Most clear coat finishes contain water which acts as a solvent and are designed to be applied over a base coat. The base coat is designed to be applied over a primer. The primer is the sealant designed to be in direct contact with metal.

By skipping the first two processes, you would be applying water or a solvent directly to metal, something that is considered sacrilege in the automotive industry.

The life span of clear coats is about ten years and even less for lacquer.
