Re: [MBZ] S500 Ouchies

2015-07-20 Thread clay via Mercedes
The 300SE did a fine job transporting #1 boy from WA to ND. He had not taken
it more than 30 miles anywhere until this adventure. Standard MPG was in the
15 range, but he has a 28 gallon tank. His first highway fuel stop returned
17MPG. Pretty good clearing cobwebs. Second fuel stop he was up to 19.5MPG,
but there were no mountain passes, so Last fill up he was clocking 21MPG.
A 30% increase in miles is nice. I am not sure what the M119 returned, but
the smaller inline 6 has enough power to chirp wheels if needed.

Maybe UNC ran out of money after restoring Frampton's back pay.
(Fun read for the peanut gallery:

)

At NC State in 98 or so I took an intro to economics class with a bunch of
athletes, and they had a surprisingly difficult time of it - yet in the end
almost everyone got an A. However, I can confirm that work was done, as I
helped a number of my classmates with homework. (And thenceforth tried to
take math-y classes only with other engineering students...)

The official NCAA report. Yes, Mary W. I don't think she has any
interest in any association with them any more. The SIL was strung along
for a long time, lied to, and left swinging in the breeze too. She has
moved on too. All those big programs are just big business, and care
nothing about any of the employees, including the players who are
unmercifully exploited. She has so many stories of these young men coming
there to play football who were literate at maybe the 3rd grade level, no
concept whatsoever of "college." One of them was actually brain-damaged,
had sustained some sort of head injury at a young age, was out like a
light for 2-3 days, family just left him on the couch until he came to,
was never particularly coherent thereafter, but he was a big strong kid
and could play football, about all he knew how to do. She took him under
her wing, apparently a very sweet young man, and tried to help him but
there was not a lot to work with. They use them up and pass them along.

Unfortunately, Hillsdale; like many small colleges; is expensive: around
$70,000 per year which covers room, board, and everything.
Of course, once a young person has a degree, they probably have a broader
choice of high paying jobs than Ivy Leaguers since a large number of very
wealthy industrialists and business people support the school and make sure
grads have lots of choices.

The boy has said he will drive his car for the duration until we can find
another W140 rather than going up to a W210. He even agrees that an S320 would
be ideal due to mileage and fuel consumption. While I don’t think it will be
that much better than the M119 based on what I’ve heard from S320 owners, it’s
an improvement for sure.

There’s a nice one in St. Pete that just came up on CL today that I may go look
at tomorrow.

Also, by sticking with a W140 we can swap some things over to a “new” car
before getting rid of the coupe.

Re: [MBZ] S500 Ouchies

2015-07-17 Thread WILTON via Mercedes
I've read many of the reports, including Weinstein's; 'been following it for
a "few" years now. Like I said - damned upsetting.

Mary W., the tutor? They haven't done her right, yet. They need to
apologize for their treatment of her and reinstate her.

Did you read the report? My SIL had some mention in there, making a
fairly "emphatic" comment about something. Her friend Mary W wrote the
book, which caused some period of estrangement, but I think they have
kissed and made up over the whole thing once she got fully briefed on all
the shenanigans.

2015-07-17 Thread clay via Mercedes
There is also the lack of common sense or investment made by the scholars in
gobbling up loans instead of working their way to a degree. If you are busting
your hump to cover tuition and expenses, you tend to be a more pragmatic
consumer. Dear #1 boy and his parents found that out to the tune of $30k when
he bombed out of tech U. Too much fun and games, not enough study, and the
folks footing the bill.

He took off for the ND oil fields last week in the W140 so he could gather
enough cash to pay for school his own self. Two years of screwing around with
a service job and community college course work, one class at a time was not
working out and he had not really set his heart to either task. Now he will be
really invested in whichever degree he takes up.

SWMBA got her degrees with minimal loans, as we worked our butts off to pay for
the bulk of law school. We were able to keep heads above water enough to
purchase homes and other "lux" items that most of the wet behind the ears
college bunch no longer can. Cash for cars, financed the korean car new, and
#1 home is four year away from paid off. #2 home has a 15 year to go.

Re: [MBZ] S500 Ouchies

2015-07-17 Thread archer75--- via Mercedes
It sounds like Dan has a good relationship with his son. That's great and Dan
should be proud of himself and proud of his son for making that happen.

According to the police, Dans son hit another car. Since Dans son is in the
process of becoming a responsible adult, he should have a constant reminder for
a while of why defensive driving is very necessary.

By chance, having to drive the car that was damaged will probably be a very
good reminder until Dan finds replacement parts which are certainly available
somewhere, but might take a while.

Looking at the damaged car sitting in his drive every day is probably going to
be harder on Dan than on his son since Dan is an admitted perfectionist, but
this could be an extremely good learning experience for his son.

My suggestion would be for Dan to keep looking for the replacement parts on a
regular basis, even involving his son in the search if he doesn't have too much
homework, and let his son drive the damaged car in the meantime.

My wife and I used this approach on our children, and they grew up to be
responsible and successful adults.

Absolutely! What one gets out of an education is directly proportional to

#1 grndson called from Paris coupla days ago to say "thank you" for helping
him with finances, character guidance, study habits, etc., and that he's
glad to have gone to UNC-CH and Institute d'Etude Politique de Paris. 'Made
me feel mighty good to hear it from him without any prompting. 'Reminded,
him, of course, "Don't forget that others have been involved, too - Mom,
Dad, other grandparents - be sure to thank them, too."

'Reminds me: Just before he graduated from high school, he called me with
some exciting news - he had received a scholarship for $18K per year from
American U in DC. I was very happy for him, but I had to finally remind him
that it left "only" about $40K per year for the rest of us to pay. We were
pleased when he chose to attend UNC-CH (a state-supported U) at ~ $15K total
per year from us.

He and grndaughter have graduated summa cum laude (he at UNC-CH; she at
NCSU) with no student debt. She's starting PhD program at U of CO next
month with full scholarship, stipend, grants, etc.

'Mighty proud of bofum. ;<)

You buy another car and there will be mysteries. Most of

That depends, is it worth $60k (housing etc included) a year to have your
daughter date Harvard students?

The boy attends the University of South Florida's St. Petersburg campus.
Tuition for a semester runs between $2000-$3000 including books, depending on
his class load. So call it $7500/year.

Very affordable.

We have friends whose daughter graduated from Brown and is now in law school at
the University of Houston. They once told me that tuition at Brown cost them
around $45k/year.

I could never get my head around that.

A college degree imparts nothing if the owner of the degree parks his butt
on the degree and waits for "magic to come to him" because he has it..

It seems that may be the case with many who hold student loans for their
degree in "liberal underwater basket weaving", or "social victimology"
[snark full on].

Life is hard, life is harder if you don't get off your butt and apply what
talents you have, to use what tools you have.

A degree with no work ethic and no will to win is worth only the paper it
is written on barely.

I looked there as well. They had a few coupe hoods, but the price was
around $1000 not including shipping. Fenders were around $300. So that’s
$1300 right there without shipping. Then the cost of getting them
painted, which I’m thinking might be around $500.

Now we’re up to $1800 minimum, certainly more.

That’s for a car with 280k on it that I paid $3000 for three years ago.
The numbers just don’t work.

Oh - don’t forget the headlight, too. That’s maybe another $200.

Thanks for the suggestion, however. It was worth a shot. I look a this
as a blessing in disguise, as it will allow me to get the boy into
something a little more modern/safer and that has better gas mileage. He’s
driving about 75 miles a day for the next year to attend school, so I was
getting concerned about costs and the miles adding up on a car that’s
approaching 300k.

I looked there as well. They had a few coupe hoods, but the price was
around $1000 not including shipping. Fenders were around $300. So that’s
$1300 right there without shipping. Then the cost of getting them painted,
which I’m thinking might be around $500.

I look a this as
a blessing in disguise, as it will allow me to get the boy into something
a little more modern/safer and that has better gas mileage. He’s driving
about 75 miles a day for the next year to attend school, so I was getting
concerned about costs and the miles adding up on a car that’s approaching
300k.

Depends on the education.
On average a degree in anything is a big step up, a degree in something useful
is a huge step up especially if you've worked real hard and gotten yourself
some experience through an internship or summer job.

That will be the current approach, but I will replace the car. Back in my day I
could drive a beater but I don't want my kids driving them. It's a matter of
personal preference.

The rule here is that as long as you're in school full time the house provides
wheels and covers expenses. He's a damned good student and a responsible kid
for his age. I consider keeping him in a nice car a perk, and he knows it and
is very, very appreciative. Most of his non-college buddies drive beaters they
are constantly patching together to keep on the road. I want him to understand
the value of an education and the ability to have and afford nice things as a
result. Seeing that contrast on a daily basis makes a very powerful impression
- it has on him, for sure.

As the son of a first generation immigrant, I have worked hard to get where I
am. I want my kids to have nice things and be successful, and if I can
contribute to that while making sure they have a good set of values and
appreciate what it takes to get where we are, I'm happy to do so.

Agreed. Newer = better for sure. Thanks for pointing out the break between 97

The boy is busy catching up on school work and I have an HOA meeting in about
30 minutes, but I’ll have a chat with him later tonight and see what he thinks.
He certainly won’t look a gift horse in the mouth no matter what, but I would

Otherwise I would put him in a Ford Focus until he’s out of college….

I was able to extract the headlight assembly and straighten out the little
portion of the radiator support that is forward of the oval opening in the
support back to pretty much original position. At this point I’ll source a
replacement headlight to get him mobile and we’ll go from there.

If things had gone back another inch we would have lost AC and one or both of
the ignition coils. The boy is living right…

LKQ was the first call I made this morning. If they don’t have it, tough
beans, they won’t help you get it (like they do for professional body shops.)

They don’t have it.

The coupe is different than the sedan in front, or so I’m finding out. With
that in mind, I would say this car’s fate has probably been decided. Very,
very little in the way of coupe parts in circulation right now, so I’m finding.

Re: [MBZ] S500 Ouchies

2015-07-16 Thread Curly McLain via Mercedes

So the po lice/insco will say it is his fault for being young and male. Nice!

Youngest son calls this morning. Not usually a good thing at this hour.

Had a Jeep Cherokee cut in front of him, he hit the brakes but still
ended up hitting them with the front left corner of the car. Jeep
bumper smashed headlight, crumpled hood and fender, no other damage
and car is definitely drivable. That's why we drive these cars,
guys.

Boy is perfectly fine, but understandably bummed/pissed.

Poop.

So now I am faced with the following for a $3,000.00 car with a salvage title:

1.) Find a hood, fender and headlight. Headlight is easy, not sure
about hood and fender. Gotta call a local recycler to see if they
can find anything and how much it would be.

2.) Beat the panels out, replace the headlight and turn indicator
and let him drive it like that.

3.) Retire the car and find something else.

So, anyone know of a decent W140 or maybe an E class, something of
that sort? How's about a W140 that someone is parting out?

#2 will probably take place in the interim anyway, just so he has wheels.

I've never sourced body parts before, but I'm thinking that
something as big as a hood is going to be expensive if it's got to
be shipped.

Dang it.

Re: [MBZ] S500 Ouchies

2015-07-16 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
I live in Tampa, but it's still a haul, roughly 1300 miles according to the
Google. Agree with the other points. I'm not interested in a road trip unless
it's for a replacement, and a darned good one at that.

Shipping would be costly and I am not really setup to do large shipping
anymore. Is this the coupe you are talking about? If so I don't have the parts
I don't think. I have sedan parts.

Google says Miami to Tulsa is 1445 miles so round trip is pretty close
to 3000 miles.

At 20 mpg, that is about 150 gallons of fuel.
I don't know about you, but I am getting to the stage in my life where I
have no plans to drive a thousand miles a day so it would take some days.

Even with 2 or 3 drivers it would take a lot of time.

Please do. You've done well by me once, maybe you can make it two times...

Thank you!

To be honest, I don't think it's going to make a lot of sense to put any money
into this car at this point. It pains me to say that, but the economics
probably bear out just getting another car. Ideally I would like to get him in
something a little more economical like a six cylinder since he's commuting to
school this coming year. That's why I mentioned an E class.

Youngest son calls this morning. Not usually a good thing at this hour.

Had a Jeep Cherokee cut in front of him, he hit the brakes but still ended
up hitting them with the front left corner of the car. Jeep bumper smashed
headlight, crumpled hood and fender, no other damage and car is definitely
drivable. That's why we drive these cars, guys.

Boy is perfectly fine, but understandably bummed/pissed.

Poop.

So now I am faced with the following for a $3,000.00 car with a salvage
title:

1.) Find a hood, fender and headlight. Headlight is easy, not sure about
hood and fender. Gotta call a local recycler to see if they can find
anything and how much it would be.

2.) Beat the panels out, replace the headlight and turn indicator and let
him drive it like that.

3.) Retire the car and find something else.

So, anyone know of a decent W140 or maybe an E class, something of that
sort? How's about a W140 that someone is parting out?

#2 will probably take place in the interim anyway, just so he has wheels.
