Distinguishing between terrestrial olivine and pallasite olivine
probably isn't quick and easy. Electron microprobe would show the
difference in the Fe/Mn which is diagnostic. I've never used one, but
a handheld XRF might be able to do this too. If you don't mind
vaporizing the stone with a laser
Once again, I have found someone on ebay (surprise factor zero, Captain!)
selling what I am convinced are fake pallasite cut gems. Unlike the last fake
seller I confronted, this seller seems willing to entertain the idea he may
have a fake or two, and wants to look into having them tested.

This is what I am able to get from the person that does my testing -
It is the Documentation for NWA 5799 - A very nice, but ordinary LL4

Other than an experienced educated individual, exactly what
equipment is required to classify a meteorite?
Assuming you have a carbon-coated thin section of your meteorite,
a petrologic microscope and an electron microprobe will be sufficient
for chondrites. --Rob

Hello List and happy new year's! I once brought a suspected meteorite to ASU
and they took it and tested it with something that gave a printout of all
the minerals contained in the stone. What was that test? Can I get that same
test done on an unclassified meteorite?
Thanks, Tom
Peregrineflier
Tom, The test you refer to is called a Particle-induced X-ray Emission
spectrometer
or ( PIXE ). They will test an unclassified meteorite, but you don`t want
to send the
whole thing to them. They may keep it.
I want to wish you and the list a bountiful and Happy New Year!

Did you ever notice that most list members that send tests to the list are using AOL ? Why don't you guys dump looser AOL and get a real ISP?

Did you ever notice
AOL may not be (and arguably isn't) the best ISP out there, but at least I know that
when I wake up each morning I'm not going to hear that my ISP just went belly-up.
Want to take a poll of the list and see how many participants had to find anoher ISP
because their's did within the last 12
