The fill line is the points of the triangles on the side of the plastic
spindle inside the reservoir.

Plastic? I ain't got no stinkin' plastic in MY PS reservoir. And the
triangle now floats to the top of wherever the spring is.

So how much air space does that leave?

I'm going from the MB CD here (job 46-715)

For the VT 49 and ZL 49 pumps, the reservoir is properly filled when the
cold (20C) oil level is 6-8mm below the embossed or cast mark inside the
pump.

For the VT 161,ZL 161, and VTP 162 pumps, the max mark is the tip of those
arrowheads (long triangles) and the min is the bottom of the spindle
itself. The specified temp is 25C-50C, and the actual distance is cited
as 28-36mm below the edge of the reservoir.

The more I think of it, I recall finding the arrow on the center
piece. I have been leaving about an inch because that's what I found
on non-leaking systems. good thing, I was only off by a couple of mms.

the side with the holes should be up.

Got to thinking (always dangerous) ...

When I put in the new power steering filter yesterday afternoon ('77

there was nothing that I saw to indicate which side went up. I guessed and
at 2 am this morning suddenly realized that I'd probably guessed wrong.

Over the lunch hour, I drained the fluid (it was already pretty dirty from
mixing in with what was in the lines) and this time put the filter in with
the plate on the top. I then did NOT use the plate that I'd removed with
 the
 factory (?) filter.

Is the plate side of the filter supposed to be on the top? In case anyone
 is
wondering, I did look thru the maintenance CDs but couldn't find anything
beyond how to check the fluid level. Nothing on the filter itself.

I'm not familiar with any plate but you should be looking at holes,
lots of holes, when you move the fluid out of the way. Leave some
breathing room when you fill it. There is no fill line, I leave an
inch or so space.
