Can these thing sease in the tranny off take? Loosening the speedometer cable bolt doesn't cut it. You must REMOVE the bolt before the cable on my cars can be removed. There's a groove that prevents the cable coming out with the bolt in place. You did pull the bolt all the way out, right? The cable will not come out with the bolt in place. I had a Dodge Dart in Colorado whose speedometer stopped working when I drove through deep snow to get to work. It turned out the speedometer cable was sheared off at the transmission. Craig

Got in car this morn and going down road noticed nothing happened. No speed, no trip odometer (tried zeroing in) movement, no main mileage odometer movement. This was right after starting the vehicle. We had a wicked yankee clipper come through yesterday so I figured maybe things froze up. Got the cabin nice and toasty and ran the piss out of the car on the express way for about 15 miles. No go. Symptoms seem to indicate speedo cable. Do they only last 50k miles. Last time I did the cable I had the odometer sent off to have serviced. Any thoughts please. Tom. I think you can expect the speedo cable to last about 100,000 miles if it is properly installed with no kinks, etc. Several of us have experienced failure of the first drive gear, just inside the speedometer head. This is usually preceded by a squalling noise, not unlike a failing drive cable. This gear is part of the calibration of the speedo with the axle ratio on my 79, so must be replaced with the same exact gear to retain an accurate speedometer. I got mine out of a wreck at Upull . Symptoms seem to indicate speedo cable. Do they only last 50k miles. Last time I did the cable I had the odometer sent off to have serviced. Any thoughts please. Cable _could_ have snapped, but shouldn't have. If it were routed wrong the life could have been dramatically shortened. If the head froze up it could have broken the cable too. First you're going to have to unhook the cable to see if it's still spinning, then you've got to make sure the head is free. With all three instruments out, it's unlikely to be within the head itself, other than a freeze-up of the main sleeve bearing. -- Jim

My experience is that a cable will make noise or cause the speedometer to jump a _lot_ before it quits altgether. So I'd check both end and make sure it didn't just become disconnected. Philip, do the easy stuff first!
