[meteorite-list] Attn. Russian dealers - Request for Tsarev

2006-01-24 Thread Dr. Svend Buhl
Hello everybody,

since most of you will be occupied with Tucson preparations I adress this
request mainly to our Russian friends. I'am looking to purchase a Tsarev
sample. Specimen should be a small indivudal (I know those are rarer than the
big ones) or alternatively a crusted endcut in the 150 - 600 gm range - at
moderate price of course.

Beside I'am looking for photos of the find location or of Tsarev meteorites in
situ. I know Roy Gallant visited the site in the 80ies, but maybe one of the
Russian teams has searched the strewfield recently and took some photos of the
current environment.

Thanks for your input off list.

best wishes

Svend

Re: [meteorite-list] Article on Stardust

2006-01-24 Thread Martin Altmann
Yep, because it was discovered by an Swiss astronomer Paul Wild.

For pronouncation I find this online dictionary very helpful (infact the
best for German -- English).
If you click the speaker symbol at the word in your search, you'll hear
it.

I see that they put the proper pronounciation of Wild in the article.
I've
heard some TV reporters pronounce it like the word looks in English, not as
it
looks to those wacky Germans.

It reminds me of something that I heard Tom Brokaw say a few years back.
I'm
sure you've all heard some pronounce the name of Jupiter's moon as eye-oh

some pronounce it as ee-oh. Well, on that newscast, Tom Brokaw pronounced
it
as ten. :-)

[meteorite-list] Meteorite prices and Stardust

2006-01-24 Thread Martin Horejsi
Hi All,

When in Houston last week, the topic came up about which meteorites
might match the comet sample. The usual suspects came were named, with
Orgueil often at the top of the list.

It will be interesting if the sample matches a particular meteorite
since other than the lunar meteorites, we really don't have any ground
truth comparisons. And if the comet sample matches a meteorite, I
suspect demand for that specimen might increase by more than a little,
and others too might go along for the ride.

Cheers,

[meteorite-list] AD - Unclassified Stones and Lots more Ending

2006-01-24 Thread Greg Hupe

Dear List Members,

Later today and tomorrow I have many unclassified Saharan and NWA 869
individuals and 1 kilo Lots ending under my eBay seller name, NaturesVault.
All at very competitive prices and ALL have the Buy it Now feature. There
are also more of the NWA 2932 Mesosiderite large fragments which I have
lowered the price on.

In addition to the above mentioned meteorites, I also have a few pieces, and
remaining Thin Sections, of NWA 2999 Angrite, The Case For Samples From
Mercury. These, too, have the Buy it Now feature.

Then finally there is the only piece of Benguerir I have, a 217 gram
fragment with crust which I have also lowered the price on from last
offering. Here is the link to it:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItemitem=6598512247rd=1sspagename=STRK%3AMESE%3AITrd=1

To see these and all that I have available, click on the above link and then
click on View seller's other items. That, or go to eBay and search for
items by seller, NaturesVault.

For all who have bid on (or are about to bid on) and won items from me, if I
receive payment by Friday the 27th, I can mail out your item(s) before I
leave for the Tucson Show, otherwise I will have to mail them after I return
on February 6th.

For those of you who can not make it to the Tucson Show, I will have a
number of eBay auctions running for 10 days starting Friday the 27th.

Best regards and looking forward to seeing everyone at the show,

Re: [meteorite-list] New Stardust Images

2006-01-24 Thread Ron Baalke

 I like this picture here:

 http://www.nasa.gov/images/content/141248main_jsc2006e01014_high.jpg

The guy holding the aereogel has this Oh God oh God please don't let me drop
 it look on his face.
And the guy behind the window has his hands clasped together like he's
 praying the same thing.

The guy that look's like he is praying is actually filming. He's holding up a
stick,
and on the end of the stick is a video camera. I guess they filmed it
that way to get a better view. The scientists were taking turns holding up
that stick
that night.

Also, I had misidentifed the person in the glasses. That is not Brownlee - he's
not that short. The guy with the glasses is Fred Horz.

Also, here's a photo I took last November in the same cleanroom of Fred Horz
(left) and
Tom See (right) practicing the aerogel grid separation:

http://stardust.jpl.nasa.gov/photo/jsc095.jpg

I assisted them with the procedure back then, and was there to see the grid
separation with the
real thing last week.

[meteorite-list] Harvey Awards - New Catagory

2006-01-24 Thread Greg Hupe

Dear List Members,

A month or two ago I posted to the list that I felt that Steve Arnold - IMB
and Phil Mani should be nominated for a Harvey Award for their Huge Brenham
Main Mass discovery and also Geoff Notkin for his tireless work on behalf of
the Hurricane Katrina Fund Raiser among other too-numerous to list
meteorite-related activities.

I know that Geoff and Steve originally set up the Harvey Awards where they
could not nominate themselves for an award. I would like all list members to
join me here on the list to nominate these fine gentleman for a Harvey Award
an encourage them to make a new category where they could receive an award
if enough of us voted YES to this. Maybe they could create a People's
Choice award or something along these lines.

Everyone in favor, send the list a resounding YES and lets acknowledge
their contributions and achievements in public.

Consider this my YES vote...

Subject: [meteorite-list] Harvey Awards - New Catagory

Dear List Members,

A month or two ago I posted to the list that I felt that Steve Arnold -
IMB and Phil Mani should be nominated for a Harvey Award for their Huge
Brenham Main Mass discovery and also Geoff Notkin for his tireless work
on behalf of the Hurricane Katrina Fund Raiser among other too-numerous
to list meteorite-related activities.

I know that Geoff and Steve originally set up the Harvey Awards where
they could not nominate themselves for an award. I would like all list
members to join me here on the list to nominate these fine gentleman
for a Harvey Award an encourage them to make a new category where they
could receive an award if enough of us voted YES to this. Maybe they
could create a People's Choice award or something along these lines.

Everyone in favor, send the list a resounding YES and lets
acknowledge their contributions and achievements in public.

Consider this my YES vote...

[meteorite-list] GA. Fireball spotted on 1/19/06 @ 10:55 pm.

2006-01-24 Thread Mark A. Massey
Hello All,

I guess nobody else saw this fireball that I mentioned in the
previous e-mail. I will get the azimuth on Wednesday. I also
submitted this to about 5 TV stations and 2 of the 5 meteorologists
got back to me and never received a call. How strange is this???.
Is there a web site that I could go to to see if this was
documented?. It was white and in one piece and in the Eastern sky
and lasted for 3-4 seconds. It came awfully close to the earth.

[meteorite-list] Jailbird Harvey Award

2006-01-24 Thread McCartney Taylor
As long as we are on the subject of a new Harvey Award, I'd like to
propose a Jailbird award. Many of us know the dangers of
Meteorite hunting, among them are the hazards of foolish and
contrite laws.

These laws have imprisioned quite a few meteorite hunters over the
years in many countries, including our beloved Bob Haag in
Argentina and recently our Russian comrades in Oman. So I
propose a new award for the meteorite collector/hunter who spends
time in the slammer on a meteorite-related cause.

Who seconds my proposal?

-mt

ps. YES on the Arnold/Mani proposal.

Ed, Bernd, Well, I wish I had seen this message to Bernd earlier - it made
me think of a trip I was on when I was about 7 years old to Batsto
 Village.
This meteorwrong is most probably Batsto Ore or Batsto Slag. Batsto ran
one of the larger foundries in the Pine Barrens of New Jersey during the
American War of Independence and supplied George Washington's troops with
 this
finished product to add some iron to the Redcoats' diets and the cannon
 balls
to send many a British ship to rest with the crustaceans at the bottom of
 the
seas. Certainly this is interesting material, and the fact that it is far
from highways today doesn't necessary reflect the situation of colonial
 roads
and supply lines 230 years ago...There were many foundries scattered through
the area near the pinelands, as the pine was the fuel for the foundries and
the ore was found on the surface in many places...

A quick Google finds a nice picture of the ore material, and other sites
mention that limonite deposits used as raw material in the area are called
 bog
iron.Your meteorwrong has a British pedigree!

Here is another find from the web, an advertisement from a 1775 store, I
believe in Philadelphia - shows there was a lot of this stuff to go around:
TO BE SOLD, By Little and Flower, at their store in Second-street, six
 doors above Arch-
street, sixty ton of Batsto pig iron,

 Just found this,

This material was found in New Jersey. The woods in which it was found is
part of thousands of acres of undeveloped land (mostly state watershed
property). I was @ 30 miles in from the nearest road.

They do not look like spheres.

As far as specific gravity, I have no ideaa piece the size of a man's

My philosophy on life, taught to me by my Mother.

If you don't have anything nice to say about someone, don't say anything at
all.

My interpretation of this is just a slight modification.

If you don't have anything nice to say about someone, shut your face.

or

buy a bag of lemons, preferably, the Meyer type. ( half orange, half lemon )

There are exceptions to the rule as you would expect, they would be, someone
has tried to kill you or a member of your family, or thieve from you. Any
such statements regards innapropriate behaviour such as just mentioned,
should always be provable and backed up with a statement.

Exceptions to the above rule would be in place if it involved lies by

Hi Bill,

The more clearly we can focus our attention on the wonders and realities of
the universe about us, the less taste we shall have for destruction. --
Rachel Carson

Traveling would more appropriately word to describe the experiences of a
seven-year old stamp collecting explorer blessed to be tagging along with his
parents to see the natural beauty of the eastern United States. This was an
especially memorable tour of the lesser known region, where there were many
species of endangered fauna and flora to see. The Monarchs near in Cape May
Courthouse, another beautiful historic town in the general area, left an
impression for life...not to mention Calvert Cliffs, MD...

Bill, if you have kids or grandchildren at that impressionable age, and can
afford an inexpensive getaway, they can go on school or educational field
trips to Batsto and environs to learn about colonial life and industry in
British America. It looks like certain glass making techniques are actually
demonstrated there (of interest to a tektiticist), along with the old foundry
oven
being somewhat cared for. It'd be a great place for a young meteoriticist to
learn about the production of old slags and climb on to the pile of bog
ore when the caretakers aren't looking. I don't remember too well the
details,
it's been a while. Check out the web site, www.batstovillage.org, where
everything is probably covered...

Saludos, Doug
P.S. Batsto has one of the four oldest post offices in the United States,
Authorized by President Millard Fillmore in 1852, it is in the same building
though operation was not continuous. Only hand stamping is done there still.
Somewhere I have some nice examples of yellowing envelopes from Batsto with
interesting inked designs of the envelopes from there which I spent my hard
earned pennies at that time. Ahhh...the wonder of childhood!!! And now added
to that is a great locality of meteorwrongs...

Ed, Bernd, Well, I wish I had seen this message to Bernd earlier - it
made
me think of a trip I was on when I was about 7 years old to Batsto
Village.
This meteorwrong is most probably Batsto Ore or Batsto Slag. Batsto
ran
one of the larger foundries in the Pine Barrens of New Jersey during the
American War of Independence and supplied George Washington's troops with
this
finished product to add some iron to the Redcoats' diets and the cannon
balls
to send many a British ship to rest with the crustaceans at the bottom of
the
seas. Certainly this is interesting material, and the fact that it is
far
from highways today doesn't necessary reflect the situation of colonial
roads
and supply lines 230 years ago...There were many foundries scattered
through
the area near the pinelands, as the pine was the fuel for the foundries
and
the ore was found on the surface in many places...

A quick Google finds a nice picture of the ore material, and other sites
mention that limonite deposits used as raw material in the area are
called bog
iron.Your meteorwrong has a British pedigree!

Here is another find from the web, an advertisement from a 1775 store, I
believe in Philadelphia - shows there was a lot of this stuff to go
around:
TO BE SOLD, By Little and Flower, at their store in Second-street, six
 doors above Arch-

Re: [meteorite-list] GA. Fireball spotted on 1/19/06 @ 10:55 pm.

2006-01-24 Thread Sterling K. Webb

Hi, Mark,

Because of the innate limitations of our
brain routines for distance and the absence
of any reference points in the sky, fireballs
almost always seem to go down very
close to the observer.
Just over that hill, or just behind the barn,
one hears it again and again, when the bolide
was 20 miles up, hypersonic, and if it left any
fragments -- well, they are three counties over!
As for observation, well, you were just very
fortunate to have seen it. While God may mark
the fall of every sparrow, the same guarantee
does not seem to apply to humans spotting
meteorites and fireballs! Many spectacular
fireballs go unobserved, and most meteorites
are finds not falls. You were lucky to have
even seen it.
I once saw a spectacular daylight bolide half
as bright as the Sun. It was June 30th, so it was
probably a beta Taurid. It may well have been
an earth grazer like the Grand Teton fireball.
It was brighter, so probably bigger.
I spent many months trying to dig up other
observations so I could triangulate its path,
even advertising in many small town newspapers
(farmers look up now and then, don't they?),
and failed to come up with a single observation.
Nobody noticed or remembered, it seemed.

Hi Mark-

It isn't all that strange. My cameras pick up quite a few big fireballs that
nobody ends up reporting (and here in Colorado, all the TV stations and
newspapers refer reports to me). Just a couple of weeks ago we had a very
large fireball right over Denver at 6:30 in the evening, and I only got two
reports.

The sad fact is, very few people ever look up.

The fireball you saw (while no doubt very impressive) sounds like a fairly
typical one. If you saw it come near the ground, it means if was far away-
probably at least 100 miles. There may have been more witnesses closer to
the event, assuming it wasn't over the ocean.

NASA Headquarters, Washington

News Release: 2006-015 Jan. 24, 2006

Mars Rovers Advance Understanding of the Red Planet

NASA's Mars rovers, Spirit and Opportunity, have been working
overtime to help scientists better understand ancient environmental
conditions on the red planet. The rovers are also generating
excitement about the exploration of Mars outlined in NASA's
Vision for Space Exploration.

The rovers continue to find new variations of bedrock in areas
they are exploring on opposite sides of Mars. The geological
information they have collected adds evidence about ancient
Martian environments that included periods of wet, possibly
habitable conditions.

The extended journeys taken by the two rovers across the surface
of Mars has allowed the science community to continue to uncover
discoveries that will enable new investigations of the red planet
far into the future. said Mary Cleave, associate administrator
for the Science Mission Directorate, NASA Headquarters.

NASA's third mission extension for the rovers lasts through
September 2006, if they remain usable that long. During their
three-month primary missions, the rovers drove farther and
examined more rocks than the prescribed criteria for success.

Opportunity begins its third year on Mars today. It is examining
bedrock exposures along a route between Endurance and Victoria
craters. Opportunity found evidence of a long-ago habitat of
standing water on Mars.

On Jan. 3, Spirit passed its second anniversary inside the
Connecticut-sized Gusev Crater. Initially, Spirit did not find
evidence of much water, and hills that might reveal more about
Gusev's past were still mere bumps on the horizon. By operating
eight times as long as planned, Spirit was able to climb up those
hills, examine a wide assortment of rocks and find mineral
fingerprints of ancient water.

While showing signs of wear, Spirit and Opportunity are still
being used to their maximum remaining capabilities. On Spirit, the
teeth of the rover's rock abrasion tool are too worn to grind the
surface off any more rocks, but its wire-bristle brush can still
remove loose coatings. The tool was designed to uncover three rocks,
but it exposed interiors of 15 rocks. On Opportunity, the steering
motor for the front right wheel stopped working eight months ago. A
motor at the shoulder joint of the rover's robotic arm shows
symptoms of a broken wire in the motor winding. Opportunity can still
maneuver with its three other steerable wheels. Its shoulder motor
still works when given extra current, and the arm is still useable
without that motor.

The rovers are two of five active robotic missions at Mars, which
include NASA's Mars Odyssey and Mars Global Surveyor and the European
Space Agency's Mars Express orbiters. The orbiters and surface
missions complement each other in many ways. Observations by the rovers
provide ground-level understanding for interpreting global observations
by the orbiters. In addition to their own science missions, the
orbiters relay data from Mars.

NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Pasadena, Calif., a division of the
California Institute of Technology, manages the Mars Exploration Rover,
Odyssey and Global Surveyor projects for NASA's Science Mission
Directorate.

[meteorite-list] NASA May Pull Plug on Dawn Asteroid Mission

2006-01-24 Thread Ron Baalke

http://www.newscientistspace.com/article/dn8624--nasa-may-pull-plug-on-dawn-asteroid-mission.html

NASA may pull plug on Dawn asteroid mission
Jeff Hecht
New Scientist
24 January 2006

It is make-or-break time for an over-budget mission to the two largest
main-belt asteroids - NASA has delayed its Dawn mission while managers
review its fate.

Two independent review panels will brief top NASA managers on Friday,
who will then make the decision. The Dawn mission to asteroids Ceres and
Vesta was supposed to launch in June 2006, but now it will not launch
until spring 2007, at best. At worst it may be cancelled.

Ceres and Vesta offer new insights on the origins of the solar system
because they are among the few survivors of the first generation of
protoplanets - asteroids in the belt that lies between Mars and Jupiter.

Differences between the two asteroids intrigue planetary scientists.
Vesta melted early in its history, while Ceres did not. The latter
remains an aggregate of primordial material, including water. Dawn would
spend several months studying each asteroid close-up with a camera, two
spectrometers, a laser altimeter, and a magnetometer.

Spiralling costs

Approved in December 2001, Dawn was supposed to cost no more than $300
million, including launch and mission operations. When launch costs
rose, NASA approved spending $371 million, but that was the limit.

However, several problems have pushed cost upwards, including
weaker-than-expected tanks holding xenon for the ion drive, and issues
with the drive's power source. We thought we should give NASA a
warning that it might be up to $40 million further over budget,
Christopher Russell at the University of Los Angeles, US, and principal
investigator for the Dawn mission told New Scientist. They did not
react well to that news.

In mid-October NASA stopped most work for a review of Dawn's prospects.
A decision is expected within weeks. If NASA is willing to spend the
money, Russell says Dawn could be launched within 12 months in a window
extending until October 2007.

[meteorite-list] New Report on Odessa Crater Raises Question: Are We Due?

2006-01-24 Thread Ron Baalke

http://www.columbusdispatch.com/science/science.php?story=dispatch/2006/01/24/20060124-B9-02.html

New report on Odessa crater raises question: Are we due?
DALE GNIDOVEC
Columbus Dispatch (Ohio)
January 24, 2006

The specimen isn't much to look at - it's heavy and rusty, and about the
size of my fist. A casual observer might mistake it for a chunk of old
farm machinery, but in fact it's a meteorite.

Rather, it is a small piece of one formed about the same time as Earth,
4.6 billion years ago. It died in a spectacular collision with our
planet just yesterday in geologic terms, a mere 63,500 years ago.

Our chunk is a piece of the Odessa meteorite, named for the town in
western Texas not far from the southeastern corner of New Mexico. Five
craters are clustered there, four small ones and a larger one. The
largest is about 525 feet across and nearly 100 feet deep.

Discovered in 1921, it was only the second meteorite crater identified
in the United States. Thousands of fragments of the meteorite have been
found, including some in 1935 using one of the world's first metal
detectors. The largest recovered so far weighs 300 pounds, and the
fragments have a combined weight of more than 10 tons.

They are composed of about 90 percent iron, 8 percent nickel and a
smattering of other elements. A lot of research has been done on those
pieces, but some recently published research investigated the craters
and the surrounding area to get an idea of what the impact was like.

It would have been a spectacular event for anyone - or anything - around
to see it. Animals living in the area at that time, which was open,
semiarid grassland much as it is today, included mammoths, horses, bison
and camels.

Hitting the atmosphere at 25,000 to 38,000 mph, the meteorite
fragmented. The impact produced winds of more than 600 mph and severely
damaged everything within 2 miles. Any animals within that zone were
probably killed instantly. The energy released was equivalent to a
magnitude 3.1 earthquake.

Some researchers have proposed that the Odessa meteorite and the one
that made the more famous Barringer Crater (also known as Meteor Crater)
near Winslow, Ariz., were part of the same fall. Both are quite recent
impacts, as these things go, and both were made by the same kind of
meteorite.

The new dating of the Odessa impact shows that was not the case,
however. The Barringer Crater formed 50,000 years ago, about 13,000
years after Odessa.

Perhaps we are due for another one soon.

Dale Gnidovec is curator of the Orton Geological Museum at Ohio State
University.

That would be pretty easy to find out with some basic equipment. Take some

of

the object (the amount by which the water level rises is the volume. If you
don't have that, fill some sort of comtainer to the very top. Carefully
place

the object in it and captue the water that spills out. Weigh that water and
calculate how much volume that weight of water would have. Either way, once
you

have the volume, weigh the thing and divide weight by volume.
