend. I will loan you the complete works
of Marx. Read it. It is right there on my bookshelf (along with many other
good books, including three translations of the Bible, Ironside's
commentaries, the complete works of Mark Twain, and the Hitchhiker's Guide
To The Galaxy four book trilogy -- and two shelves of my cookbooks). I even
think I have some of Hegel's works buried in there (Marx's mentor).

Wrong. The rich folks have little or NOTHING to do with my paycheck. In
fact, most rich folks don't even realize that there are folks like me doing
what I do. In fact, they normally insulate themselves from it.

Look, I have nothing against the rich. I'd like to be there myself, and
considered myself to be one of them my last few years in the USCG. I have a
couple of uncles who are self-made millionaires.

As for the poor paying no taxes -- don't get me started, Mrs. Wiggins! I am
representative payee for a dozen folks who not only pay no taxes, but get
free money back (earned income credit) from the government when they file
their taxes. And they pretty much live on SSI or SSDI checks.

I'd be all for a flat (or fair, or whatever you want to call it) tax based
on a fixed percentage of income. Not a sales tax, because that would be
regressive. [Folks like me spend most of the paycheck in living expenses,
and the wealthy spend a far smaller percentage to exist.] You pay x% of your
gross (before any deductions) back in taxes. Even better yet, have it
withheld from the paycheck and no one has to do any paperwork at tax time.

Of course, Quicken and 10,000 CPAs would be out of work.

Watch the vid, you can find it on youtube. Basically Joe asked about
the 250k thing and taxes, said he wanted to buy a business and grow it,
would get into that bracket, a few words were spoken on that regarding
those who work and those who don't, then Barry said, we need to spread

2008-10-17 Thread Rich Thomas
$250k is not extremely wealthy. I know lots of professional working
couples who have worked hard, got some good education, made some
sacrifices along the way, worked up the ladder, and now fall into that
category. They are not extremely wealthy and it is really not that
hard to achieve if you work at it. Your sort of category really rich
folks is .com millionaires, start-up cash-inners, and major corporate
execs who get lots and lots of stock options, or trust funders, or the
John Kerry-Heinzes, Johnny Edwards, Ted Kennedys, Warren Buffets, Bill
Gates, George Soros, Roger Waters, rappers, etc. If you wanted to do
that, only your ambition has stopped you from achieving it.

You have to make a difference between wealth and salary income.
Income is what working people bring home, wealth is what comes from
stocks and investments and savings and that sort of thing, and yes over
time the salaried people might become wealthy by saving and investing.
So I guess it is OK then to confiscate the results of their good work
and choices? So people who work for their money and make good money
should have it confiscated to pay for those who don't. That is just
thievery in another guise, might as well go to the rich guy's house with
pitchforks, guns, and torches, and take his flat screen and car and
whatever else you fancy -- that would be a fair share you are
entitled to, right? That is really sick thinking.

But the basic issue is Obammie stoking class warfare, pandering to those
who have not worked their way up the ladder, and keeping them in an
underclass that he can keep pandering to. His base. That is really sad
because it rewards failure to achieve potential that everyone has and
really says something about his view of his base --that they are so
stupid or lazy or inept that they need to be carried along by those who
achieved the potential. What a sad commentary.

You make your choices, you take your results, and don't whine about it
and expect to be carried along. If you want to become wealthy, then go
do it, the only one who is gonna stop you is you, and maybe Obammie.

Obama is a Progressive who wants to cut off the tax breaks of the
extremely wealthy (many of whom pay little or no taxes because they
have a CPA on staff). When he says spread the wealth I think he
means that it is unfair for folks like you and me to pay out the butt
on tax day, when the really rich folks can dodge their fair share.

The rich do NOT dodge their fair share. They pay almost ALL of the
taxes now. The lower income earners don't pay income taxes at all, how
do you give them a tax cut when they already don't pay any taxes?

You can delude yourself all you want and tell yourself whatever you want
to believe. The man has a history of repeatedly associating with
radical leftist, socialist, individuals and causes. I think his comment
about spreading the wealth around was a brief glimpse directly into
the core of his philosophy.

The rich folks are what make it possible for you and me to have jobs.
So I don't know why we have to punish them at every turn.

As with most things in the media, this is hogwash. Small business is
defined by the Gummit as up to 500 employees. aNY SMALL business that
has one employee has to make more than 250 k, or they will be out of
business very quickly. If the net is 10% a business grossing 250
will yield only 25k. How many of you want to sign up for a job where
you work 89 to 100 hours a week and take home 750 a week? Remember,
of that 25k, SS takes 15% off the top. Then you have to pay health
insurance, or hope you never get sick or injured.

By the way, there are a lot of businesses that net less than 10% of
gross. Also remember Bama is talking about gross income fom a
business over 250k gets taxed even more.

Further, apparently 'Joe the plumper' does not have a license and
doesn't like paying taxes
With the crowd chanting Joe! Joe! Joe! Palin also referred to
Samuel J. Wurzelbacher, the Joe the Plumber repeatedly cited by
McCain in Wednesday night's presidential debate as an example of a
hardworking American concerned that Obama will raise his taxes. It
was revealed Thursday that the Toledo area man, who had challenged
Obama last weekend, doesn't have a plumber's license and owes the
state back taxes.
http://news.bostonherald.com/news/politics/2008/view/2008_10_17_Sarah_Palin_rips_into_ACORN__defends_Joe_the_plumber/srvc=homeposition=5

There are US senators with tax liens. Joe never said he was a
licensed plumber, he said he wanted to buy a plumbing
business. Again, this is media BS and the only reason the dems and
media are trying to take poor Joe apart is because he had the
audacity of hope to want to own a plumbing business. His middle name
is Joe. Bet there are senators that go by their middle name. You
don't have to have a plumbers license to own a plumbing business. And
the best managers are generally NOT the technicians. It MIGHT also
come as a shock to some people that there are areas of the USA where
you don't have to have a freaking license to be a plumber. None of
the media morons have ever been to these parts of the country, so
they have no idea. Bama has no idea, that is for sure.

And why shouldn't someone earning 250K plus pay more taxes than others.

If it was taxable income, rather than gross, it might be a point. If
we had a fair tax, the more you make the more you pay. Anyone who
has a line whateverit is where the next line is the taxes you pay of
250k IS ALREADY paying taxes through the nose!

I'd sure as like to get there some day! I don't need the gummit
in the way making sure I never can.

I have no idea what the tax structure is in OZ, and I frankly don't care.

Re: [MBZ] OT - Joe The Plumber and tax dodger like certain Dem senators

2008-10-17 Thread OK Don
That net of 10% is AFTER the salaries have been paid, including that
of the owner -- the 10% is profit, not salary.

Back to Joe --

As with most things in the media, this is hogwash. Small business is
defined by the Gummit as up to 500 employees. aNY SMALL business that has
one employee has to make more than 250 k, or they will be out of business
very quickly. If the net is 10% a business grossing 250 will yield only
25k. How many of you want to sign up for a job where you work 89 to 100
hours a week and take home 750 a week? Remember, of that 25k, SS takes 15%
off the top. Then you have to pay health insurance, or hope you never get
 sick or injured.

By the way, there are a lot of businesses that net less than 10% of gross.
Also remember Bama is talking about gross income fom a business over 250k
 gets taxed even more.

Further, apparently 'Joe the plumper' does not have a license and doesn't
 like paying taxes
With the crowd chanting Joe! Joe! Joe! Palin also referred to Samuel J.
Wurzelbacher, the Joe the Plumber repeatedly cited by McCain in Wednesday
night's presidential debate as an example of a hardworking American
concerned that Obama will raise his taxes. It was revealed Thursday that the
Toledo area man, who had challenged Obama last weekend, doesn't have a
plumber's license and owes the state back taxes.
 http://news.bostonherald.com/news/politics/2008/view/2008_10_17_Sarah_Palin_rips_into_ACORN__defends_Joe_the_plumber/srvc=homeposition=5

There are US senators with tax liens. Joe never said he was a licensed
plumber, he said he wanted to buy a plumbing business. Again, this is media
BS and the only reason the dems and media are trying to take poor Joe apart
is because he had the audacity of hope to want to own a plumbing business.
His middle name is Joe. Bet there are senators that go by their middle
name. You don't have to have a plumbers license to own a plumbing business.
And the best managers are generally NOT the technicians. It MIGHT also come
as a shock to some people that there are areas of the USA where you don't
have to have a freaking license to be a plumber. None of the media morons
have ever been to these parts of the country, so they have no idea. Bama
has no idea, that is for sure.

And why shouldn't someone earning 250K plus pay more taxes than others.

If it was taxable income, rather than gross, it might be a point. If we had
a fair tax, the more you make the more you pay. Anyone who has a line
whateverit is where the next line is the taxes you pay of 250k IS ALREADY
 paying taxes through the nose!

I'd sure as like to get there some day! I don't need the gummit in the
way making sure I never can.

I have no idea what the tax structure is in OZ, and I frankly don't care.

Third, even if you're one of the rare business owners making enough money to
be affected by Obama's proposed tax increases, you still won't see a big
hike in your tax bill.* *

McCain's claim that Obama will increase taxes on 50% of small business
revenue - the line he used in the second presidential debate - is incorrect
because of how income is taxed.

If a business owner falls into the top bracket, that doesn't mean that all
of his or her income is taxed at the highest level.

For example: If a small-business owner makes $210,000 in taxable income, he
edges into the 33% bracket, one of the two top tax rates that Obama would
like to raise.

But he would pay the higher tax only on the amount that exceeds the cutoff -
in 2007, the two top tax rates applied to single filers with income of
$160,850 or more and joint filers with income of at least $195,850. As a
single filer, this business owner would see his federal taxes increase
$1,475 under Obama's plan, which calls for raising the 33% tax rate to 36%.
While Obama does favor raising the top two rates, the quote is not true
because not all the small business income of those in the top two rates is
taxed at the 33% and 35% rates, said Gerald Prante, a senior economist at
the nonpartisan Tax Foundation.

The bottom line: McCain's claim only works by using an overly broad
definition of what counts as a small business - and even with that
definition, fewer than 2% of business owners would be hit by Obama's
proposed rate increase. For those who are affected, the increase would be
levied only on a part of their earnings, not all of them.
