Re: [MBZ] loop style glow plug retrofit options?
I would use stranded from the first plug in the 'chain' to the relay. Which should, of course, already be there as part of the series system you're replacing. -- Jim

Copper work-hardens and becomes brittle when it flexes. I would use stranded from the first plug in the 'chain' to the relay. VWs are wired roughly this way, with a copper bus bar that lays across the tops of the plugs and connects them together.

Get the pencil plugs installed, wire them all in parallel, and connect them to one side of a Ford-style starting relay. Connect the other side through a 70A fuse to the battery. Connect one side of the relay's coil to the battery and the other to a pushbutton inside the passenger compartment which is then connected to ground. Push the button in, count to 10 (or 30 or 60 if it's cold) and crank it over. After the engine is turning, you can push the button in again for custom post-start glowing to smooth out the running and reduce emissions. Craig

The old relay works just fine. What he said. Electrically, I should be able to just daisy chain the wires from one plug to the next, but that's probably less than optimum. Any idea where I might source some nice, pre-crimped, stranded cables? If solid was good enough for the toaster racks, why not just get some nice 10ga or 12ga solid household wire from Home Despot? -- Jim

Back in my day we would have hooked up a push button. Then told him push the button in, count to 10 then start. The 79 240D we rescued from the rust demon / crusher is having trouble coping with the suddenly cold Pa fall. Specifically, it's not starting well. Last weekend my son and I adjusted the valves and I think we improved things a bit there. Last night I turned my attention back to the glow plug system and to my dismay, I found that it is indeed an old loop style series system. (Verified by pulling a plug to make doubly sure.) I chatted with Rusty this morning and found out that, unfortunately, the Bosch conversion kits are unavailable (backordered). The replacement pencil plugs are available however. So I'm trying figure out what my options are for a conversion without the kit. I have the guts of the glow system from my deceased 82 300D (including the control module and wires) if that's worth anything. Any advice from some of our more handy list members (Jim Cathey?) greatly appreciated. I really don't want my son to have to wrestle and pray each time he tries to get the car started after school.. ...Kevin 87 300TD 280k mi 79 240D 157k mi ___ http://www.okiebenz.com For new parts see official list sponsor: http://www.buymbparts.com/ For used parts email [EMAIL PROTECTED] To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com
