These are available in two styles. Direct replacement and ballast
bypass.

Direct replacement are just installed like a fluorescent tube.
Remove the one, install the other. Typically only work with
electronic ballasts and NOT with old-style magnetic ballasts.

Ballast bypass require rewiring the fixture, and some T8 fixtures
use tube sockets incompatible with the LED tubes. A fixture
designed for T12 is fine.

Personally, I have no problem with rewiring to eliminate the
ballast. And getting rid of the ballast is, in my reasoning, a
Good Thing (TM).

Just be sure you are getting what you expect.

And that’s why I bought/got gifted the ready made ones. I looked at doing the
conversions on my existing lights and it would have cost about the same with no
guarantee they would work.

I have them in a “C” pattern around both garage bays so there’s good general
illumination in the front and sides of the car when I’m working there. Task
lighting is still done with a drop light.

I made my kitchen light fixtures for these kinds of LED lights.
http://www.dx.com/p/gu10-5w-600lm-3000k-5-led-warm-white-light-bulb-silver-white-ac-85-265v-274579

I bought a bunch of the sockets and built fixtures then wired them up,
pretty cheap and the things put out VERY bright light.  I used a mix of
warmer and cooler colors.

I've been putting these: http://amzn.to/2DVf3Id into our basement to replace
24w 2ft dual tubes. They throw more light than the florescent even though
they're physically smaller. Plus they come on instantly.

The installation instructions suck but they're easy to figure out. I've got one
more fluorescent fixture to replace then I'll add I think 2 more for a dark
corner. I'm planning to put a couple in the garage too, LEDs are way better in

Yes, I was thinking general illumination instead of task lighting.

I found three 10 Watt LEDs and a driver at Marlin P. Jones and Associates
(http://www.mpja.com), 3000 lumens for $17.80, but that's only 169
lumens/dollar.

We put some of these:
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01MZ1XBGW/ref=sspa_dk_detail_5?psc=1_rd_i=B01MZ1XBGW_rd_wg=8XN6k_rd_r=R4WFAA4CHPAY5E2ZQZWS_rd_w=GEzpw=truck%20ledOn
the Pisten Bully and my ASV. We we worried the vibrations from a tracked
machine would break them. They've been great for a season on the Pisten Bully
and about 10 hours this year in the ASV.
I mounted an LED light bar on the back of the ASV yesterday and I've got a 4"
to go on also. The exhaust (rear engined machine) is offset to the passenger
side so the light bar is off to the driver's side with the 4" on the
passenger's.
That install has taken way more farting around than it should have. The
insulation on the wires for the light bar disintigrated on the outside of the
machine. It was very hard to snake a new wire into place. For the 4" I'm going
to cut the old light out and immediately heatshrink over the insulation so it
doesn't have a chance to go bad. All of this is while crouching on top of the
fuel tank (which is an approved standing surface) since the lights are at knee
height if you're standing. I'll try to take a picture today.

Interesting, I might order one of those for a video light. I've got a couple
halogen work lights but they're awful hard on bulbs and get super hot, plus
they use 3x the electricity.
When shooting video more light is better. The other day I was doing some super
close up stuff, I had 2x 100w LEDs about 1 foot away from the shot and wished I
had more but my halogen lights were out of bulbs. I've been using Harbor
Freight halogen bulbs which work as well as anything but are still not great.
