No. I sold it way way way way too cheap a couple of years ago. Today the same
car would be worth at least 3k.

Re: [MBZ] Should I buy a ML350?

2017-08-17 Thread Mitch Haley via Mercedes

Here's my parts list so far:
Fender, Green Black Metallic U189 $200 plus a four hour round trip drive.
Headlamp, left, halogen $40 plus shipping
Condenser, $45 and it's only 25 miles away
Radiator, Hella/Behr, $150 small or $175 large from RockAuto.
Fog lamp, Hella, $50 RockAuto.

I've been seeing MLs for $1200-2500, but they all look like crap compared to
the unwrecked part of this 350, and most of them are 1998s and 1999s.
The only $2500 350 I've seen up here was a bit of a rust bucket.

OK. I threw a $675 bid ($945 with fees) on it before I came home, I'll just sit

For the price of a radiator, headlight and demo saw, it'd make a heck of a

So you wouldn't pay a grand for it and start looking for parts?

Oooh, I didn't notice that. I did notice the big yellow blinking exclamation
point (!) in the speedo, like my 4matic wagon does when I spin the back tires,
but this ML does it when parked. That'll teach me to take the DAS with me next

My 2002 ML320 had an ugly repaint on the front foot or so of the LF fender. I
found a correct (silver) color one at a local wrecker within a week ($150) and
my son and I had it R'd without much trouble.

The ABS stuff is right behind that headlamp. Expect some electronics gremlins
to pop up if there's some damage there.

At the moment, less than 1k.
But that can easily be 2k plus a fair bit of labor by the time I get it
roadworthy.

I assumed it would be midnight blue like my wagon, but it's really green black
metallic, U189. That'll be fun to find a pre-painted fender for, or $500+ to
paint a fender. I'm surprised they call it Green Black, it doesn't look at all
like a Opal Green W140, which is black-green to my eyes. I guess you call

radiator, left fan in front of condenser, and left fender, that I know of.
Undercarriage looks nice, a spot of rust on the body behind left rear door,
probably some kid scratched the paint getting in the back 6 years ago and they
let it go rusty. Clean title, shifts quickly and quietly into first and

Heated seats, no navigation, Bose audio, looks like a changer in the back but I

It's still sitting here, but it's no snowmobile.
I wouldn't mind a ML in the same color for towing and bad weather.
Sounds like I want something from this century and not a 1998-1999.
I had thought they were mechanically identical to my S210 4matic, but it turns
out the ML has a dual range transfer case that's less reliable than the C and E
class cars.

Last one I looked at had a transfer case warning light "it's just the shift
solenoid, an easy and cheap fix", a huge exhaust or manifold leak on the right
bank, and a very soft feeling torque converter. The dark green paint had a lot
of blue in it, would not make a matching set with my W140. Front carpet missing,
but it's got some good rubber mats in it. Body was rock solid underneath if
anybody wants a cheap project truck.
http://grandrapids.craigslist.org/cto/5792786880.html

Speaking of cheap, before I found the green one in Columbus I was thinking of
buying this burgundy ML55 in Okemos, might still take a look at it this weekend:

Yup.

I thought Kleb or someone else said all MLs were to be avoided? Of course, if
the price is right who cares, right?

What happened to your S420?

My former SWMBO's Smart Car had heated seats with separate controls, which

Maybe $1500-$2000 at best.

I wouldn’t put any money into fixing the rear other that checking in with a
dent repair place I know to see if they could pull it out any more than it
currently is. I talked to the owner this morning and she said the trunk lid
sits low and the panel behind the license plate is caved in somewhat, but the
trunk latches and seals.

If I sold it I would be doing it as a daily driver/beater just to recoup my
costs.

The price and mileage would make it attractive in this market.

Heated seats are a nice option here, as believe it or not, between November and
March it can get cold, easily into the 40s at night. Having bun warmers makes
it nice to get warmed up quickly and not have to worry about turning on the
heat.

I can get it for $1000 or less. I could part it for a lot of nice stuff for my

$39 to fly to Fort Lauderdale and 5-6 hours to drive home.

I would be interested primarily in interior stuff, like the heated seats. Then
again, they’re not that big of a deal around here. KaIeb - ever swapped heated
seats in a W126?

I would definitely swap out all the interior burl for my Zebrano, and probably
just pick over the interior for the best bits to spiff up the 350SDL, since
it’s the same interior and color.

If I could keep it intact with swapping out stuff from my car I could still end
up selling it and cover my costs, giving me whatever I get off of it
essentially for free.

Might be a fun car to drive - I’ve never driven a 560 anything.

Re: [MBZ] Should I Buy This Car?

2016-05-19 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
Just got off the phone with the owner.

Insco gave them $6000 for the repairs and left it up to them as to whether or
not they want to repair it. No writeoff, so the title is intact. This is good
and bad - if it was totaled I could get it for far less due to the salvage
title. However, with a good title it’s worth far more as a flip.

Everything works on the car, it’s definitely drivable, only issue (besides the
damage) is the driver’s side rear running light doesn’t work. Interior is in
good condition, no major repairs during their ownership (2 years) except an EHA
replacement ($$$!) and a “sliding jaw” replacement on a rear window.

I can get it for $800. I’m just torn as to whether I should fix the taillights
and yank on the sheetmetal and flip it, or use it for parts (mostly interior)
to pretty up my 350SDL. I wonder how hard it would be to swap over the heated
seats. Rears would probably be pretty straightforward, but not sure about the
fronts. If I could swap a lot of the stuff between cars I would still have an
intact car to flip when done.

Ideas?

Hmmm….

What you say is not true. I don't know if it ever was, but it definitely
is not now.

In fact, the opposite is true. The latest revision of the Interstate
Truck Driver's Guide to Hours of Service, was published by the Federal
Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) in February 2013 to help
explain their regulations. On page two, it discusses Personal Use of a
Commercial Motor Vehicle saying,

It is possible that occasionally you may not use a truck
in commerce at all. You may be moving your personal
belongings to a new house or, as a hobby, you may be taking
your horses to a horse show. As long as the activity is not
in support of a business, the Federal hours-of-service
regulations do not apply to you.

If you are not operating your truck in commerce, you are
not subject to the hours-of-service regulations.

The hours-of-service regulations do not apply to anyone using a personal
vehicle, even if he has a CDL. Reading 49 CFR Part 395 would be very
helpful in correcting your mistaken ideas.

I don't think any state will let you do that any more. the CDL is
based on the mfg tag. So a truck built before the CDL came in that
were rated 26,500 requires a CDL.

I think the CDL law required the states to register at the GVW
rating. At least I have not seen any ton rating license stickers
since the CDL came in. I had Chauffeurs license rated for straight
trucks and busses before the CDL law came in. I was going to get a
CDL, but then i looked at the rules and then decided NO!

Should use 11R x 22.5 tires, which are common to all semi tractors and in
good supply,, even as retreads for the drive tires ... about $200 each...
Steer tires should always be virgin rubber, no recap.. so another $350 each
for two of those.

What engine does it use?

Would make a killer rollback car haul truck. I've seen several rollback
beds on Craigslist here for decent price.. Moving cars with a rollback is
almost painless, I've moved cars that didn't even have wheels with a
rollback.. it didn't even blink..

Buy it you need it... really... I'll join the attaboy chorus when

Re: [MBZ] Should I buy this?

2015-06-27 Thread Curly McLain via Mercedes

Kleb,

Buy it.

I can probably scrounge up 6 tires for you. I have good tires on
trailers. I'd just have to find some carcasses to put on storage
trailers, or scrap a trailer.

If the engine is truly shot, why not buy a newer bigger MB engine out
of a freightshaker. I doubt anyone wears out the MB engines. THe
V-8 OM??? that DB put in a white in the 70s had a million or 1.5
million miles on it and was still in perfect shape. That engine may
still be laying around. I can ask the soninlaw if they still have
it. They scrapped the white but kept the engine.

If you think of the durability of an OM617 vs the durability of an OM
603 or OM606, then a MB truck engine form the 80s or 90s should be
quite a but more durable than the 70-something V8 truck Diesel.

With more power, you could gear it so it will run highways speeds
without working hard. It could make quite a rollback.

1113 had the lowest HP engine, somehow related to the 13. the 1116
and 1316 had more HP. A 1316 may require a CDL. A truck with a GVW
rated 26,000 lb or less do not require a CDL. 26,001 up require a
CDL. Best to stay away from CDL.

I am guessing this one is under 26,000 GVW

Good luck

Should use 11R x 22.5 tires, which are common to all semi tractors and in
good supply,, even as retreads for the drive tires ... about $200 each...
Steer tires should always be virgin rubber, no recap.. so another $350 each
for two of those.

What engine does it use?

Would make a killer rollback car haul truck. I've seen several rollback
beds on Craigslist here for decent price.. Moving cars with a rollback is
almost painless, I've moved cars that didn't even have wheels with a
rollback.. it didn't even blink..

Buy it you need it... really... I'll join the attaboy chorus when
you do..

What about the cost differential in the two fuels? Where is that delta
headed?

It's a common dilemma for those in the market for a new car: should you
choose a petrol or diesel engine? It was a question put to Telegraph
Motoring correspondents Honest John and Andrew English at this week's
Telegraph Festival of Motoring, the UK's first digital motor show.
In a video debate on the Festival of Motoring website, Honest John
explains one of the frequently overlooked virtues of petrol engines when
they are fitted with a turbocharger. The good thing about turbo petrol
engines is they heat up very quickly, and you notice it very quickly in the
 winter.
At the same time [the engine is] becoming efficient more quickly, so if
you do short runs, a turbo petrol makes a lot more sense than a diesel
 does.
However, Honest John agrees with conventional wisdom that a new diesel car
makes more sense for drivers covering bigger distances, adding that you
shouldn't have trouble with your diesel particulate filters that you will
have if you drive diesels very short distances.
Adding fuel to the fire, Andrew English agrees with Honest John up to a
point: I think it gets complicated because there's some weasel economics
that goes into these decisions, says English. Honest is absolutely right
in terms of the broadness of the approach, but a lot of people don't buy
 their cars, they run them.

English adds: If you take the extra purchase price out of a diesel car,
because they cost a bit more - and will cost considerably more as
legislation comes in - if you're just running the thing, i.e. in your
private miles, then yeah, you want the extra economy of the diesel.
But for a lot of people, if they're buying the diesel, they've really got
to do some hard thinking about how many miles they do. And it's worth
keeping a note book on these things, because the fact is most people can't
make a diesel pay. You've got to drive these things a lot. Not quite to the
moon and back, but you're talking 20,000 or 30,000 miles a year to recover
the extra purchase costs of some of the diesels - and that's not going to
go anywhere else but up in the coming years.
