It's all about getting weight over the driving wheels. When I lived in
Ann Arbor I had a Volvo 240DL wagon and my boyfriend had a '99 Chevy
Malibu. (He's still got the Malibu, but the tinworm got the Volvo.)
The Volvo initially was *terrible* in the snow, but the Malibu was like
a tractor -- great traction and it went where you pointed it. I put 120
pounds of sand in the back of the Volvo and suddenly it was much better,
almost a match for the Malibu. You do have to be more on your toes with
a RWD car, though, because it will oversteer and fishtail, while a FWD
car will just understeer. Most people find understeer more intuitive to
deal with, which I suspect is part of the reason FWD cars have a
reputation for being good in snow.

Some cars are going back to rear wheel drive. Several Chrysler products are
- like the 300 series.

Front wheel drive only took over because it saved about 300 pounds. It's not
as safe as rear wheel drive and you can't get great performance and handling
when you are steering with the same wheels you are driving with.

FWD's vaunted snow handling ability was informally put to the test
a few years ago by Click Clack, they compared an Acura to some
old land yacht on a nasty day. The land yacht sailed circles
around the Acura, and they attributed it all to weight. FWD lets
you make a lighter car but with more of its weight on the driven
wheels, approximating the traction a heavier car would have.
That's pretty much all it does for you.

Best snow traction I've ever had was in our 4WD pickup carrying

Nothing beats a good set of tire chains for traction. I had vans for
many years and they were terrible when empty. Especially LWB HD
models. Chains changed that but they make the ride is terrible. I used
to keep a load of hay in my vans in the winter. Fed right out of the
van and I built a wall to make the passenger compartment smaller and
easier to keep warm . The hay kept it nice and quiet too.

I could not disagree more. When I bought my 90 300D I was driving a

around. During a particularly nasty snow/ice storm. I still had the

So, was the 124 an ancient land yacht? No, it's a modern,
lighter car. A few hundred pounds of sand in the trunk
would have transformed it, no doubt.
