Sad news. Dick Pugh, a member of our lab (CML) shown with Brahin below,
had a small teaching collection of meteorites stolen from his pickup

There has been major theft of rare and valuable material being shipped
from Tucson. Specimens were taken from a shipping box after placement with a
shipping company in Tucson.

have been found and have made their way home. Two months ago i discovered them
missing from my office at the Institute for Astronomy, and reported the crime

Gary,
I'm just glad I was able to help and that my curiosity prompted me to place
those pictures on the web. The irons I knew, but the eucrite definitely had
piqued my interest. And I'm glad they made it safely to the rightful owner.

Every email leaves a digital paper trail. The thief should be

This is a shame and I hope the thief is caught. Everyone please keep

Hi
It would be nice if everyone would photograph all of the material they
purchase. Then if it went missing, it would help identify it. I believe
everyone on this list is honorable and do not want to purchase lost, stolen ,
or illegal to export material. The wonderful thing about meteorites is the

That was a wake up event I live out beyond the crackheads and
such, so I don't have to worry about theft much. My
went missing does not necessarily mean stolen. There are many posts here on the
list of samples being lost in the mail during shipping or air travel. All of
the events are unfortunate. Provenance and photos facilitate recovery. Cheers!

I wondered why the names of people were available. That's what's
going on then maybe.
I used to sell a lot of Roseville pottery and I always insured. The
insurance is with the seller, not the buyer, and the seller should

I don't think it's right to have given these names outat all

Hi Anne,
Thanks for the tip on this. I personally have not been offered this
material, but I will keep my eye out for it and the thieves who have
it.
Does the IMCA keep a centralized listing of stolen material for the
public to keep watch for?
Best regards,

Wow, I can see being able to pocket something small, but how does somebody walk
off with 100+ pounds of meteorites?
Much of the meteorites noted were stolen from tables outside of hotels at
night, covered with a sheet I guess. This of course means anyone in Tucson
could have taken them, and not just meteorite people.
The Lang auction thefts have a more limited suspect pool I would image.
