Hi Ben,
Wow, a new Australian lunar! This is the first I've heard about it. I just
checked the Western Australian Museum website, and there is no mention of it
yet. Definitely not paired with Calcalong Creek, based on the find coordinates.
But I guess we won't be seeing any of this new one
Had some fun analyzing Sutter's Mill yesterday on the electron

Outstanding! Way cool chpndrule, and I particularly like the crust...(on
my fragment, the crust is bubbly at 30x, cool to see e-probe pics!)

Hi Mike,
I don't know about the particulars of Australian meteorite laws, but since this
new lunar appears to have been recovered as part of an institutional search
expedition, and with such a low TKW, I doubt the museum will be interested in

Hi Folks,
Well, the fall is over a month old now and it has been officially

until the new finds completely dry up. In the meantime, I thought it

Hi Ben, Doug, and List,
A great new lunar. So, how exactly does that work in Australia? Can
the finder keep it? Is the finder reimbursed if the stone is property
of the government? I know about the export part of the process, but
can an Australian hunter keep his find (or part of it) or must
Jeff,
You mean the area in the SW quadrant? It's permeated with the bright
material? It could be sulfide, but I didn't get a chance to EDS or
probe it yesterday. It's all somewhat bewildering, there is so much
look at, so I am starting with the simple stuff that give good

In Australia, the laws very from state to state. Unfortunately in both
Western Australia and my state, South Australia, the state museums
have automatic guardianship over any meteorite found within the state
boarders. In South Australia, a finder has to be rewarded if they

Hi Mike,
New finds are few and far between.
This is mostly because there are so few people searching right now,
and to a lesser extent that the easiest spots have been covered
fairly well. Despite it being hunted to death, there are still
plenty of meteorites in Marshall Gold Discovery State
Here's the relevant law for South Australia;
http://www.legislation.sa.gov.au/LZ/C/A/SOUTH%20AUSTRALIAN%20MUSEUM%20ACT%201976/CURRENT/1976.21.UN.PDF
It covers any meteorite found on South Australian land, so privet
property is not excluded. The only possible loop hole I could see

Hi Richard,
I haven't seen a thin section of Sutter's Mill yet, but my guess is
that it will be very dark, just like the meteorite, so maybe not that
illuminating. I prefer backscatter electron images because they not
only show texture, but also image chemical compositional variations.
