There are hard internal modems. Look at the instructions on how to install it for Linux. It may say that you just make a symbolic link /dev/modem to an existing device, or it may have you make a device /dev/ttyS4 and run setserial on it, and still be a hardware modem. But if you have to install a

Personally, I always go with an external modem. It's much less hassle if you need to cycle the power on the modem, or it's taken out by a lightning hit or other surge in the phone line, or from some other failure. It's way easier to swap modems when diagnosing "is it the modem that's broken, or th
