Thanks for your answers! I've been tinkering with merkaartor for the last few days and I must say, it is nicely written. I have written custom tool/Interaction for it, and possibly fixed a long standing crash (not sure yet, needs more testing).
I will let Chris know I would be glad to maintain the Merkaartor, although I won't have time to do anything big in the following months, only small features and possible bugfixes.
