[meteorite-list] Best Wishes to Joel

2005-11-07 Thread Jeff Kuyken
Hi List,

Today I received the latest issue of Meteorite Magazine and a note enclosed
mentioning it will be the last one. I was saddened to hear that Joel has be
seriously ill since August and is unable to continue the magazine. It's a
real testimonial to Joel's character that he persevered to get this current
issue out.

So I would like to extend my best wishes to Joel and the family and wish him
a speedy recovery. Joel has contributed so much to world of meteorites over
the years and it would be great if we could all give something back and let
him know we are thinking of him and the family through this difficult time.

Best wishes,

RE: [meteorite-list] Questions regarding Unclassified meteorite sales

2005-11-07 Thread mark ford

No Dealers collecting the rocks = few rocks to study = tiny meteorite
research budget = no meteorite scientist jobs.

Simplifying :

(Rocks to study /10) is better than (rocks to study=0)

So before those of you call it 'NWA raping', bear in mind that the whole
field of meteoritics depends on trades, exchange of material and
amateurs spending thousands of $$ and hours searching the far reaches of
the planet, so the scientists can spend most of their research budgets
on analysing rather than collecting

Hi Jeff,

aren't among all those meteorite enthusiasts any to be found, who have some
experiences in editing to continue the magazine?
I mean in our digital times it can be done from everywhere on the globe. The
format of the textes and pictures are known, the publishing company and
their conditions too, and only a person would have to be found there to send
the magazine around.
(hmm, we know somebody, who recently moved to New Zealand and has
experiences in sending thousands and thousand of parcels...).

Just thoughts..

[meteorite-list] SALE ONLY 5 CENTS A GRAM

2005-11-07 Thread dean bessey
I have several hundred kilos of lower grade leftovers
that are mostly smaller that I can liquidate cheap.
I doubt that you will ever see meteorites this cheap
again. I have a much harder time buying meteorites
nowadays and they wont last forever.
Just look at NWA869. It seemed to be everywhere and
now you cant buy it anymore. And some people dont even
realize that its all gone now. Just a week or two ago
somebody even commented that it was selling for 8
cents on ebay. Thats because some people trying to be
dealers with small amounts dont realize that its all
hunted out and that they are selling it cheaper than
the cost in morocco now.
And this cheap lower grade stuff that I have wont last
forever either but with 1000 kilos dumped on the
market all at once just before munich prices got
suppressed.
So this lower grade stuff is 5 cents a gram minimun 2
kilos plus Shipping from munich Germany. I dont know
the cost for shipping yet but it seems to be about 20
a kilo for airmail.
Email me with orders and I need paypal payments. They
will be sent in a couple days but if somebody wants a
couple hundred kilos I can send airfreight or you can
alway arrange your own shipping.
Sincerely
DEAN

The second would be these new meteorite with an approx weight of 360-400 Kg.
Note: The german Bitburg meteorite was1,5 ton, buta considerable parthas been melt 150-200 years ago and this meteorite is now very rare.

[meteorite-list] NASA Dawn Asteroid Mission Told To 'Stand Down'

2005-11-07 Thread Ron Baalke

http://www.space.com/missionlaunches/051107_dawn_qown.html

NASA Dawn Asteroid Mission Told To 'Stand Down'
By Leonard David
space.com
07 November 2005

A NASA mission to two of the largest asteroids in the solar system being
readied for liftoff next year has been placed in stand down mode.

The ion-engine propelled Dawn mission is dedicated to investigating the
two most massive asteroids known: Vesta and Ceres. These two baby
planets are very different from each other yet both offer tantalizing
clues about the formation of the solar system. Dawn is designed to
improve scientific understanding of how planets formed during the
earliest epoch of the solar system.

Dawn has been on NASA's books for liftoff in mid-June 2006.

The decision to stand down, according to SPACE.com sources, appears
related to budget-related measures and workforce cutbacks at the Jet
Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) in Pasadena, California.

Extremely robust mission

Yes...NASA has asked us to stand down, said Dawn's principal
investigator, Christopher Russell of the University of California, Los
Angeles (UCLA). None of us take this as any indication that they [NASA
Headquarters] do not want to launch Dawn, he told SPACE.com, given
strong words of support from space agency personnel in Washington, D.C.

Russell said that Dawn is an extremely robust mission. The particular
launch opportunity that the spacecraft mission is heading for is
extremely long - over a year long, he noted.

This is both a blessing and a curse, Russell said. Typically a
planetary mission heading to a launch opportunity has a very limited
time for any delays. In this case, we can tolerate delay in launch
without science impact, and so when someone wishes to review an issue to
gain more confidence that it is completely resolved then it may result
in increased expenditures but not loss of the mission, he added.

Russell said that there are a number of technical issues that on a
chemical launch would be examined in parallel to development, but in
this case we were asked to stand down while an independent assessment
team reports back to headquarters. This has interrupted the final
preparations for launch and we wish that they had not done this, but it
is something we can tolerate.

Econo-class mission

Dawn is a NASA Discovery-class mission, selected in December 2001. The
goal of the Discovery program is to launch many smaller missions with
fast development times, each for a fraction of the cost of NASA's larger
missions. Such spacecraft missions are designed to tackle important
questions in science yet do it for a very modest cost.

Dawn is managed by JPL with Orbital Sciences Corporation of Dulles,
Virginia developing the spacecraft.

Earlier this year, the Dawn spacecraft began Assembly, Test and Launch
Operations (ATLO). Spacecraft integration and testing of Dawn has been
progressing very well, according to Tom Fraschetti, JPL's Dawn Project
Manager in a status update last month that was posted on the Dawn
project website.

Ceres, the mini planet

The importance of spacecraft exploration of Ceres, for instance, was
recently underscored by astronomical study of the object.

In September it was announced that observations of Ceres made by NASA's
Hubble Space Telescope revealed that the object may be a mini
planet - perhaps loaded with large amounts of pure water ice beneath its
surface.

Ceres is an embryonic planet, noted Lucy McFadden of the Department of
Astronomy at the University of Maryland in College Park, Maryland. She
is a member of the team that made the Hubble observations, and is also a
member of the science team on the Dawn mission.

Gravitational perturbations from Jupiter billions of years ago
prevented Ceres from accreting more material to become a full-fledged
planet, McFadden explained in a press release announcing the
observations, issued by the Space Telescope Science Institute in
Baltimore, Maryland.

From the magnet I think that this could be an H and the surface let me think

about a 3 or 4.
As you can see there are a lot of condrule.
What could be for you?? H3 H4 or L ?? (remember: it is very magnetic)
I think you will say that this is nothing special but for me is a pretty
chondrule conglomerate :-)

If anyone are interested in a slice for cheap price e-mail me privately.

Ciao and thanks

Bravo Francesco !
This is proof what I alvays say. Every stone must be cut not matter how ugly
it is.
In that way I find my 2 little and pretty L3 and one L3-6 chaotic breccia
and ofcourse 22kg L6 IMB that from outside looks like piece of s**, but
inside fresh rare material.
Verry rare and beautifull H/L3-4 NWA1955 from outside looks like Dean's
Munich cheap material. You will never say that this ugly shale with soo many
cracks can me soo rare and beautifull inside.

Re: [meteorite-list] Best Wishes to Joel

2005-11-07 Thread Robert Woolard
Joel,

I want to join in with those who have recognized you
for the fine job and the hard work you put into making
Meteorite such a joy to read. If this truly is the
last issue, this fine magazine is going to be sorely
missed by all.

More importantly though, I want to add my wishes for
a speedy recovery from whatever condition you are
dealing with. Though I have never had the pleasure of
meeting you in person, I have enjoyed the numerous
emails we have exchanged. I was always amazed at the
patience you had with me and all my many questions in
regard to the two articles you honored me by
publishing in Meteorite.

Heartfelt and complete best wishes to you and your
family.

  Sincerely,

Re: [meteorite-list] Bubbly meteorite

2005-11-07 Thread Göran Axelsson
My guess is that iron hydroxides (rust, limonite) have cemented small
grains of quartz sand to the surface. I've seen it plenty of times in
sulphide bearing rocks that's been weathered for a while.
If the meteorite is an inch across then the biggest grains is 0.7 mm in
size, quite common for sand.

... but then I might be wrong.

them. The meteorite is around an inch across. Do you see this often?

[meteorite-list] Meteorite Magazine

2005-11-07 Thread Notkin

Dear Friends and Listees:

I have been in frequent contact with Joel's wife, Christine Schiff, and
she tells me that Joel's condition is serious but that he will get
better.

I began writing for Meteorite in 1998 and had the great good fortune
to become closely involved with it over the succeeding years. As many
of you know, I wrote regular feature articles, news stories, book
reviews, designed ads for a number of you good people, and worked with
Joel on re-designing the magazine's logo and cover back in 2000 (the
first issue with the new look was Feburary, 2001). As I said in an
interview with Paul and Jim of Meteorite Times, my professional
relationship with the magazine remains one of the most satisfying
aspects of my life.

Having worked in some form of publishing pretty much non-stop since I
was a teenager, I know what a Herculean effort it is to produce, at
home, with a limited budget, a magazine of such quality. Just getting
the thing out on time every three months was a massive accomplishment,
but Joel, Christine, Aaron, and their associate editors and supporters
also maintained an extremely high level of accuracy and integrity --
not to mention the translations, subscriptions, mailings, etc. It's a
mammoth task and I salute the Schiff family and friends for making that
magazine so well and for so long. That kind of sustained effort really
takes a lot out of you, and now that publication has ceased, it's time
for Joel and family to enjoy lots of free time with the knowledge of a
job well done.

I should point out that neither Joel nor Christine are on the Meteorite
List, so they may not yet have seen your kind posts of support. I will
personally forward every one of those posts to Christine, as well as
any others that may be forthcoming. I gather Joel is not up to
answering email at the moment, so it might be best to post your thought
to the List, rather than send them to him personally.

I'm sure you will all join me in sending Joel our most sincere wishes
for a rapid recovery.

Sincerely,

Geoff N.

[meteorite-list] A Thank You for Joel Schiff, Important

2005-11-07 Thread Notkin

Dear Listees:

I sent a BCC of that last post to Christine. This one is just for the
List.

I think we all care deeply about Joel's health and I would like to send
him a substantial gift from the community as a thank you for eleven
years of hard work. I propose that a collection be made and the
proceeds used to purchase a very special meteorite as a gift to Joel
from all of us. Anyone who would like to discuss how we could best
accomplish this, please write to me off-List.

I am open to any suggestions, and would like to see this happen sooner
rather than later.

Any dealers who might have something special that they'd be willing to
make available at a favorable price, please write to me too.

Thanks,

Geoff N.

[meteorite-list] Message From Christine Schiff

2005-11-07 Thread Notkin

MESSAGE FROM CHRISTINE:

Messages of tribute to Joel are arriving as people learn of his
illness. I began to read them out to him, but he became quite
distressed, as giving up Meteorite magazine was a very hard thing for
him to do. So I am printing them all out for him to read later.

There are so many people to thank. If I began to name each of them, I'd
be typing To Africa as they say! Each issue of Meteorite magazine,
and there were 44 of them, couldn't have been produced without the
enormous support of each and everyone of them. Joel knew by heart every
name on the subscriber list. We started out 11 years ago with about
240, and ended up with 1,500. Many of the originals stayed with us for
the whole 11 years. Our advertisers stayed constant, and without their
support we couldn't have produced the magazine.

All of you Joel regarded as his friends, and he frequently said what
wonderful people you all are. Meteorite enthusiasts are a rare breed
indeed.

Amazingly Meteorite magazine was mailed out over the years to
subscribers in 55 different countries!

It was a special experience publishing Meteorite, and we are mighty
proud to have been the conduit for the efforts of so many.

From me personally, a sincere thank you. The good news is that Joel is
slowly getting better each day, it will take a while, but likely it is
being helped by all your kind thoughts.

Kind Regards
Christine Schiff
