The toyota guys I know who are stuck with a warm adjustment are kicking
themselves for not writing down the cold specs any time I point out that I
can do the 300D's valves cold.

Having done valves cold and hot, I prefer cold myself.

This will be my first valve job, and I'm glad that you
mentioned that the engine needs to be cold. I surely
didn't know about this requirement. Since I'm planning
to do this myself, that shouldn't be a problem.
I wonder, though, how the dealership/Indie gets around
this issue. A car will be instantly out of specs the
next morning when the engine cools down and all the
metals contract.

There are specs in some MB manuals for a hot (read warm) adjustment.
Cold is more accurate. Give an extra .0005-.001" as Marshall mentioned

Twice a week will keep you well enough informed but 15,000mi is the
recommendation. in .004" out .014" no more than 5 degrees stretch.
The engine has a tensioner that mysteriously keeps things right all by
itself.
If you buy Amsoil from me and pour it in your engine you may never
even have to look in there again, I personally like to peek now and
then.

Valves need to be checked every 15kmi (I checked them every fall, before
really cold weather). They need to be checked COLD (engine not run for
6-8 hours) and for your engine, intake valve clearance is 0.1 mm (0.15
if temps could drop below zero F) and exhaust valves should have 0.35 mm
clearance. When checking the valves, chain stretch needs to be measured.
If chain stretch exceeds about 5-6 degrees, the chain needs to be
replaced to correct valve and injection pump timing (it's unlikely to
snap before stretch reaches 8-10 degrees).
