Re: [MBZ] S500 Ouchies
The 300SE did a fine job transporting #1 boy from WA to ND. He had not taken it more than 30 miles anywhere until this adventure. Standard MPG was in the 15 range, but he has a 28 gallon tank. His first highway fuel stop returned 17MPG. Pretty good clearing cobwebs. Second fuel stop he was up to 19.5MPG, but there were no mountain passes, so Last fill up he was clocking 21MPG. A 30% increase in miles is nice. I am not sure what the M119 returned, but the smaller inline 6 has enough power to chirp wheels if needed. clay On Jul 17, 2015, at 6:00 PM, Dan Penoff via Mercedes wrote: > The boy has said he will drive his car for the duration until we can find > another W140 rather than going up to a W210. The boy has said he will drive his car for the duration until we can find another W140 rather than going up to a W210. He even agrees that an S320 would be ideal due to mileage and fuel consumption. There is also the lack of common sense or investment made by the scholars in gobbling up loans instead of working their way to a degree. If you are busting your hump to cover tuition and expenses, you tend to be a more pragmatic consumer. Dear #1 boy and his parents found that out to the tune of $30k when he bombed out of tech U. Too much fun and games, not enough study, and the folks footing the bill. He took off for the ND oil fields last week in the W140 so he could gather enough cash to pay for school his own self. Two years of screwing around with a service job and community college course work, one class at a time was not working out and he had not really set his heart to either task. Now he will be really invested in whichever degree he takes up. SWMBA got her degrees with minimal loans, as we worked our butts off to pay for the bulk of law school. We were able to keep heads above water enough to purchase homes and other "lux" items that most of the wet behind the ears college bunch no longer can. Re: [MBZ] S500 Ouchies
It sounds like Dan has a good relationship with his son. That's great and Dan should be proud of himself and proud of his son for making that happen. According to the police, Dans son hit another car. Since Dans son is in the process of becoming a responsible adult, he should have a constant reminder for a while of why defensive driving is very necessary. By chance, having to drive the car that was damaged will probably be a very good reminder until Dan finds replacement parts which are certainly available somewhere, but might take a while. Looking at the damaged car sitting in his drive every day is probably going to be harder on Dan than on his son since Dan is an admitted perfectionist, but this could be an extremely good learning experience for his son. My suggestion would be for Dan to keep looking for the replacement parts on a regular basis, even involving his son in the search if he doesn't have too much homework, and let his son drive the damaged car in the meantime. My wife and I used this approach on our children, and they grew up to be responsible and successful adults. I've known this family very well since our kids were in kindergarten. Mom and Dad were so focused on the academic achievements of daughter that nothing the son did could eclipse big sister. Therefore, I'm convinced he got wise after beating his head against the wall and getting nothing for it that he tossed in the towel and just said "Screw it." Too bad, as he's a smart kid. A college degree imparts nothing if the owner of the degree parks his butt on the degree and waits for "magic to come to him" because he has it.. It seems that may be the case with many who hold student loans for their degree in "liberal underwater basket weaving", or "social victimology" [snark full on]. Life is hard, life is harder if you don't get off your butt and apply what talents you have, to use what tools you have. A degree with no work ethic and no will to win is worth only the paper it is written on barely. On Fri, Jul 17, 2015 at 7:53 AM, Kaleb C. Eh. Just bash it back into approximately the right shape and replace the light. College kid right? He drives what rolls, if he doesn't like it he can get a job and buy his own car... Hear, hear! College seems like a big racket these days to me. I know lots of folks paying off student loans all their life that don't really make that much money. At this point I’ll source a replacement headlight to get him mobile and we’ll go from there. If things had gone back another inch we would have lost AC and one or both of the ignition coils. LKQ was the first call I made this morning. If they don’t have it, tough beans, they won’t help you get it (like they do for professional body shops.) They don’t have it. The coupe is different than the sedan in front, or so I’m finding out. With that in mind, I would say this car’s fate has probably been decided. Very, very little in the way of coupe parts in circulation right now, so I’m finding. Dan > On Jul 16, 2015, at 2:56 PM, Andrew Strasfogel wrote: > > What about the nearest junk yards? Re: [MBZ] S500 Ouchies
So the po lice/insco will say it is his fault for being young and male. Nice! Youngest son calls this morning. Not usually a good thing at this hour. Had a Jeep Cherokee cut in front of him, he hit the brakes but still ended up hitting them with the front left corner of the car. Jeep bumper smashed headlight, crumpled hood and fender, no other damage and car is definitely drivable. That's why we drive these cars, guys. Boy is perfectly fine, but understandably bummed/pissed. Poop. So now I am faced with the following for a $3,000.00 car with a salvage title: 1.) Find a hood, fender and headlight. Headlight is easy, not sure about hood and fender. Gotta call a local recycler to see if they can find anything and how much it would be. 2.) Beat the panels out, replace the headlight and turn indicator and let him drive it like that. 3.) Retire the car and find something else. So, anyone know of a decent W140 or maybe an E class, something of that sort? How's about a W140 that someone is parting out? #2 will probably take place in the interim anyway, just so he has wheels. I've never sourced body parts before, but I'm thinking that something as big as a hood is going to be expensive if it's got to be shipped. Dang it. I live in Tampa, but it's still a haul, roughly 1300 miles according to the Google. Agree with the other points. I'm not interested in a road trip unless it's for a replacement, and a darned good one at that. Shipping would be costly and I am not really setup to do large shipping anymore. Is this the coupe you are talking about? If so I don't have the parts I don't think. I have sedan parts. Google says Miami to Tulsa is 1445 miles so round trip is pretty close to 3000 miles. At 20 mpg, that is about 150 gallons of fuel. I don't know about you, but I am getting to the stage in my life where I have no plans to drive a thousand miles a day so it would take some days. Even with 2 or 3 drivers it would take a lot of time. RB On 16/07/2015 10:47 AM, Dan Penoff via Mercedes wrote: This is where the economics as well as logistics kick in. Re: [MBZ] S500 Ouchies
Please do. You've done well by me once, maybe you can make it two times... Thank you! To be honest, I don't think it's going to make a lot of sense to put any money into this car at this point. It pains me to say that, but the economics probably bear out just getting another car. Ideally I would like to get him in something a little more economical like a six cylinder since he's commuting to school this coming year. That's why I mentioned an E class.
