[meteorite-list] Licking, a meteorite from Missouri

2015-06-28 Thread Ruben Garcia via Meteorite-list
Hi all,

I just purchased a new 8 kilo iron meteorite found near Licking,
Missouri. I wasn't going to say much just yet but since someone
already posted it on FB I figured I'd just post it here too.

On Monday, Dr Laurence Garvie (ASU) will begin classification work on
this medium octahedrite iron.

I'd like to sell it intact but I may cut it and sell slices, not sure.

See it here.

[meteorite-list] differentiated asteroids and stony-iron meteorite

2015-06-28 Thread Francesco Moser via Meteorite-list
Hi all, I have a question about differentiated asteroids and stony-iron
meteorites.

We know that the iron meteorites was originated from the core and the
achondrite from the crust ... and from the mantle? The stony-iron
meteorites, right?
So my question is ... wich class of stony-iron meteorite was originated from
the mantle?
I guess the pallasites ... and what about mesosiderites?

Thanks

x
Francesco

[meteorite-list] Changes In 14C and Impacts

2015-06-28 Thread E.P. Grondine via Meteorite-list
Hi Paul -

Thanks for the link to that paper.

I am looking forward to your comments on the Kiscoty structure.

My guess is that the depth of the ice sheet may be estimated from the height of
the rebound, but I am incapable of performing detailed calculations from any
formula you may know of.

My working assumption is that nearly all of the energy released from the
initial blast went into different processes which melted the ice sheet - such
as the infra-red, the boiling water returning to Earth, the hot impact dust
returning, etc.

[meteorite-list] Does anyone buy entire meteorite colletions?

2015-06-28 Thread Don Merchant via Meteorite-list
Just curious List...I have seen a few web sites of Dealers stating that they
buy meteorite and or meteorite collections. I guess my question is do they
really buy entire meteorite collections? I have conferred with a few Dealers
a few years back who have posted on their web sites that they do, but when
asked, they then say that they don't! Maybe that statement should be removed
from their web site, I guess.

*
I know that before the end of this year 2015, I will be selling my entire
meteorite collection (meteorites only), then later I will be selling all my
meteorite coins, stamps, postcards and other meteorite related items. I get
the feeling that this will be more difficult then I anticipated even though
my collection has been meticulously documented and preserved.

*
With that said has anyone bought or sold entire meteorite collections and if
so are there any hints, tips and or advice that can be recommended?

[meteorite-list] Does anyone buy entire meteorite colletions?

2015-06-28 Thread Shawn Alan via Meteorite-list
Hello Listers and Don

From my understanding there are few dealers that will buy whole
collections, it depends on the price and what you have. Now if your
looking to sell fast that's the best way to go, but your going to loose
a lot in what you paid on your collection. Lets say you spent 100,000
and if I was a dealer I would offer you 15,000 to start the offering and
I wouldn't go higher than 20,000 to 25,000. But again, that depends on
the collection. I would suggest this Don, take out the high end ticket
items and sell them alone and group different meteorites and sell those
as a whole LOTS. This way you can save some time on selling your
collection and also get a good return.

After your done selling off your collection, will you still be
collecting meteorites and using the money earned to buy a different
collection? If that's the case, I would do trades cause it can be a win
win for both parties on some of the meteorites you have.

Re: [meteorite-list] Does anyone buy entire meteorite colletions?

2015-06-28 Thread Ruben Garcia via Meteorite-list
Hi Don,

I know several dealers that purchase meteorite collections.
Personally, I have purchased one or two within the last year and am
always looking to buy more. However, remember that meteorites are not
selling as well as they did in the past, therefore, a dealer can't
overpay. If you have realistic wholesale prices - as would need to be
the case - I am interested. Remember that I make a living buying and
selling meteorites so there would need to be sufficient meat on the
bone to make it worth my investment and time.

Having said that, if someone contacts me with a collection but wants
retail prices - or close to it - I usually won't offend them by
sending a lower offer.

Five years ago Martian and Lunar meteorites were expensive. Today I
can sell them for $125 Martian or $190 Lunar per gram, meaning - in
bulk from the finder they are pretty inexpensive. So, if you have that
type of material in your collection purchased five to ten years ago
you would probably have paid $300 - $700 per gram at least, and you'd
lose money reselling today. Meanwhile rare falls would likely have
increased in value.

Just my thoughts...

I have bought many collections. There is no right or wrong answer. Markets
change, prices rise or fall. Send me a list.
I've offered to buy back endless meteorites for even 10 times what I sold
them for. Of course that doesn't apply to most things but some it sure
does.

Hmm... interesting topic.
I started out somewhat slowly, but soon went overboard with new
acquisitions. For me, anyway. I've begun to thin out my collection a bit,
but I'm certainly not ready to give it all up yet. Still, I need to strike a
reasonable balance. I want to retain a respectable collection, but I don't
want to leave my wife a big problem when I'm gone.
For the same reasons, I've begun to sell off some of my excess astronomy
equipment. And there's certainly some 'excess' there!

Stuff. You can't take it with you!

Dear Ed:

I am looking forward to your comments on the Kiscoty structure.

At this time, I lack any comments about the Kiscoty structure.
The problem is that the only material that I have been able to
find about is a newspaper article that lacks any coordinates
and has only a medium to small scale map with terrible
resolution and lacking any mark as to where this feature is in
the map. Given, the scale and resolution of the the article’s
map, it is impossible discern what in this map is the “Kiscoty
structure” and exactly where it is located. I would need a
specific location, preferably a latitude and longitude, of some
sort for its center and what its diameter or radius is to be
able to comment on the Kiscoty structure.

By the way and off topic, in both 1394 BP and 1450 BP,
tsunamis devastated northern coast of Aceh, northern
Sumatra, as discussed in a fascinating Open Access
paper:

Re: [meteorite-list] Does anyone buy entire meteorite colletions?

2015-06-28 Thread Michael Farmer via Meteorite-list
I have bought many collections. There is no right or wrong answer. Markets
change, prices rise or fall. Send me a list.
I've offered to buy back endless meteorites for even 10 times what I sold them
for. Of course that doesn't apply to most things but some it sure does.

With that said has anyone bought or sold entire meteorite collections and if
so are there any hints, tips and or advice that can be recommended?

 Sincerely
