Hi Tom,
I remember hearing somewhere that one of the field tests for E chondrites is
a sulphur smell.
The other thing is that depending upon where it was found, it might have
been used for, well how do I say this, another purpose where nature called

Not only sulfur compounds but elements under the same column in the periodic table with similar chemisty can smell real bad. Then there's osmium a rare element but found in higher concentration in meteorites that name means smelly. Osmium compounds are also extremely toxic too. I doubt it but I

Dear list members,
We just received several emails concerning the Olivine Diogenite (NWA 1459).
Some asked if there might be a pairing. No, there are no pairings and no
other meteorite since NWA 1459 has been defined to belong this rare group.
The final abstract will be public within a week on
I have felt the same thing here in S.E. Florida. I have a feeling it might be the Navy experimenting with ultra low feq. submarine communications or detection. They have a base in the Bahamas.

Steve,
Troilite is the mineral iron-sulphide. I
would guess that sulphur and iron mixed insections of iron meteorites as
the material was cooling and formed these pockets. Perhaps someone more
learned on the list could explain better. Not much in R.F.S. or The
Encylopedia or Met. T.

Steve:
Troilite is FeS. A terrestrial analog is the mineral Pyrrhotite Fe(1)S.
Any troilite cavities are probably what is referred to as vugs that
may (or may not) have contained troilite but went from a solid to a gas
from shock. Evidence of this would be in the mineralogy of the vug's lining.

I have a smallendcut of NWA 803

Hi Jeff, Steve and List
There is a great book (and offhand, I can't remember
the name of the author) but its called Opaque Minerals
in Meteorites and goes into detail on these minerals
which don't show up other than black blebs under
crossed polars.
