In the 70s, the DM Register's Picture Magazine did a story with pictures 
of Mr. Mercedes, Phil Mangan.   Phil started out as an apprentice in the 
factory.  When I first met him he was about 65 and was the head mechanic 
at the local stealer.  He was a terrific mechanic, and a great guy.  
Later, all the mechanics at the stealer quit at the same time.  3 of 
them, 2 volvo guys and Phil opened up shop at an old filling station on 
East University.  (Cheaper side of the city)  The partnership did not 
last, and the biz fell apart after a couple years.  Phil and his SonIL 
opened up a shop downtown, where he continued to work on MBs.  At the 
time of the article, he was acknowledged as the Best MB mechanic in the 
state, if not the region.  Phil worked every day, well into his 80s.  He 
is gone now, but in my eyes, he is still Mr. Mercedes.


While he was still at the stealer, I could take a vacuum pump to his 
house, and he would rebuild it in the evenings or weekends.  Lotsa other 
people took their cars to Phil's house for work.


Right now, Pierre is about as close as anyone I know to be Mr. Mercedes.

Of our list, i'd nominate Jaime, as he does nice work, rescuing old MBs 
in his time off.


Diimitri and Dan get honorable mention for outstanding work in various 
areas.
