Jeff K. - It doesn't actually say it's a meteorite. No, it doesn't say it's ANYTHING. But when it's "guaranteed to be authentic", and the only specific substance mentioned anywhere is "meteorite".and that's in the title.what is the novice buyer supposed to infer? Why would any seller mention IMCA membership if he's not wishing to suggest authenticity of a meteorite? Would he mention the IMCA if he were selling a tennis racket? I confess I find it difficult to give this seller the benefit of the doubt, as to motives for the eyebrow-raising text. Gregory

I have to agree, I looked at the auction, NOWHERE does it say that it is a meteorite. It describes the material accurately, and says that it looks like a meteorite. Re: [meteorite-list] Metorites and magnetic displays
Hi List, I have wondered if the magnetic holders are a good idea or not. I don't like or permit people to put magnets on my for sale specimens because some researchers do magnetic field tests on specimens (these are very very mild fields that show orientation of the specimen). I don't know of all the scientific value of these magnetic field tests but placing a powerful magnet on any meteorite would ruin the specimen for this type of test. I am not putting the sellers of these holders down (pretty innovative) but specimens should be kept in their natural states without any sort of outside influences if they are to be studied in the future. All my best. --AL __ Meteorite-list mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://www.pairlist.net/mailman/listinfo/meteorite-list

Re: [meteorite-list] IMCA member offering questionable meteorite
Dear list, I agree with John that this is not a case of an IMCA member trying to sell a meteorwrong as a meteorite. He calls it an iron rock and meteorite-looking, and if I were a bidder I would not believe I was bidding on a meteorite, To protect those who might believe they were bidding on a meteorite, however, it would have been better if he stated clearly this is not a meteorite. But, if one wishes to question the practices of an IMCA member, consider the following auctions. Here is an auction for a 1.12g slice of Shirokovsky which ended in April, before it was official that Shirokovsky was not a meteorite. In this auction the seller identifies himself by IMCA number: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItemitem=2171620619 Sometime later, the seller ran an auction for a 0.64g slice of Shirokovsky. Although official word had not yet come down on this material, I wrote to the seller and told him it was not looking good for this material being meteoritic He replied that he would look into it and he cancelled the auction. I was therefore surprised when he ran the auction again, this time to a conclusion: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItemitem=2176968147 Note that in this auction, he does not mention the IMCA at all, even though he is still listed as a member, and he states the material is a pallasite. Further, he states that he is selling as is, which tells me this IMCA member knew exactly what he was doing: selling a meteorwrong as a meteorite. The winner of the auction also left feedback indicating that he loved his meteorite specimen! If this sounds familiar, I did point out this questionable auction to the list a few weeks back. The reason I am bringing it up now is that this IMCA member seems clearly to have pulled a fast one with the buyer being none the wiser, whereas the IMCA member selling the iron rock from Maryland does not seem to be, in my mind at least, anywhere near as deceptive in what he's doing. [meteorite-list] Price of Odessa
Hi All, I was hoping some of you - or at least one of you would know what the per Lb price of Odessa should be on a multi pound specimen of good (neither fabulous nor poor) character/form. http://www.thomascave.com/Meteorites/Charts/splitstonelist.htm has it listed at .40 - 1.81 per GRAM - but, surely, this is not for multiple kg sized specimens? The last time I was in Odessa, a couple of old dudes had garages full of specimens at $65/Lb - but that was a bunch of years ago. Anyone know the status these days of this material? Re: [meteorite-list] Final eBay list
Hello List, I have an idea! Have you ever got one of those emails that say add your name to the this list and forward it to your friends. We can do that with this list, and save Michael a big head ache! I thought about adding our IMCA #'s to it. Re: [meteorite-list] Alabama Superbolide of Dec.5, 1999 --Coldwater,AL?
I recall doing some preliminary work on a bolide tracked by DOD which should have terminated in the vicinity of Coldwater(?) Alabama (East of Montgomery) about that time. To my knowledge no one ever reported searching even though discussed widly on the list. The track data was pretty good and the angle steep. I believe the initial ground plot discussed was 5-8 kilometers wide by 8-10 long over an undeveloped tract of land southwest of a state roadway. This one may have been marked by a flash on a secuirty camera. Incidentally New Holland PA, in 1995(?) is another promising DOD track which wasn't (reported to have been) followed up. I am too many hard drive crashes later to lay my hands on exact references. [meteorite-list] AD-Cortec VCI Emitters For Sale
Hi List, I recently purchased a case of Cortec VCI-101 emitters, but I don't have a use for all of them. So, with that said, I am offering the remaining emitters to the list at actual cost. Each foam emitter is 3 inch long x 1.25 inch wide x 1/4 inch thick and protects 1 cubic foot of space for up to 2 years. Again, I am offering these at the price that I paid for them, which is $2.45 ea. plus $.37 postage in the U.S. only. I only have about 30 of these remaining, so if you are interested please contact me via private email. Re: [meteorite-list] DOD Satellites Detect March 2003 Bolide Over Park Forest
In a message dated 7/8/2003 11:47:37 PM Central Daylight Time, [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes: Farmer wrote. We are not talking a very far off course. The smaller stones seem to be less than a quarter to half mile to the east, that is nothing when something is falling from space. Steger is just on the other side of the road from Park Forest, not really like out west here where one town is 30 or 40 miles to the next. To me this strewnfield looks absolutely perfect, if not just a tad scewed like (I think) by the wind. Hello Mike and List, Sorry for joining this conversation late as I was out the last few days. At this point I am still reluctant to share too much information as I still have Park Forest specimens to sell and I am convinced many more little ones are out there waiting to be picked and compete with mine in the market place. However, I will say, after picking up 113 specimens and probably spending 30% of my time (of the 44 days I hunted) looking outside of the strewnfield area on my map, these things are very uniformly distributed (with one little exception - all the oriented specimens landed with significantly smaller sized stones) from sub gram pieces roughly in the Southeast and the big 5kg one roughly to the Northwest. And this field goes MUCH further southeast than most people realize. Much more than the 1/4 to 1/2 mile that Mike mentioned above. Also the further Southeast I got the more dramatic the reports were of the noise, light and shaking when the rocks came in. I do not think any meteorites fell in Beecher. Reports from one person said multiple pieces hit their window and or roof top. I think not. Maybe the sonic boom(s) shook the windows and roof, but if "many" pieces could land on just one roof, or hit just one window, we should have tens of thousands if not hundreds of thousand of small specimen in and around Beecher. I did not find any near Beecher. I don't think anyone else did either. Slag yes, meteorites no. Within my strewnfield map area, I would find pieces in a fairly constant spacing from each other with a few anomalies of two pieces being found just feet from each other. Once I would venture out too far in any direction, (one never knows how far is too far until he tries) I would not find anything in 10 times the area I would find a specimen back inside the zone, possibly only a few hundred or thousand feet away. Of course there could be more outside of my mapped area, but statically we are looking at about 200 specimens total now and NONE of them are significantly out of place. I mean if just one specimen was found anywhere to the Southwest or the Northeast of all 200 others, that might make me think it was transported, but it would offer a hint of a possibility of a SW to NE fall. But there is not one such find. There were many cars and buildings hit with rocks laying in the street. If there were any significantly to the SW wouldn't one have been found? And if there was such a low break up, then the wind would have to be blowing like 500 miles an hour to scoot those specimens miles to the East with rocks indeed going in under roof eves and hitting windows. As I mentioned before in another post, this is a very normal elliptical strewnfield. The only thing that would make it perfect would be a 50kg stone found a mile or two further Northwest of where the other big ones have been found. Even with the possibility of a reverse strewnfield, that would need to place the fireball coming in from the NW going SE. Match that up with the eye witness accounts that Steve Witt mentioned, and I would have to say that there is an error in the report. I know, it is totally impossible for some people to think that anyone who works for the government could ever be wrong about anything. Humm... maybe this is a conspiracy by the Federal Government to throw us all of the track of the real main mass waiting to be located... Oh, on another subject, Noe Garza's 911 call came into the Park Forest Police Department at 11:56pm of the 26th. Maybe the dispatcher's clock might have been off by a few seconds or possibly a minute, but even with a little variation, I am now convinced that the fall distinctively was on the 26th. It would be interesting to know if Garza could account for how long it took for the rock to hit his house and then for him to actually make the call. It is still looking like a 3 minute plus free fall after burn out before impact. Steve Arnold
