List,

We just got back from Tucson. What a place. We
overheard a little 5 year old tell his mom: I get
it! If you make more money you can buy more
rocks!---which about sums it all up.

I wanted to share some pics of a remarkable little
Sikhote we found. The best find of the show for us,
and we found a lot of fine stuff!

Enjoy!

[meteorite-list] Fireball over Canada

2006-02-03 Thread Darren Garrison
http://calsun.canoe.ca/News/Alberta/2006/02/03/1424113-sun.html

Calgarians awoke to a fire in the sky early Wednesday morning.

Alan Hildebrand, co-ordinator of the Canadian Fireball Reporting Centre, said 20
people reported seeing a fireball, an exceptionally bright meteor, streak across
the sky just before 7 a.m., lasting for several seconds before breaking up into
fragments.

Reports were made from the Calgary area, Medicine Hat, Lethbridge, Pincher Creek
and other areas, he said.

It had to be a bright one for everyone in the Calgary area to see, Hildebrand
said.

He estimated remnants of the meteorite landed about 400 km south of Calgary
somewhere in Montana about two minutes after it appeared as a ball of fire.

[meteorite-list] New Image Shows Speck of Comet Dust from Stardust Mission

Seeing stardust: New image shows speck of comet dust from NASA mission
UC Berkeley News
1 February 2006

Comet dust embedded in aerogel
Photo by Hope Ishii/Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory

This photo from NASA shows a mote of comet dust embedded in a tiny wedge
of aerogel extracted from the Stardust collectors that returned to Earth
Jan. 15. The comet dust was extracted by University of California,
Berkeley, researcher Christopher Snead using new nanomanipulation
techniques developed at the campus's Space Sciences Laboratory.

The grain of dust entered the aerogel from the lower right at supersonic
speed and moved to the upper left, where it can be seen as a bright dot
at the end of the carrot-shaped trail. The large oval cavity at lower
right was blown out by shock waves created as the grain exceeded the
sound barrier in the aerogel. At right is a micromachined fixture
developed by UC Berkeley physicists, in collaboration with Chris Keller
of MEMS Precision Instruments, to extract grains of comet and
interstellar dust from the detectors.

A team led by UC Berkeley research physicist Andrew Westphal also
developed the device - a glass needle attached to a
robotically-controlled micromanipulator - to cut out the wedge-shaped
piece of aerogel from a larger aerogel tile. The aerogel-embedded comet
grain, still in the clean room at the Johnson Space Center in Houston,
will be distributed to researchers for study. The trail is about 1
millimeter long, while the dust grain is only 10 microns across, or
one-tenth the diameter of a human hair.

[meteorite-list] Stardust to Land at Carnegie

2006-02-03 Thread Ron Baalke

http://www.carnegieinstitution.org/news_releases/Stardust.html

Stardust to land at Carnegie
Carnegie Institution
February 1, 2006

Carnegie scientists breathed a sigh of relief on Sunday, January 15 when
NASA's Stardust mission landed safely with the first solid comet samples
ever brought back to Earth. As members of the mission's Preliminary
Examination Team, Larry Nittler and Conel Alexander (both Department of
Terrestrial Magnetism) with Marc Fries and George Cody (both Geophysical
Laboratory) will be among the first to get their hands on these precious
samples, captured from the coma of comet Wild-2. These tiny bits hold
clues to the formation of the solar system, and might even reveal how
organic molecules - the ingredients of life - first arrived on Earth.

It has been an exciting week, Nittler said. No one quite knew what to
expect when the team at Johnson Space Center opened the capsule, so when
we heard the collection grid was filled with particles, we could hardly
contain ourselves.

Scientists believe comets like Wild-2 are the oldest solid bodies in the
solar system. Yet until now, no one has seen a piece of a comet up
close. Researchers expect to retrieve less than one thousandth of an
ounce of material from Stardust's collection grid. By comparing the
structure and chemistry of Stardust grains to interstellar dust and rare
meteorites rich in organic material, researchers may be able to fill in
some significant holes concerning the evolution and history of our solar
system.

It is likely that some of the carbon in our bodies was originally bound
up in comets and delivered to the early Earth through impacts, Fries
explained. So when we say that 'we are stardust' we are literally
talking about the type of material that Stardust has returned to our
laboratories for analysis.

Carnegie's share of the bounty is due to arrive in early February, and
the researchers are ready with a brand new, $2.8 million NanoSIMS ion
probe. Ion probes can reveal the chemical makeup of a sample by
vaporizing tiny target areas with a stream of ions, allowing an accurate
count of the elements emitted as a result; with much greater sensitivity
than previous ion probes, the NanoSIMS is an ideal tool for analyzing
minuscule Stardust grains.

Nittler, Alexander, Fries, and Cody also plan to study the physical and
chemical details of Stardust grains using two different spectroscopic
techniques. First, by analyzing laser light reflected from a sample,
Raman spectroscopy can reveal both the structure of minerals and the
forms of carbon present.

Second, a unique soft X-ray microscope at Lawrence Berkeley National
Laboratory's Advanced Light Source facility in California enables a
technique called XANES spectroscopy, which can help characterize the
carbon, nitrogen, and oxygen species in organic matter. Since the
carbon-containing materials from Wild-2 are likely to be unchanged since
the birth of the solar system, these analyses are especially important.

We can't wait to get going on these experiments, Cody said. Stardust
is really just the beginning; Carnegie now has the tools to take a
leading role in sample-return analysis for decades to come.

NASA provided funds in support of this work through the Stardust
Participating Scientist Program. NASA's Sample Return Laboratory
Instrument and Data Analysis (SRLIDA) program funded both the Raman
instrument and a portion of the cost of the NanoSIMS ion probe. NASA
also provided partial support for work at the Advanced Light Source, a
facility funded by the U.S. Department of Energy.

More information about the Stardust mission may be found at the

OPPORTUNITY UPDATE: Mozart on Mars - sol 715-721, Feb 02, 2006:

Opportunity is healthy and is continuing the characterization of an
outcrop called Olympia. The rover is on top of a feature called
Overgaard. The plan is to complete a mosaic with the microscopic
imager, then drive toward a feature called Roosevelt and examine it
with tools on the robotic arm.

The informal names of targets on Overgaard are related to Mozart,
marking his 250th birthday on Jan. 27.

Sol-by-sol summaries:

Sol 715 and 716 (Jan. 27 and 28, 2006): Used the microscopic imager on
Branchwater and Bourbon.

Sol 717: Bumped to Overgaard to do an extensive mosaic with the
microscopic imager.

Sol 718: Conducted untargeted remote sensing (atmospheric science).

Sol 719: Planned use of the microscopic imager on targets
Don_Giovanni, Salzburg and Nachtmusik, but a robotic arm error
occurred during the work on Salzburg.

Sol 720: Conducted untargeted remote sensing.

Sol 721 (Feb. 2, 2006): Cleared the errors for another attempt to use
the microscopic imager on Overgaard.

Opportunity's total odometry as of sol 721 is 6,505 meters (4.04 miles).

[meteorite-list] Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter is on the Approach

Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter is on the Approach
February 3, 2006

[graphic]

NASA's next martian orbiter has gotten one step closer to the red planet
with the transition from cruise phase to approach phase!

Cruise is a deceptive term - we certainly weren't playing
shuffleboard, joked project manager Jim Graf. It was a very busy time
for the team. Many tests were conducted to ensure that the instruments
onboard were functioning properly and our navigators performed
trajectory correction maneuvers to keep us on a very precise path to Mars.

Speaking of that precision, the third of four possible course
corrections was deemed unnecessary this week.

The navigation solutions have shown a great consistency since the
second trajectory correction maneuver was executed on November 18, said
Han You, navigation team chief. More importantly, the current data
indicate that the spacecraft aim for insertion into Mars' orbit is well
within the projected target. If the current trend continues, the
spacecraft will require only a very small nudge to fine tune the final
aim.

The next trajectory correction maneuver opportunity is scheduled for
February 28, 2006. The orbiter will arrive at the planet on March 10, 2006.
