[meteorite-list] watch out - Ad police about!!

2006-04-04 Thread Dave Harris

Hello,
Right, I know this is OT, but it DID impact on me and I get such excellent
info from the list that I have decided to turn this problem over to you all
- you can delete (I would if I were you!) but if you have been harangued
then maybe you too might need to realise you are not alone.
So
..hey hey... watch out for the Ad police, but he only picks on the small
fry and bullies them - so you big guys who are professional, offer good
stuff and good prices are exempt... but beware the wrath of the ever-right .
.Ops, nearly gave his name away!

Sorry to be so petty but this individual is a bully and to be honest, from
the feedback I am getting offlist, it seems that I am not the only one who
has been judged, juried and executed by this magnificant individual.

He threatened to turn this issue over to the list so now here is the Big Man
s chance.

Sorry to be rather off topic, but I left the list for a good reason
(attitudes c.) a year ago, and guess what, within a week one of these
kindly souls tried to stick the boot in.

How about a competition to guess who it is?

Prize? well, the satisfaction of outting a mean-spirited individual and the
knowledge that we have a calmer, more respectful and peaceful list in future
- so we can read our mails or digests and enjoy!!!

Yep, I'm peeved, but strangely happy!

Best!

X-RAYS REVEAL 250,000 TONNES OF WATER RELEASED BY DEEP IMPACT

Over the weekend of 9-10 July 2005 a team of UK and US scientists,
led by Dr. Dick Willingale of the University of Leicester, used
NASA's Swift satellite to observe the collision of NASA's Deep
Impact spacecraft with comet Tempel 1.

Reporting today (Tuesday) at the UK 2006 National Astronomy Meeting
in Leicester, Dr. Willingale revealed that the Swift observations
show that the comet grew brighter and brighter in X-ray light after
the impact, with the X-ray outburst lasting a total of 12 days.

The Swift observations reveal that far more water was liberated and
over a longer period than previously claimed, said Dick Willingale.

Swift spends most of its time studying objects in the distant
Universe, but its agility allows it to observe many objects per
orbit. Dr. Willingale used Swift to monitor the X-ray emission from
comet Tempel 1 before and after the collision with the Deep Impact
probe.

The X-rays provide a direct measurement of how much material was
kicked up after the impact. This is because the X-rays were created
by the newly liberated water as it was lifted into the comet's thin
atmosphere and illuminated by the high-energy solar wind from the
Sun.

The more material liberated, the more X-rays are produced,
explained Dr. Paul O'Brien, also from the University of Leicester.

The X-ray power output depends on both the water production rate
from the comet and the flux of subatomic particles streaming out
of the Sun as the solar wind. Using data from the ACE satellite,
which constantly monitors the solar wind, the Swift team managed
to calculate the solar wind flux at the comet during the X-ray
outburst. This enabled them to disentangle the two components
responsible for the X-ray emission.

Tempel 1 is usually a rather dim, weak comet with a water production
rate of 16,000 tonnes per day. However, after the Deep Impact probe
hit the comet this rate increased to 40,000 tonnes per day over the
period 5-10 days after impact. Over the duration of the outburst,
the total mass of water released by the impact was 250,000 tonnes.

One objective of the Deep Impact mission was to determine what
causes cometary outbursts. A simple theory suggests that such
outbursts are caused by the impact of meteorites on the comet
nucleus. If this is the case, Deep Impact should have initiated
an outburst.

Although the impact was observed across the electromagnetic
spectrum, most of what was seen was directly attributable to the
impact explosion. After 5 days, optical observations showed that
the comet was indistinguishable from its state prior to the
collision. This was in stark contrast to the X-ray observations.

The analysis of the X-ray behaviour by the Swift team indicates that
the collision produced an extended X-ray outburst largely because
the amount of water produced by the comet had increased.

A collision such as Deep Impact can cause an outburst, but
apparently something rather different from the norm can also
happen, said Dr. Willingale. Most of the water seen in X-rays
came out slowly, possibly in the form of ice-covered dust grains.

And what of the world's thief? It doesn't matter - I have no authority. I just wonder how we can continuously and successfully recover material from certain regions without ending up in jail? Does this ever happen? This same market is often coextensive with the artifact looting that is rampant in South America and and Africa North of the Sahara. Many dealers are selling looted artifacts found near strewn field (or vice-versa - meteorites at open air Mousterian, Acheulian, Aterian, and Epipaleolithicsites). I'm myself guilty of buying artifacts from meteorite dealers, but I recognize that the artifact market only intersectsat fewinstances with the meteoritetrade. Hi Dave and List,

I have no idea who you are talking about but whoever it was posted to you
off-list. Why don't we keep this well beaten subject off of the List as it
has already been hashed out. I agree with Art's rule about one Ad post per
week and according to a recent poll taken by a List member and made public,
the vast majority of other members agree with this rule as well. This is a
self policing forum so if somebody breaks the rules, there will always be
others who will point it out. If this person was not kind to you, then
ignore them but to have a witch hunt on the List is unacceptable. How does
this promote meteorites?

It was not me who sent the email to Dave. If I have a problem, I am not
afraid to address it publicly and throw names around if needed. On the
other hand, if I am in error, I will be the first to admit it.

[meteorite-list] Repost, no replies. Meteorite living database

2006-04-04 Thread Kevin Forbes

Hello all,
I am reposting this as there were no replies at all.

Was it such a bad idea??

Hi list,

I would like to propose the development online, with all your help and
input,

A living upadatedable database for our collections and items for sale.

The database would of couse have to have live ONLINE on someones server
that has 24/7 online access.

I suggest that it be in a format that allows a personal copy for each
meteorite collector to be run on their own machine.

That the copy on each collectors machine maintain a valid database of their
own collection,.

It should allow for media files of specimens to be displayed., BMP, JPG,
MPEG, whatever.

And that their database, occassioanally, or at will, update the main
database server.

The intention of updating the database server is so that all other users
databases are also updated with the latest information, which should
include, New additions to personal collections, New additions to items for
sale, New additions to the Met Bull, etc.

I am somewhat fluent in Borland Delphi, but help is always appreciated.

This may be above me in the world these days, I don't know, unless we try.

I know that there are a lot of programmers out there, and lots of
languages, maybe we can get something together?

I think this would be a serious contribution towards the study, specimen
location, and availability of specimens on the internet and indeed the
world, once completed and operational.

If the collector does not wish their items to be displayed to the world,
the program should run in, PERSONAL MODE. (but that anyone running in
personal mode be displayed to other users as such)

I posess, a personal Borland Delphi license, which means that any software
that I develop, must be totally free to users. (which has always been the
case, see Ford Decoding, google) If I purchase a commercial license, I can
sell it. About $ 1500 USD

At the moment, everything is free.

All your suggestions are welcome.

A thought I had. :-)

Cheers all, Kevin, VK3UKF.
