another five specimens (10-30 cm) have apparently been raised from the bottom
of lake Chebarkul today:

Wow, they have pulled up some serious kilos of fragments! It seems the mass
shattered on impact with the ice surprisingly. I'm
glad they are recovering this material.
Clearly nice large brecciated pieces.

I know what you mean Mike. I was thinking one honking big lump down there.
On reflection though, I can imagine a couple of feet of ice giving as good
as it gets at the collision speeds involved. Judging by the propensity of
tiny bits this big one may well have been pretty beat up and fractured

in the water. Now the question is home mush will it oxidize on the surface.
I wonder if the state of this fragment will hold true for the mother load :)

I've seen ugly fragments on eBay that looked much worse, and they
weren't sitting at the bottom of a lake for 6 months.

Would being partially buried and temperature have an effect on it?
Just wondering. Would cooler/colder temps slow the rusting process?
