to my mind, 174hp out of 2.4 liter naturally aspirated motor with a lot of
torque is A ROCKET by any means.

Anything more than 1 horsepower per cubic inch used to be the standard for
performance cars and that was before net hp figures. 2.4 liters is 145 or so
cubic inches so that IS pretty impressive.

Re: [MBZ] why you can't even in this day buy anydomesticcarunlessthe design and execution has been proven

2007-07-08 Thread Tom Hargrave
I used to play with Chrysler 2.2 liter cars one of the cars I owned was a
89 Lebaron Coupe GTC. The intercooled Turbo II engine was factory rated at
174 HP. Fortunately, I live in Huntsville AL, where the brains were
designed and manufactured.

I knew the software guys got a off road only performance engine control
computer. The new computer plus exhaust modifications pushed the engine to
224 HP.

The secret?

At full throttle, the original computer spiked the turbo boost at 15 PSI and
then immediately dropped boost back to 12 PSI. Also, timing was seriously
retarded under full boost.

The off road only performance engine control computer ran boost to 15 PSI
held it there. Plus, timing was not retarded as much.

Exhaust modifications consisted of removing the cat.

And the results?

The car ran 92 octane or higher premium only, no exceptions.

The cruise control was no longer functional. Something to do with the
original source code.

The car had so much torque that the two front tires would walk, they would
alternately hop up down as the two axles twisted untwisted.

I ran 205 55 VR16 tires the most I got out of a set of front tires was
19,000 miles.

The added torque eventually twisted apart the area where the front motor
mount fastened. From then on, I had to get sheet metal re-welded as it split
apart again and again. A couple of years later, aftermarket came up with a
permanent solution involving a shock / spring assembly that mounted from the
rear of the engine.

Anyone who believes you can't get performance out of a Chrysler, even back
then, really does not understand. You just need to know how..

Thanks,
Tom Hargrave
