heritage? Viewed from a slightly broader view than we sometimes do on
this list, meteorites are items of both financial and scientific value.

The reason laws are passed to keep meteorites in a country
can be summed up in one word:
Money!
As the old saying goes: Follar the Dollar. (Translation: that is
Arkansas for: Follow the Dollar.)

something,that to me is a real steamer,that makes me a
really upset,as to why certain countries prevent
meteorites from being able to leave without proper
papers.You have Australia,Canada,Oman,and now

Some counties, fortunately, decided (before it was too late) they
needed to protect items they considered an important part of their
culture, heritage, natural resources, etc. We are all very sadly
aware what happens when there are no rules. It is the nature of
humans to overuse, over kill
The reasoning? That's easy Steve, pick one:
- exercising absolute state authority,
- exercising autocratic authority
- exercising complete regulation by the state
- exercising a monopoly
BTW, in response to someone's statement about artifacts, I fail to
find meteorite crouched anywhere in the
