[meteorite-list] Licking, a meteorite from Missouri
Hi all, I just purchased a new 8 kilo iron meteorite found near Licking, Missouri. I wasn't going to say much just yet but since someone already posted it on FB I figured I'd just post it here too. On Monday, Dr Laurence Garvie (ASU) will begin classification work on this medium octahedrite iron. I'd like to sell it intact but I may cut it and sell slices, not sure. [meteorite-list] differentiated asteroids and stony-iron meteorite
Hi all, I have a question about differentiated asteroids and stony-iron meteorites. We know that the iron meteorites was originated from the core and the achondrite from the crust ... and from the mantle? The stony-iron meteorites, right? So my question is ... wich class of stony-iron meteorite was originated from the mantle? I guess the pallasites ... and what about mesosiderites? [meteorite-list] Changes In 14C and Impacts
Hi Paul - Thanks for the link to that paper. I am looking forward to your comments on the Kiscoty structure. My guess is that the depth of the ice sheet may be estimated from the height of the rebound, but I am incapable of performing detailed calculations from any formula you may know of. My working assumption is that nearly all of the energy released from the initial blast went into different processes which melted the ice sheet - such as the infra-red, the boiling water returning to Earth, the hot impact dust returning, etc. E.P. [meteorite-list] Does anyone buy entire meteorite colletions?
Hello Listers and Don From my understanding there are few dealers that will buy whole collections, it depends on the price and what you have. Now if your looking to sell fast that's the best way to go, but your going to loose a lot in what you paid on your collection. Lets say you spent 100,000 and if I was a dealer I would offer you 15,000 to start the offering and I wouldn't go higher than 20,000 to 25,000. But again, that depends on the collection. I would suggest this Don, take out the high end ticket items and sell them alone and group different meteorites and sell those as a whole LOTS. This way you can save some time on selling your collection and also get a good return. After your done selling off your collection, will you still be collecting meteorites and using the money earned to buy a different collection? If that's the case, I would do trades cause it can be a win win for both parties on some of the meteorites you have. Re: [meteorite-list] Does anyone buy entire meteorite colletions?
Hi Don, I know several dealers that purchase meteorite collections. Personally, I have purchased one or two within the last year and am always looking to buy more. However, remember that meteorites are not selling as well as they did in the past, therefore, a dealer can't overpay. If you have realistic wholesale prices - as would need to be the case - I am interested. Remember that I make a living buying and selling meteorites so there would need to be sufficient meat on the bone to make it worth my investment and time. Having said that, if someone contacts me with a collection but wants retail prices - or close to it - I usually won't offend them by sending a lower offer. Five years ago Martian and Lunar meteorites were expensive. Today I can sell them for $125 Martian or $190 Lunar per gram, meaning - in bulk from the finder they are pretty inexpensive. So, if you have that type of material in your collection purchased five to ten years ago you would probably have paid $300 - $700 per gram at least, and you'd lose money reselling today. Meanwhile rare falls would likely have increased in value. Just my thoughts... Hmm... interesting topic. I started out somewhat slowly, but soon went overboard with new acquisitions. For me, anyway. I've begun to thin out my collection a bit, but I'm certainly not ready to give it all up yet. Still, I need to strike a reasonable balance. I want to retain a respectable collection, but I don't want to leave my wife a big problem when I'm gone. For the same reasons, I've begun to sell off some of my excess astronomy equipment. And there's certainly some 'excess' there! Stuff. You can't take it with you!
