[meteorite-list] Sikhote-Alin Impact Pits - Interesting Update

2007-03-05 Thread Jeff Kuyken
G'day all,

I received a very interesting email today from someone who had read through
my Sikhote-Alin Impact Pit page. They sent me a couple of photographs of a
large gun on Corregidor Island, Philippines which was damaged from a WW2
bomb. The resulting damage is unmistakably similar to the pits found on some
SA's. The pics are at the bottom of this page:

http://www.meteorites.com.au/features/impactpits.html

Comments welcome. Does anyone know what type/size of gun this is?

Cheers,

Jeff

Re: [meteorite-list] Sikhote-Alin Impact Pits - Interesting Update

2007-03-05 Thread Sterling K. Webb
Hi, Jeff,

This is a coastal defense gun, intended to be used
against approaching naval forces. The longest-range
coastal pieces were the two 12-inch guns of Batteries
Hearn and Smith, with a horizontal range of 29,000 yards.
Although capable of an all around traverse, these guns,
due to their flat trajectories, were not effective for use
against targets on Bataan, so that they could not be used
against the Japanese after they had occupied it!
The gun in your photo is one of those two guns,
but I can't say whether it was Battery Hearn or Battery
Smith.
The other 12-inch Batteries were mortars rather
than long-range guns. They brought the most destruction
on Japanese positions during the attempted landings on
the southwest coast of Bataan late in January to the
middle of February, 1942. These mortars were silenced
by enemy shelling in May, 1942.
Battery Geary was a battery of six 13-ton, 12-inch
mortars. This battery, when pinpointed by the Japanese,
was subjected to heavy shelling. One direct hit by a
240 mm shell, which detonated the magazines of this
Battery in May 1942, proved to be the most crippling
shot during the entire siege of Corregidor. This shelling
tossed the mortars around, one to a distance of 150 yards,
another was blown through three feet of reinforced
concrete wall into the adjoining powder magazine of
Battery Crockett. Large chunks of steel were blown as
far as the Malinta Tunnel, while 27 of the battery crew
were killed instantly.

[meteorite-list] New Exciting Desert Delicacies - pictures

2007-03-05 Thread Martin Altmann
Dear List,

We would like to share a few photos of interesting desert finds with you,
which we acquired during the last months in Morocco, and which are worth
being looked at in our opinion. Unfortunately, we hadn't time yet to prepare
the pieces for the classification, but we'll send samples of these pieces as
soon as possible to the lab. Enjoy the pictures.

A very strange meteorite of only about 25g which is probably a carbonaceous
chondrite. But at the moment we have no idea which exact type of a
c-chondrite it might be. Because of the very dark colouring and the relative
softness, it could be a CM or maybe a metamorphosed c-chondrite. Only on a
polished surface one can see a few, very small round objects (chondrules?)
which are as dark as the surrounding matrix. By the way this meteorite was
offered as a possible CI chondrite in Morocco, and in spite of the high
price we couldn't resist to buy it. This meteorite is perhaps a very
interesting study material.
http://www.chladnis-heirs.com/carbonaceous.jpg

This achondrite looks very similar to the Agoult eucrite at the first view.
But it was a little surprise to see the interior after cutting. Beside the
Agoult-typical matrix is a different lithology found, which is more coarser
grained.
http://www.chladnis-heirs.com/achondrite2.jpg

The following meteorite is very nicely oriented and has a typical button
shape.
The interior explodes of tiniest metal flakes, but chondrules are completely
absent and if it won't turn out to be an enstatite chondrite of a high
grade, then it will be certainly a very uncommon type of high interest.
http://www.chladnis-heirs.com/iron-rich.jpg

Last but not least for those, who hadn't the opportunity to visit our room
in Tucson, here another picture of the 606g lunaite, which - without wanting
to anticipate the classification - seems to be a piece of the fresh
graulitic impactite NWA 3163/4483. It isn't a new find, the existence of
that piece was known since end of 2005. But for several reasons it was very
difficult to get.

Best wishes,
Chladni's Heirs

Moni's post I found most interesting of all,
I like it / I don't like it.
H. sounds like it is the way you look at it. And most
certainly, everyone has a right to look at things their own way. I
might look at that cannon and think, Why, that's DISGUSTING!
That cannon killed people and now someone is using it to demonstrate
the effect of high velocity shrapnel and how it can closely resemble
the venerable Sikhote-Aline meteorites! OR, one could look at it the
way the person who presented it does.
I, personally, found the Meteorite Blog a sewer and was highly
offended that someone was making obscene posts to it using my name.
I immediately stopped going there - this was about 2 hrs into its
existence. For all I know it is still going strong. I don't know - I don't
care. I stopped going there. It is none of my business if other people like
it or not.
I was one of the first to be lampooned by Proud Tom - and fairly
heavily so. I laughed until it hurt. Others, some of whom I respected
a great deal found it offensive when they were lampooned. I don't get
it, but that is their right. Chicago Steve's response was one of the things
endeared him to me. Say what you like, he can laugh at himself.
I find it interesting that most of the positive responses have been
sent to me privately and all of the negatives were posted to the list, even
though I explicitly asked for positives only, pointing out that 1) the
negatives have a choice - don't go to his site and 2) if there were a lack
of any positive response I assume Proud Tom would find it not worth
his while to post a web page.
To liken his humor to use of the N word is absurd. As I said, he
poked fun at me as vigorously as he did anyone. As for the original
Tom that inspired the baboonery, I know him well and he is a fine
fellow, indeed. Sometimes it HELPS to laugh at yourself. But clearly
some among us cannot find that path. That's OK, just don't go to his site.
This is like a politician getting all hot and bothered because Mad
Magazine does a riff on him. Good grief, people, if you take yourselves
that seriously, just don't check out his site. He doesn't use the list other
than to invite those who want to to visit his web site. So, buck up and
pull a Barbara Bush and just don't go. Leave the rest of us to our drugs...
er, Proud Tom.
I won't say any more about this - so all you Proud Tom Bashers can
have at it. Bash the hell out of him. It is better than the usual picking
on real people that periodically bursts forth on the list, anyway.
He'll either make some more humor pages or he won't - if he
does, he maybe he will lampoon the bashing against him. Bet most of you
won't be able to resist checking that out. Sorry, but THAT strikes my funny
bone, as well. Guess I'm just a pervert.. but lest any of you think so
(and I know some do) I am NOT Proud Tom. I am not that witty.
Long live the Nakhla Dog and Proud Tom, though I fear we may never
see the likes of either of them again.
(maybe he'll make a SECRET page and only those that write me off
list will be able to get the URL - then he will exist only in the DEEP
UNDERGROUND dark side of the meteorite world and spare the offended
list members from being exposed to even seeing his URL - if he does, I
promise not to tell anyone who asks for the URL and who doesn't. bet
requests include some of the nay sayers, though. Go for it Proud Tom,
NO ONE WILL EVER KNOW!)
Best wishes, Michael

It's an artillery M-series M1895 (M1895M1A4) 305mm (12-inch) Coastal Defense
Gun (made in about 1895) on an M1917 Barbette Carriage. The big gun can
fire a 900 pound (409 kg) nicely oriented shell over 16 miles (26.5 km)
range through the atmosphere at sea level. At least part of the technical
manual is apparently actively available on eBay:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItemitem=140091777488

These aptly named batteries of big guns and mortars (Crockett, but not
Davy:-), etc.) were the ones that the Americans held out with for a month in
an Alamo-like encounter with the Japanese, in which that now long ago
inspiring heroic effort on this island with the sacrifices protected
Ozitrailia from invasion.

If it were not so nicely an oriented shell ... I doubt it would make it 5
miles. That's more than 10 extra miles out of orientation ... though a
little heavier than the Venus stone ...

More information on the battle is available at:
http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Corregidoraction=editsection=7

And here is the picture of the original gun model, though sandblasted
repainted spruced up now theme park style gun to accompany the wiki text
which can be compared to Jeff's reader's picture:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:US_12_Inch_Gun.jpg

There were a pair of these M1895 guns on these carriages according to the
website corregidor.org, in addition to other recessed M1895's of the same
caliber, many of which are tourist attractions there today. Originally the
pair on carriages was called the Smith Brothers, named after the Smith
Brothers' cough drops, and they were fondly known as Pat and Pending. (But
later one was named Hearn, and the humor was lost. C. C. Hearn, a West
Point Graduate and Naval Coastal defenses expert invented a plotting board
and a super accurate range finder which he gave to the government rather
than patenting).

And we think WE live in violent times!
Best health, Doug

Hmm, all very well and good, and usually most people can take a well
meant joke and laugh with it, that is until someone then finds it deeply
offensive or hurtful or harmful to their lively hood then its suddenly
not quite so funny any more. In today's, ip logged, globally litigious

these things seem like a good idea at the time, but they can actually

That said, there has to be a joke about 'Gao's' there somewhere! :) lol.

[meteorite-list] Carsten's NWA 4679 CK4

2007-03-05 Thread bernd . pauli
Hello List,

I'd like to forward a mail I received from John Divelbiss re: Carsten's new
CK4 chondrite. John is one of those who are having problems sending posts
to the List but some of us, especially the owners of this unique CK4 chondrite,
will find John's comments very interesting! Best wishes, Bernd

Hello Bernd and Carsten,

First off I want to congratulate Carsten for coming up with this beauty. It
really is
a unique meteorite. Also, I must tell you how surprised I was at the size of
slice I
received. A 1 mm thick, 7.9 gram slice is BIG ! Yes, Bernd the 7.9 g slice
(#6)
is mine now. I must tell you that my interest in that slice was the darker,
less feature-
less areas...in particular the different colors/hues that you noted. In person
those hues
and shapes are even more distinct. To me it is melt material, and not a clast
or clasts.
I have many melts in my collection, and I believe this qualifies as one too.

The darker, what I'll call black, material with the triangular wedge is almost
featureless.
The features I do see seem to be what is left of chondrules and/or CAI's that
have been
melted. In almost all cases these small spots are white or light brown. Many
of the nice
chondrules/CAI's in the meteorites normal texture near the darker melt areas
also seem
to have melted rims around them too, which to me also suggests that this
meteorite has been
heated by impact.

Are we sure we are not looking at a unique CK 4-6 impact melt? With the 6 being
the darkest
areas, and the in between 5 areas being the brown hued material at the edge
of the meteorite
in my slice where the remaining features in it are more numerous and more
distinct than the black
6 area, yet different and less distinct than the areas with the nice shaped
chondrules and CAI's
in the bulk 4 area.

Carsten...whoever (scientist) is looking at this meteorite is going to have a
lot of
thinking to do to come up with a final report/analysis about this extraordinary
find.

John

Hi,

I have to agree with Mark Ford - I think it is a little dangerous to launch
into someone and take the mickey without their express consent. If Proud
Tom wants to do a friendly jibe on someone then I think it would be
appropriate, professional and respectful for PT to email the individual
asking his permission.
Otherwise, like Anne Black says - it does nothing for the Meteorite

BTW - I take it no one was interested in the Ex AML Lalande!

OT - I know - as some of you know I also collect terrestrial rocks and have
just traded some stuff for what is probably the finest example of a

Hello again,

I am sorry to disagree with you again Michael, but I believe you missed the
point. This has nothing to do with anyone being able to take some ribbing
every now and then.

Please read Howard (bencubbin) email again: Considering all the positive
publicity generated by Steve Arnold and Geoff Notkin in promoting meteorites,
what contribution will the resurrection of Proud Tom have? Will it have a
positive or negative affect in the eyes of people who are taking a new
interest
in meteorites?

Or as Tom puts it: The list is in the best shape it's been in for some
time, so let's try to keep uplifting our members as we are presently doing with

those who are sick and hurting, and also endeavor to not be the cause of pain
or mental anguish for any member.

The Meteorite Community as a whole needs all the positive publicity it can
get, anything negative must be avoided. And as you well know, anything
published on the Net can and will become public eventually. As you said the
meteorite
blog was (is?) a sewer, and I entirely agree with you. But I find it
interesting that you are the one who associated Proud Tom with the Blog!

So, let's not go there. As Chicago-Steve said may he rest in piece.

Thank you Howard, Tom, Jerry, Dean, Dave, and all the others for your wise
comments.

Greetings all,
I have come across many falls (such as Kilabo) where a fall is
reported to occur throughout a villiage, with many stones recovered,
yet none are reported to hit a hut, shed, house, or the like. (In the
instance of Kilabo, it is reported to have fallen in 5 different villages).
There MUST be a hammer or two whenever there are dozens of
recoveries in a village. For instance, I have nine different hammers from
Park Forest.
Does anyone know how it can be that entire villages are pelted and
not one hammer is included in the report?
Best wishes, Michael

[meteorite-list] AUCKLAND METEORITE PHOTO

2007-03-05 Thread dean bessey
Thought somebody would like this photo. The meteorite
is way cool looking. Better than my photo shows. This
is truely one of the worlds nicest meteorites. In the
museum it is behind a dark glass and hard to take
photos of. I had to photoshop the colors a bit to get
it looking semi nice for my photo.
I emailed the auckland museum and asked if it would be
possible to get it taken out of the case so that I
could get some really nice photos of it (I tried to
bribe them by offering to donate a 25 gram slice of my
CV3 if I could get some decent photos taken of it) but
I got a very nasty email back from the museum saying
that I should be well aware that it shouldent be
handled anymore than necessary so it could be
preserved for future generations to see. So I only
have a so so photo.
In any event my photo dont remotely do it justice but
you might like it anyway.

[meteorite-list] Suspected Meteorite Hits Illinois Home

Suspected meteorite hits Bloomington home
By M.K. Guetersloh
Pantagraph (Bloomington, Illinois)
March 5, 2007

UPDATE 2:30 p.m. BLOOMINGTON - A Bloomington couple caught a falling
star Monday morning not quite in their pockets but in a bedroom of their
house.

A chunk of metal that crashed through the bedroom window of David and
Dee Riddle just after 9:30 a.m. appears may be a meteorite but it also
could be a piece of space junk according to preliminary analysis by
several Illinois State University geology professors.

However, the professors who had a look at it agree that whatever the
heavy, gray metal-based object that crashed through their window
definitely came from space.

Robert Skip Nelson, a professor of geology at ISU, came out to
Riddles' home to take a look at the object, which is about the size and
shape of deck of cards.

Nelson said based on the density of the object, the metal could be an
iron-nickel mixture or a heavy stainless steel. It is unlikely a
satellite or spacecraft would contain metal that heavy and dense, Nelson
said.

In my 36 years of investigating meteorite calls, this looks like the
real thing, Nelson said.

Nelson said to be sure the next step will be to call the United State
Geological Survey's meteorite center in Flagstaff, Ariz.

Because of the steep entry angle into the house and the speed the object
crashed into the house, Nelson said is definitely was not a rock thrown
at the window.

Eric Peterson, an assistant professor of geology, calculated the speed
the possible meteorite hit the home was at least 60 miles an hour.

Dee Riddle, who runs a day-care out of their Partner Place house, said
she heard the crash and felt the house shake around 9:30 a.m.

My first thought was a bathroom mirror fell so I immediately started
looking, Riddle said. That's when I found the hole in the mini-blinds
and the broken window.

We were just lucky no one was sitting at the computer when it happened.

In addition to breaking through the window, the possible meteorite hit
the computer desk putting a hole through the particle board.

Nelson said the last confirmed meteorite to hit Bloomington was in the
1930s.

Dear Listees:

Greetings comrades. Viewers in North America who haven't seen our Cash

couple more chances to catch it tonight.

The show features the very lovely Becky Worley learning the ropes from
heavy duty meteorite hunters Steve Arnold, Mike Miller, Sonny Clary,
Ruben Garcia, and Keith Jenkerson, with yours truly making wisecracks.
The show opens with Darryl Pitt of the Macovich Collection, and the
sharp-eyed will spot a very glamorous Mrs. MeteorHntr in the final
scene.

The episode is called Cash Treasures: Meteorites and as best I can
tell it airs at 8:30 and 11:30 pm this evening (Eastern Time) on the
Travel Channel, and at 9:30 pm (Pacific Time) on Travel Channel Pacific
(TRAVP) for viewers in the western states. I suggest checking your
local broadcast times as showtimes vary. The program is 30 minutes, and
usually airs back-to-back with another episode from the same series.

[meteorite-list] Suspected Meteorite Hits Illinois Home

2007-03-05 Thread Matson, Robert
Hi All,

Another mystery:

A chunk of metal that crashed through the bedroom window of David
and Dee Riddle just after 9:30 a.m. appears may be a meteorite but
it also could be a piece of space junk according to preliminary
analysis by several Illinois State University geology professors.

Through a window rather than through the roof? That means that the
object had a significant portion of its motion in a horizontal
direction, which is difficult to explain for a metallic object
that supposedly came from outside the atmosphere -- unless it
ricocheted off a tree or another object outside the window. I
wonder what the angle is (from vertical) between the desk impact
location and the hole in the window?

Because of the steep entry angle into the house and the speed the
object crashed into the house, Nelson said is definitely was not
a rock thrown at the window.

Well, the picture they show of the hole in the desk is on the desk
edge that I would assume was furthest from the window (given the
orientation of the computer monitor). So even if the desk is only
two feet deep and was butted up against the wall with the broken
window, trigonometry tells you that the entry angle was no
shallower than 20 degrees from vertical -- and that assumes a
desktop 30 off the floor in a room with a window as high as
8 feet off the floor. If the window is only as high as 7 feet,
the minimum angle increases to 24 degrees.

For comparison, if you fired a projectile horizontally at 500 mph,
7 miles above the earth (think metal falling off an airplane),
but did it in a vacuum, the projectile would hit the ground at
over 1600 mph, but an angle of only 18 degrees from vertical.
Adding back the atmosphere will only serve to slow down the
projectile and make its entry more vertical.

Now, given the object's odd shape, some amount of lift is possible,
but not enough (from the picture I've seen) to make the entry
angle 20 degrees from vertical. Conclusion: either this object
hit a tree or some other object before caroming through the
window, or it did not originate at a high altitude, let alone
space.

Re: [meteorite-list] Reduxin Proud Tom

2007-03-05 Thread Michael L Blood
Ah,
PT has already performed the needed function of giving
the gang a straw dog to kick around.
More than one person mentioned, what would a new-to-the
scene would be meteorite collector think of a PT web site (still
not clear how they would find it - but that is neither here nor
there).
Well, here is what I think a newbe would think if s/he did
somehow find a PT website: Hm interesting sense of humor
or even, not my kind of humor - what they WOULDN'T see is
a group of people who fancy themselves as serious, scientifically
minded meteorite collectors periodically attacking someone - usually
for imagined misdoings and even causing stress to the point of
a heart attack. That is what they WOULDN'T see on a PT web
site. More like the Don't have a gao, man! cartoon with C. Steve's
face pasted in and the like.
But that is just me - the real point everyone seems to ignore
sits like an elephant in the room: if you don't like his humor, don't
visit his site.
But, as I said in the beginning, he is already performing an
invaluable service as functioning as the current whipping boy
and, being fictional and all, I am confident he can take it.
So, maybe we can let it all go for now - then when someone
starts attacking Adam Hupe or Mike Farmer or Al Iris Lang
or Chicago Steve, or even Matteo, I will just post to the list the
threat of the possibility Proud Tom might appear on an obscure
web site somewhere and everyone can stop beating the hell out
of real people and pounce on the evil Proud Tom.
Ya, that's the ticket.
Best wishes, Michael

Robert Skip Nelson, a professor of geology at ISU, came out to
Riddles' home to take a look at the object, which is about the size and
shape of deck of cards.

Nelson said based on the density of the object, the metal could be an
iron-nickel mixture or a heavy stainless steel. It is unlikely a
satellite or spacecraft would contain metal that heavy and dense, Nelson
said.

In my 36 years of investigating meteorite calls, this looks like the
real thing, Nelson said.

Robert Skip Nelson needs to turn in his meteorite investigator card.
This
thing is so obviously, unambigiously NOT a meteorite that one of those
preschoolers in the first photo should be able to point it out:

I'm hard pressed to imagine a scenario by which a meteorite can land at
anything other than a near vertical angle. From the picture, it's
obvious this thing had some serious velocity (judging by the damage
especially to the magazine); I'll be curious to see what it turns out to
be. Maybe it got deflected by something like a rain gutter outside the
window?

 Suspected meteorite hits Bloomington home
 By M.K. Guetersloh
 Pantagraph (Bloomington, Illinois)
 March 5, 2007

 UPDATE 2:30 p.m. BLOOMINGTON - A Bloomington couple caught a falling
star Monday morning not quite in their pockets but in a bedroom of
 their

Robert Skip Nelson, a professor of geology at ISU, came out to
Riddles' home to take a look at the object, which is about the size
 and
 shape of deck of cards.

Nelson said based on the density of the object, the metal could be an
iron-nickel mixture or a heavy stainless steel. It is unlikely a
satellite or spacecraft would contain metal that heavy and dense,
 Nelson
 said.

In my 36 years of investigating meteorite calls, this looks like the
 real thing, Nelson said.

Nelson said to be sure the next step will be to call the United State
Geological Survey's meteorite center in Flagstaff, Ariz.

Because of the steep entry angle into the house and the speed the
 object
crashed into the house, Nelson said is definitely was not a rock
 thrown
 at the window.

That's when I found the hole in the
 mini-blinds
 and the broken window.

We were just lucky no one was sitting at the computer when it
 happened.

In addition to breaking through the window, the possible meteorite hit
the computer desk putting a hole through the particle board.

Nelson said the last confirmed meteorite to hit Bloomington was in the
 1930s.

Meteorite second to hit Bloomington
By Roger Miller
Pantagraph (Bloomington, Illinois
March 5, 2007

BLOOMINGTON - A piece of the sky has fallen on Bloomington before.

On a summer night in 1938, the Rev. Luther Cox and his family were
listening to the radio at their home at 301 Howard St., according to an
account on the Web site of Meteoritical Society, an international group
dedicated to studying meteorites and planetary sciences. Between 9 and
10 p.m., they heard a noise on the back porch.

The next morning, Cox found a rock that had split in two on impact. The
two pieces weighed a total of about 2.3 ounces.

His young son, Henry, placed the two pieces in his rock collection. In
later years, the son, then grown up and a minister himself, exhibited
the pieces at numerous summer camps as a possible meteorite.

He had the rock analyzed in 1973 by an expert at John Deere Planetarium
at Augustana College, Rock Island. He verified it as a stone meteorite.
A piece was sent to Field Museum in Chicago for further study.

[meteorite-list] Asteroid Named After JHU Applied Physics Lab (132524 APL)

2007-03-05 Thread Ron Baalke

http://www.jhu.edu/~gazette/2007/05mar07/05aplroc.html

APL Rocks! Asteroid Named After JHU Applied Physics Lab
By Michael Buckley
Applied Physics Laboratory
March 5, 2007 | Vol. 36 No. 24

The lab that landed the first spacecraft on an asteroid now has its name
on one of the sun-orbiting space rocks.

Lauding the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory's
leading role in several planetary missions, the International Astronomical
Union approved the name 132524 APL for the provisionally tagged 2002 JF56,
a small main-belt asteroid just beyond Mars' orbit. The Pluto-bound,
APL-built New Horizons spacecraft zipped past the asteroid last June, and
with some fast planning and programming from operators at APL and other
institutions, was able to photograph the 2-mile-wide asteroid while testing
its abilities to track moving objects.

New Horizons principal investigator Alan Stern, of the Southwest
Research Institute in Boulder, Colo., proposed the name to the IAU.
It's nice to see APL get its name enshrined in space, Stern says. It
was long overdue.

Dated Jan. 6, the IAU citation announcing the name identifies APL as the
developer of numerous space missions such as NEAR to asteroid Eros,
MESSENGER to Mercury and New Horizons to Pluto and the Kuiper Belt. APL
made space history in 2000-2001 with NEAR, or Near Earth Asteroid
Rendezvous, which was the first spacecraft to orbit and then land on an
asteroid.

Walt Faulconer, APL's Civilian Space Business Area executive, said, As
the organization that first landed a spacecraft on an asteroid on behalf
of NASA, it's fitting recognition to now have an asteroid named APL.
It's also exciting that it's an asteroid we saw with our New Horizons
spacecraft on its journey to Pluto. We'll have to plan a mission to
'APL' someday.

Asteroid APL was discovered in May 2002 by the Lincoln Laboratory
Near-Earth Asteroid Research Team at Socorro, N.M. To track its path in
space, go to: http://neo.jpl.nasa.gov/cgi-bin/db_shm?des=132524 .

[meteorite-list] NASA Can't Pay For Killer Asteroid Hunt

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20070305/ap_on_sc/killer_asteroids;_ylt=ApVHfDEiKSEMivb7S4Ub7TRvieAA

NASA can't pay for killer asteroid hunt
By SETH BORENSTEIN
Associated Press
March 5, 2007

WASHINGTON - NASA officials say the space agency is capable of finding
nearly all the asteroids that might pose a devastating hit to Earth,
but there isn't enough money to pay for the task so it won't get done.

The cost to find at least 90 percent of the 20,000 potentially hazardous
asteroids and comets by 2020 would be about $1 billion, according to a
report NASA will release later this week. The report was previewed
Monday at a Planetary Defense Conference in Washington.

Congress in 2005 asked NASA to come up with a plan to track most killer
asteroids and propose how to deflect the potentially catastrophic ones.

We know what to do, we just don't have the money, said Simon Pete
Worden, director of NASA's Ames Research Center.

These are asteroids that are bigger than 460 feet in diameter - slightly
smaller than the Superdome in New Orleans. They are a threat even if
they don't hit Earth because if they explode while close enough - an
event caused by heating in both the rock and the atmosphere - the
devastation from the shockwaves is still immense. The explosion alone
could have with the power of 100 million tons of dynamite, enough to
devastate an entire state, such as Maryland, they said.

The agency is already tracking bigger objects, at least 3,300 feet in
diameter, that could wipe out most life on Earth, much like what is
theorized to have happened to dinosaurs 65 million years ago. But even
that search, which has spotted 769 asteroids and comets - none of which
is on course to hit Earth - is behind schedule. It's supposed to be
complete by the end of next year.

NASA needs to do more to locate other smaller, but still potentially
dangerous space bodies. While an Italian observatory is doing some work,
the United States is the only government with an asteroid-tracking
program, NASA said.

One solution would be to build a new ground telescope solely for the
asteroid hunt, and piggyback that use with other agencies' telescopes
for a total of $800 million. Another would be to launch a space infrared
telescope that could do the job faster for $1.1 billion. But NASA
program scientist Lindley Johnson said NASA and the White House called
both those choices too costly.

A cheaper option would be to simply piggyback on other agencies'
telescopes, a cost of about $300 million, also rejected, Johnson said.

The decision of the agency is we just can't do anything about it right
now, he added.

Earth got a scare in 2004, when initial readings suggested an 885-foot
asteroid called 99942 Apophis seemed to have a chance of hitting Earth
in 2029. But more observations showed that wouldn't happen. Scientists
say there is a 1-in-45,000 chance that it could hit in 2036.

They think it would mostly likely strike the Pacific Ocean, which would
cause a tsunami on the U.S. West Coast the size of the devastating 2004
Indian Ocean wave.

John Logsdon, space policy director at George Washington University,
said a stepped-up search for such asteroids is needed.

You can't deflect them if you can't find them, Logsdon said. And we
can't find things that can cause massive damage.

page is
full of links to Meteorite-Times Magazine. We posted to the list that
we were
changing the URL but I don't remember if I included for everyone to
change their

Please update any bookmarks or links on your pages to

Time came to renew the old url and we did not see the need to spend the
money
on the old URL. Our March issue will be out around the 10th and we are
starting
to format it now.

We are also starting to embed meteorite videos from YouTube and Google
as can be
seen on the following URL. Please forward the URL of any YouTube or

like us to include to me off the list.

Thank you and sorry for any confusion,
