Re: [MBZ] Wiper Blades

Jerry,

Rain-x is a synthetic hydrophobic that is applied to glass surfaces to allow
water to bead and run off.

Just as you see water bead and run off a freshly waxed painted surface, Rain-x
does much the same.

For that matter, if you buy the product and apply it to your windshield, you
rarely have to turn your wipers on.

I have used it since it originally came on the market when it was sold through
dealers much like Amsoil is.

Good stuff, but follow the instructions closely so it is applied properly.

As for the wiper insert issue, I suspect it's a combination of costs, profit
margins and convenience for the consumer...

I just changed my worn out wiper blades. The new package recommends a change
every six months. I had these on for at least five years. Anyway, the new
ones were the Rain-X brand and included a little wipe that you apply to the
windshield in a circular motion and then wipe off. When dry, you turn on the
new wipers for 3 - 5 minutes. I did as I was told after cleaning the
windshield. The package doesn't say exactly what this does. Does one of you
 know what this accomplishes?
While on the topic, why do the auto parts stores no longer sell just the
rubber insert? It seems wasteful to buy a new holder and throw the old one
away. Is this to justify paying $30 for a new set of blades that used to cost
 a few dollars?

Re: [MBZ] Wiper Blades

2012-01-23 Thread Alex Chamberlain
On Sat, Jan 21, 2012 at 10:14 PM, Rick Knoble rickkno...@hotmail.com wrote:
Any opinions on what are good wiper blades?

Ah, a subject that is near and dear to my heart. A wiper-blade thread
to me is like an oil thread to normal people.

For normal cars I like Tricos. Their refills work better with their
own blades rather than trying to fit them into your factory blades.
You can get Tricos in any size from RockAuto.com. A good alternative
is the NAPA Exact Fit house brand (which is probably OEM'd by
someone respectable, just like how their Gold oil filters are
actually made by Wix).

For monowiper Mercedes, you MUST use the OEM refills that Rusty sells.
Bosch is not the same and WILL streak.

One thing that's frequently overlooked on monowiper cars is tension of
the blade against the windshield. Not only should you periodically
replace the whole blade (not just the insert) so that the blade claw
assemblies are as springy as new, but the wiper arm also needs
replacing periodically. I have found on 124s that it is pretty much
worn out after 20+ years. Replacing it is dead simple (one bolt holds
it to the wiper transmission) and will make a huge difference in
performance. (The part that wears out is a big spring inside the arm.
It might be possible to replace that with a generic hardware-store
spring, but I haven't tried.) Note that early and late 124s have a
slightly different arm, and only the later version is still available.
The arm and blade are a matched set, so if you upgrade to the later
arm, get a blade too.

The wiper motors and transmissions on monowiper cars get slower as
they get older, too. There's supposed to be a trick to opening up the
transmission, but I've never figured it out. Others have reported
that when they got it open, the grease inside was dried solid.
Cleaning the gears with a good solvent and refilling the unit with
low-temperature grease ought to make a big difference in wiper speed.
The motor is still available, although I've wondered if it could be
replaced by a generic one with more torque---sites like
www.sciplus.com and www.allelec.com sell a variety of 12VDC motors.

Last but not least, cleanliness of the windshield greatly affects
wiper performance. Depending where you live and what kinds of
interesting chemicals are in the air (and on the road, being thrown up
on your windshield by the car in front of you), different cleaning
regimens may be necessary. Simple Green, rubbing alcohol, Bon Ami,
and glass polish applied with a buffer are all worth trying, in
decreasing order of ease.

Depends on what we're putting them in.
I just got some funny branded ones at Advance for my Ranger, ~$13 apiece but
they work real good.

A 123 car and anything with a mono-wiper gets Bosch, NO EXCEPTIONS. IIRC a 123
car takes an 18 blade and the Bosch must be metric because they're about 1/4
longer than anything else at FLAPS and don't have the annoying non-overlap
every other brand I've tried presents.

in the reservoir 4-5 times after driving a bit between changes) and
changed the filter too.
The fluid that came out of the PS was thick in comparison to the
Amsoil stuff. It looked like it started out life as a clear fluid but
was pretty dirty. Kinda grey with the usual aluminum /metallic swirl.
There is definitely less effort required to turn the wheel after the
changeover. I've had this happen numerous times when changing PS fluid
even when I used plain old Dexron III w/Mercron rather than Mobil 1 or
Amsoil. My wagon when I first got it used to bind a little when it was
way cold, like 10-25 below 0 F. Changing to synthetic fluid cured
that. I can't really tell any difference between the Amsoil and Mobil 1
but I can tell you that both brands improve tranny feel as well as
steering input. The Amsoil fluid is supposed to be good up to
100,000mi. What's Mobil's claim for longevity on their synthetic tranny
fluid?

I agree that changing the PS or transmission fluid (even to NORMAL
stuff) usually makes things feel better. Mobil 1 made them feel even better!

Mercedes transmissions need to have the filter AND fluid changed every
30 kmi or a little sooner - it's not the fluid life, but to get all the
particulate (from the clutches) out and to replace the filter.

Just curious... why not buy the OE blade assembly from Rusty (or your
local dealer), they just get the OE/dealer refills in the future? Or
buy a couple of refills with the blade so you're all set for a few
years. On some models (like the early 124's) this is about the only
way to get a blade that fits perfectly. On a side note, I hear that
applying Formula 303 periodically can make them last longer - not sure
if it helps much or not.

and it's all you can find, they'll work until you can get some Bosch
wipers, ( except on 126, I tried to put a set of ancos on my '82 300sd
in a jam, and the things just wouldn't mount up, even though the catalog
showed it as a fit )

   Anco Universal Refill $ 4.99

Bosch Microedge Excel (comp. assy.) $ 12.99

Any comments on which one would be the best value?

One of the numerous times I was over in Cal last year, I needed to get
wiperblades for the VW. I went to the store where those three cartoon guys
work and they had Michelin replacment blades. They are awesome. I don't
believe they were crazy expensive. They wierd thing is, I never see them for
sale anywhere anymore...

What model of car? Use whatever you want for 123s or 126s. 124s and
201s are much more fussy, thanks to the accursed monowiper---I get
acceptable performance out of mine only with OE refills (and this is
on a fresh blade and arm with good spring tension: I just replaced the
whole deal last year with the newer version from late 124s, which I
highly recommend as an upgrade).

Both of the Bosch blades work well for my cars (I preferred the Excels
when they were available), but the Excel assemblies are no longer
available for my '85+ 190Ds with monowipers. I have to use the Microedge
refills and build my own (Bosch just doesn't sell a complete assembly
that fits the 201 chassis any more).

That 303 Aerospace stuff rocks.
Out here in the summer when you put stuff on your dash or seats it off
gasses and fogs up the windows in just a few days. 303 goo off gasses very,
very little. On the other hand, Armor All type goo makes it look like I have
smoked one hundred packs of Pall Malls while sitting at a stop light.
