Having my 190D's injectors cleaned and calibrated made a big difference in cold start performance. Now its got a persistent small diesel leak I have yet to track down. I think its loosing some of its prime, it starts but needs significant input from the go-pedal to stay running at first. -Curt From: Peter Frederick via Mercedes mercedes@okiebenz.com To: Mercedes Discussion List mercedes@okiebenz.com Sent: Monday, March 9, 2015 12:18 AM Subject: Re: [MBZ] Update XL: Shirley in a car wreck Over the last couple years my 300D has become reluctant to start at below zero temps. one or two cylinders fire right up, and if the rest did like my old diesel did, it would take right off. These days I have to keep cranking while it sputters and smokes, eventually starting and running poorly, but this was a -8, Engine now has at least 400,000 miles on it, and I suspect I need to replace the pressure valve holder seals and probably need to check the injectors, it always runs rather rough at idle and the nozzles have at least 120,000 miles on them, possibly considerably more. I think it would benefit from a new timing chain, too. But it started and ran well at -8 with no block heater. Good point. I had forgotten all about the Chrysler connection. Anyway, my 1983 300TD with 342,000 on the clock (replacement drive train with approx. 260K miles) performed like a CHAMP (albeit a COLD champ) to and from Ohio this weekend. Fit and finish sucks, reliability of critical systems such as the suspension is poor and very expensive to repair, even as a DIY thing, cabin electronics are wonky, and telematics suck (ask Jaime about that.) You over trimmed again Peter, took me awhile to realize this was for me. Mine is smooth as silk once it runs for 15 seconds, lumpy to get there. I'm getting a little smell of diesel now with no easily visible source. Once the weather warms up some I'll wipe around with a paper towel, ought to be able to find it. Its not return lines or anything obvious. -Curt From: Peter Frederick psf...@earthlink.net To: Curt Raymond curtlud...@yahoo.com; Mercedes Discussion List mercedes@okiebenz.com Sent: Monday, March 9, 2015 7:21 PM Subject: Re: [MBZ] Update XL: Shirley in a car wreck Look at the fuel lines around the pre-heater and pre-heater thermostat. These are all on the suction side, and if they leak will leak air in instead of fuel out. O-rings in the pre-heater thermostat and the one on the lift pump where the suction line attaches are also a source of invisible leakage that allows air in, with rough idle, hard starts, and general vibration while running. I need to chase all this down on the 300D too -- I replaced the lines on the small in-line filter because they were rock hard, and that helped, but have not had a chance to get to the rest of them. Will also replace the o-rings, my brother just did it on his 300SDL. Leaks in the suction side of the fuel system result in a hard miss in time with engine rotation that cannot be isolated to any cylinder by loosening the cap nuts on the injection lines. All the nozzles are missing some time or other due to air in the fuel and low fill pressure in the injection pump supply chamber. Takes a while to purge all the air out once you get the leaks fixed. Mine runs as smooth as silk so long as the air temp is above 50, shakes like crazy below that most of the time, which makes me think I have an air leak. I also thought of an '84 or '85 300SD. I would be open to a W140, given Dan's positive comments on the series (and, hopefully, his advice on fixing one). I'm not sure I would want a W210, since we will be moving to the Rust Belt in northern Indiana. Also, since we will be where it gets COLD, I'm thinking our next car should run on gasoline, unless a diesel can be started when it's cold. One advantage, though, is that Elkhart is close to water, so it won't get quite as bitterly cold as, say, Montana or Minnesota. With the number of things we need to do before the end of the month when we need to be out of our home, I'm thinking of delaying the acquisition of another Mercedes until after we move. And I'm still in the process of getting our truck repaired (which is why Shirley was coming down to Albuquerque to pick me up). I need to go down to Albuquerque (~ 2 hours one way) early this week to retrieve our personal items from our E320 and then go talk with people about trailers and tires for them. That sort of thing is pretty scary, glad she has emerged mostly functional. A testament I guess to a car that is 20 years old, and the engineering in it. Not sure I would want to be in some other 20 yr old vehicle and do that, though my truck is a 96 and I drive that. Hope I never have the chance to test its integrity in that fashion. Maybe Kleb can give you a coupla $100 for the hulk, use the bits to fix up his other treasures. --R On 3/8/15 5:32 PM, Craig via Mercedes wrote: On Sun, 8 Mar 2015 11:15:57 -0500 Kaleb C. I guess I won't be needing the passenger side mirror from you anymore. :-) I also won't have to change the transmission fluid, fix the emergency blinker, or buy new tires for it. We had a flat tire while we were in Carlsbad and I almost bought a new set for the car since the Nokian WRG2 tires are down to the wear bars -- having to wait a day for the tire store to get them from Albuquerque or El Paso stopped that, thankfully. Once he got a decent battery in it, my son's 190D started reliably in Houghton, MI - on the UP - for two years. I'm sure it got plenty cold there. I never had an issue with any of the OM60x engines at or a little below 0F here. Mobil 1 is your friend (at the risk of starting another oil thread). I agree that given that you are moving soon, having one less car to move is a plus. So glad to hear that Shirley is going to be OK - rolling a car is very scary! Over the last couple years my 300D has become reluctant to start at below zero temps. one or two cylinders fire right up, and if the rest did like my old diesel did, it would take right off. I remain convinced that the time SWMBA was forced off the freeway in the SL, had she been in the X5 it would have rolled. The 107 is low, wide, and heavy, and did not flip. There was a lot of crap wedged between the tires and the rims, and a water jug in the trunk was split. Lot of sideways forces at play there, she did a 360 before coming to a stop. Re: [MBZ] Update XL: Shirley in a car wreck
Indeed, our prayers are with you. Thankful she's OK. Wilt - Original Message - From: Craig McCluskey via Mercedes mercedes@okiebenz.com To: undisclosed-recipients: Sent: Friday, March 06, 2015 6:10 PM Subject: [MBZ] Update XL: Shirley in a car wreck I had hoped to send out an Update email describing all that has been going on with us and what we think the Lord will have us do to get to Indiana, but I have waiting at a truck service center here in Albuquerque for Shirley to come down from Los Alamos to pick me up and just got a call that she was involved in a roll-over accident on the Coors offramp from I-40. I do know that Shirley is OK; I talked with her on our cell phone. An Albuquerque Police Detective came on the phone and said he would send a squad car over to pick me up. I called Charlie Bell of our church and he is initiating some help from the church people. Your prayers are greatly coveted.
