[meteorite-list] Tokyo Mineral Show This Week Dec 13-17 over 300 tables

2007-12-09 Thread drtanuki
Hello List,
This week the 16th annual Tokyo Mineral Show will be
held in Ikebukuro, Tokyo, Japan at The Sunshine City,
Bunka Kaikan 2F from December 13-17.
This event is the largest mineral show in Asia. Out
of the 300 or so dealers there will be at least five
selling meteorites including Mike Farmer, Hans Koser,
Eisler, and Bruno and Carine. Many new meteorites
will be offered that have not been offered in Europe
or the US.
Also at the show there are tons of minerals, fossils
and others.
This year will be a very interesting show as always.

Re: [meteorite-list] Meteorite-list Digest, Vol 49, Issue 16

2007-12-09 Thread Doug Smith
I am very new at the study/collecting of meteorites and what I know about
the subject is mostly from Norton's _Rocks from Space_. I often feel at a
loss when I read discussions that assume terms I do not understand. One,
for example, is the use of 'new' and 'old' with regard to Campo. Is this a
reference to a different find from a different body or a newly available
group that appears to be less weathered than some I've seen?

More to the point, I'd love to hear a recommendation for a reference that
would help answer such pedestrian questions without bothering the
professionals that seem to make up the population of this list. I see a lot
of negative tone in posts here and would be happy to leave in favor of a
lower level (beginner friendly) list if such exists. At my level, I am
seeking help understanding what I see on meteorites and read in ads or
posts. For example: looking at the picture linked below, what should I be
able to say about the subject other than it is a Sikhote-Alin?

http://www.pbase.com/dougsmit/image/89764842

My first interest in meteorites several years ago suggests some different
looking things are being sold today than just a few years ago. I wonder if
this is different cleaning, new finds (dug as opposed to surface) or fakes
in the market. Some of this may be the likes of shattering big irons into
more saleable pieces (Campo, in particular) but there seems to be a lot of
things out there that a reading of Norton does not cover. If anyone on this
list has any interest in either of the subjects were I am more comfortable
(links below), I would be happy to trade information for lessons in
'Meteorites 101'.

[meteorite-list] AD: Canyon Diablo Graphite Slices / Mali / Uruacu Whole Sale Lot

2007-12-09 Thread David Kitt Deyarmin

I have a lot to offer to the list this week

If you're interested in anything listed below please contact me off list at
bobadebt at ec.rr.com

The pictures I uploaded are of entire groups, if you would like more
detailed images of the item your interested in let me know in your email.

Thanks

---

First up I have some new Canyon Diablo Graphite Nodule Slices available for
$2.50 per gram

I processed a 360 gram end cut and got 1 large super nice 73 gram slice, 3
medium sized slices and a variety of smaller slices.

You can see the 4 largest slices by clicking this:

http://i131.photobucket.com/albums/p298/BobaDebt/Graphite/Slices1.jpg

You can view all I have to offer by clicking this link and then clicking the
Canyon Diablo Graphite Nodule link

http://home.ec.rr.com/bobadebt/Rocks/FS.htm

---

Next I have an 89 gram assortment on Mali / Erg Chek whole specimens and
fragments available for $3 per gram

I'm selling these for another dealer as part of an agreement to earn his
trust in hopes that he will send me a larger specimen from which I will be
able to make a sphere.

Some of these pieces are about 90% fully crusted

You can view all of them by clicking this:

http://i131.photobucket.com/albums/p298/BobaDebt/Graphite/WS1.jpg

---

Finally I have a 10 piece Uruacu Whole Sale Lot.

It is comprised of 9 normal 3-5mm thick slices and one 15mm thick slice

The total weight of the lot is 339 grams and I'm asking $250 which is 75
cents per gram

Uruacu is more difficult to cut but my process leaves a very smooth surface
so there will be very little work need to sand, polish and etch these

Most are loaded with cohenite-schreibersite inclusions the bottom right
slice had a fissure in it and once it was cut it separated into 2 slices so
one side is cut and the other has a crust like weathered surface.

You can view the lot by clicking this, it's not a good picture but it gives
you an idea of what they look like

Hi Don and All,
sorry about that. I sent the info to Michael for Marc, but a part of
my e-mail was missing.

Here's the text WITH the missing part:

Very likely a Ureilite (too nice to cut!), 321 grams, collection
Marc Jost, Spacejewels, Switzerland

Further info: Found in 2007. Several well known meteorite experts
found evidence for the meteorite to be a Ureilite,

but it is not yet classified!

Cheers, Peter

2007-12-09 Thread Michael L Blood
Hi Steve,
This question can only be properly answered by addressing
It at several levels:
In theory, one that PROVES life on Mars does or did exist.
Of those known to exist, ALH84001 would, of course, be the Holy
Grail of the known Martians.
Of those that are (at least theoretically) available, Chassigny is,
By far, the rarest, making it the Holy Grail of available Martians.
Hope that clears it up, Steve.
Best wishes, Michael

[meteorite-list] Win a meteorite contest: We Have a Winner!

2007-12-09 Thread Eric Wichman

Hi all,

The Win A Meteorite Contest has a WINNER! The winning guess is 36 grams!

The response to the contest was GREAT! Within minutes of launching
the contest I had 4 guesses and they were really close! After well
over 100 guesses later someone has already guessed the weight of the meteorite.

AND THE WINNER IS Steve Eshbaugh in Missouri, USA with a correct
guess of 36 grams!

Congratulations Steve! This 36 gram iron meteorite is an awesome
specimen to add to any meteorite collection. It's a beautiful piece
with a very interesting shape. I hate to let it go but you earned
it. Great job.

Also, I'd like to announce 1 runner up. I wasn't planning on doing
this, but since the response was so great and people were bidding so
many times I thought it only fair to give an extra meteorite away.
How cool is that? This was such great fun and everyone got so very
excited about it, I'm having another contest. This time though, I'm
adding one more rule... ;)

Look for the new contest in the next 24hrs!

Eric

I thought the list might be interested in seeing some pictures from the

They've recently refurbished the Mineral Gallery and there are some

I am very new at the study/collecting of meteorites and what I know about
the subject is mostly from Norton's _Rocks from Space_. I often feel at a
loss when I read discussions that assume terms I do not understand. One,
for example, is the use of 'new' and 'old' with regard to Campo. Is this a
reference to a different find from a different body or a newly available
group that appears to be less weathered than some I've seen?

More to the point, I'd love to hear a recommendation for a reference that
would help answer such pedestrian questions without bothering the
professionals that seem to make up the population of this list. I see a
lot of negative tone in posts here and would be happy to leave in favor of
a lower level (beginner friendly) list if such exists.

I wonder
if this is different cleaning, new finds (dug as opposed to surface) or
fakes in the market. Some of this may be the likes of shattering big
irons into more saleable pieces (Campo, in particular) but there seems to
be a lot of things out there that a reading of Norton does not cover. If
anyone on this list has any interest in either of the subjects were I am
more comfortable (links below), I would be happy to trade information for
lessons in 'Meteorites 101'.

Well, since the term holy grail means something that is difficult to find and
requires time and effort to aquire, then it can't be just any Martian that you
happen to like, and it can't be one that you find for sale regularly on Ebay or
on someone's web site. To fit the actual meaning of the term holy grail, it
would have to be a Martian that turns up only rarely, and in small amounts.
Which is why I said Governador Valadares.

http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/Holy_Grail

noun

1. A distant, all-but-unobtainable ultimate goal of a person or organization.

2. A difficult or near-impossible goal that would prove to be a major benefit
(example: nanotechnology is the holy grail of medicine)

[meteorite-list] Meteorite dates lunar volcanoes *Picture of Kalahari 009*

2007-12-09 Thread Jason Utas
Hello All,
Unsure if this article has already been posted, but it hasn't arrived
in my inbox yet, so here goes.
Article text below; see link for the picture.
Jason
---

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/science/nature/7128000.stm

Meteorite dates lunar volcanoes

Volcanoes were active on the Moon's surface soon after it was formed,
a new study in the journal Nature suggests.
Precision dating of a lunar rock that fell to Earth shows our
satellite must have had lava erupting across its vast plains 4.35
billion years ago.

This is hundreds of millions of years earlier than had been indicated
by the rocks collected by Apollo astronauts.

Scientists say the information will help us better understand the
beginnings of the Solar System.

And they urge future Moon missions to try to obtain more of these most
ancient rocks.

We want to understand how the Solar System formed, how the planets
formed, said Mahesh Anand from the UK's Open University.

The Moon is the only place where you can go to find the first 500
million years of geological history, because these old rocks have been
lost on Earth, he told BBC News.

Botswana fortune

According to the favoured theory, the Moon was created some 4.5
billion years ago in a smash-up between the Earth and a Mars-sized
body.

Material thrown into space is believed to have coalesced to become our
satellite.

Volcanism on this new object would not have started until its surface
had cooled to form a crust and its insides had become separated into a
mantle and a core. Quite when this might have happened has been hard
to pin down.

Virtually none of the basaltic rocks collected by moonwalkers are
older than 3.9 billion years; but with less than 400kg of lunar
material returned to Earth, many scientists suspected Apollo would not
be the last word on the subject.

Now, Dr Anand - working with Dr Kentaro Terada, from Hiroshima
University, Japan, and other colleagues - has put a new date on a
lunar meteorite known as Kalahari 009.

Sometime in the past, this 13.5kg volcanic rock was blasted off the
Moon by the impact of an asteroid or comet and fell to Earth in what
is now Botswana.

Moon knowledge

Scientists know it comes from the Moon because of the type of oxygen
atoms it contains.

And by looking closely at the ratio of uranium and lead atoms in the
rock's phosphate minerals, the team has also been able to say when the
basalt was ejected - 4.35 billion years ago, give or take 150 million
years.

The age of the phosphate is the age of the rock, said Dr Anand,
because the rock solidifies when the magma cools, and when the magma
cools the mineral forms.

Volcanic activity is a secondary process. A planet has first to form,
solidify, and separate into layers; and then there is melting of that
solidified mantle to produce volcanism.

So we are pushing all of this further back in time; and [our
research] suggests these processes took place over a much shorter
timescale than had previously been thought.

New interest

Space agencies have renewed their interest in the Moon three decades
after the Apollo landings.

Europe's recent Smart-1 orbiter has been swiftly followed by Japanese
and Chinese spacecraft.

India will be next; and in the coming decade we should see robots land
on the lunar surface, with astronauts set to return by 2020.

Scientists say the Moon has much to tell us about the early Earth. The
surface rocks on our planet are relatively young because they are
constantly recycled into the interior.

The not-so-dynamic Moon, on the other hand, has an abundance of early
material on its surface. Researchers think it should even harbour
ancient Earth meteorites - rocks that travelled in the opposite
direction to Kalahari 009.

Hi Steve,
This question can only be properly answered by addressing
It at several levels:
In theory, one that PROVES life on Mars does or did exist.
Of those known to exist, ALH84001 would, of course, be the Holy
Grail of the known Martians.
Of those that are (at least theoretically) available, Chassigny is,
By far, the rarest, making it the Holy Grail of available Martians.
Hope that clears it up, Steve.
Best wishes, Michael

[meteorite-list] Win A Meteorite Contest 2.0: First One To Guess it Gets it.

Hi all, again... :)

That was WY too fast! So I'm giving away yet another iron meteorite!

You guys are way too quick in guessing the weight of a meteorite by
the photo. For those of you who participated in the last contest,
Thanks! Now I have to make things a bit more challenging. It's was
too easy too just guess 1-1000 grams and get it just by process of
elimination. So, I decided to make it a bit more interesting by
adding 1 more contest rule.

Win A Meteorite Contest 2.0: First person to guess the correct weight
of this meteorite to the gram wins it!

CONTEST RULES:
Only 3 Guesses Per Person. ;)
Must be exact weight, to the gram.
Contest ends on December 18th at midnight.
All guesses must be received by the expiration date.

That's it! I'll announce the winner on MeteoriteWatch.com! Dealers,
again, you are welcome to guess as well and I'll place a FREE Banner
ad for you too to advertise your business or website. You can't beat that deal.

You only get 3 guesses. Make them count! Post your guess here:

Michael... ALH84001 has certainly caused a lot of discussion over the
years. Proof that life once existed on Mars, yes or no ? I would like to
inform you that NWA 998 is described as containing ankeritic carbonates.
One other meteorite has been described in this manner - ALH84001

ALH84001 is not available to private collectors but NWA 998 is:

Hi Steve,
This question can only be properly answered by addressing
It at several levels:
In theory, one that PROVES life on Mars does or did exist.
Of those known to exist, ALH84001 would, of course, be the Holy
Grail of the known Martians.
Of those that are (at least theoretically) available, Chassigny is,
By far, the rarest, making it the Holy Grail of available Martians.
Hope that clears it up, Steve.
Best wishes, Michael

Hi again list. With all the martain meteorites out

be a good thread to start. While I was at the bank last
week,I was organizing my other collection and I was
wondering what is the holy grail of martains?I have a
 6.3 gram slice of D. A. G. 476 as my only martain.So
it brought the above question.Any comments will be
 excitingly awaited.
