I'm going to pull a Dubya. That story about the dog is an historical authentic rumour. Nakhla has been blamed for a death of a dog even if that dog never been produced. It still may turn up someday once a thorough search has been conducted by the experts in lost pets.

Unless stories are corroborated, I do not think they are taken
seriously.
I have not been privileged to read "Rain of Iron and Ice" but hope to
do so in future.
My reference "Uh oh" is to a unending debate between Kevin Kechinka and
Ron Baalke over the 1911 death of the Egyptian dog.
