While some countries have transferred from left to right, the only case
recorded of a transfer from right to left is in Okinawa on 30 July 1978.

found this tidbit on:
http://users.pandora.be/worldstandards/driving%20on%20the%20left.htm

I lived in Japan for seven years while in the Navy, and often found myself
walking to the left side of the car! When I returned to the US, I then
began to absentmindedly walk to the right side of the car.

I had my first encounter with the 123 MB in Japan, a buddy bought a 76 280E
with a 4-speed and left hand steering. I was prout of myself to be able to
switch from my rhd car to his MB without suffering a loss of functionality.

India drives on the left b/c it was a British colony for 200 years. I think
the pattern (excluding Japan) is that if it was under British control when
driving began, the country or territory drives on the left. I can't recall
any non-British-occupied country (besides Japan) that drives on the left.

Even though MOST of the world drives on the left!

Who are most? Most of the places I can think of are islands:
Nippon, United Kingdoms, Australia, Bermuda... Don't the African and
Eurasian mainlands all drive on the right? Or does India drive on the
 left?

India on the left. China I think, all former Bristish colonies on the
left. That would inlcude Kenya, Ghana, Zimbabwe and South Africa.
(?)Hmmm. not sure on SA.

Most of the Caribbean are too, n'est-ce pas?

Those South Africans drive on the left like all sensible people. There are
quite a few SA 123's over here in Oz, I know I owned one for a couple of
years. Mercedes got them build from knock down kits, probably to get around
the trade embargos.

Not just the trade embargoes. SA imposed a 110% duty on foreign cars.
Whe n I worked for Toyota, they also produced cars there from knockdown
kits.
