Mark B.I'd have to say andesite (definitely not granite).
Well...after some page turning and googling etc, I have to now agree with
Mark that this rock is probably some sort of andesite...and definitely not
granite. I've never seen so many different rocks that I formerly simply

Most andesites have phenocrysts. This one doesn't. Still could be
andesite, but maybe not.

Mark, Carl, List,
I've scoured the web looking for photographs of andesite
and see
OK,
Anyone have an idea of what the heck this is?

Sorry for the question... But this thing looks too good...

I have no idea, but you have my curiosity going as well.
It looks like a meteorite on the outside.

Sorry for the question...
Looks like a fine grained basalt covered with desert varnish.
I see no fusion crust (flow lines etc.) and no regamaglypts. In the
cut surface, no metal, no chondrules, and no heat affected zone.

Are those metal flecks on the sawn face? Does it hold a magnet?

Yup... sure does. It's got me looking twice at it.
I thought it was a meteorite at first, but it's non-magnetic and no
visible iron. Then when I lifted it from the box it's lighter than
normal. There's some tiny flecks of something that might be metal but
super small and only shows up under
Nope... and nope...

Quite possibly could be a basalt of some sort.
It's lighter than you would expect for a rock of this size though. I go
through hundreds of meteorites per week, and this one just jumped out at
me. This is why I ask... When I don't know the best thing is to ask
someone who does. ;)

It sorta looks like an earth rock to me...maybe gneiss?

my second guess is a fine grained granite from earth. I've seen granite
just like this as xenoliths embedded in coarser grained granite behind the
Mt. Helix Station in La Mesa up near the top of the cross. I believe Eric

Hello again everyone,
I have the new photos of the meteorwrongs I found at Fronconia and
the one I think might just be a meteorite. It's only one stone out of
all the hundreds we saw out there and 1 out of the 20 or so I picked
up. I'll leave it to you guys to decide whether it's the real
I posted this to the list earlier and it didn't appear (at least it

While it was determined by experts that the NJO is not a meteorite,

Dear Listees;
As you have recently seen on the list, there is always someone needing
more information on meteorwrong and meteorite identification. I have
just taken some of my meteorites (meager small things that they are) and
some of my beautifully classic meteorwrongs (massive magnetite, 3
