[meteorite-list] Ballistol Source?

2006-10-04 Thread Mike Groetz
Good Morning-
Recently I purchased a large Campo meteorite for my
collection and have been recommended to occasionally
use Ballistol on it to avoid corrosion.
I have not been able to find it locally in any gun,
sporting goods or hardware stores. I did find a couple
sources on the internet but with a very high S/H.
Would any of you be able to recommend a reasonably
priced internet source? And if worse comes to worse-
would you recommend an equivalent alternate?
Thank you
Mike

Hi all,
We (Earl, Stan, Jim and I) just spent a very quick day
and a half in Glorieta and had a great time! The first
on, then off, then on again trip was really a spur of
the moment romp through the mountains that yielded
some very cool pallasites and siderites. We drove
most of the evening, and arrived in Santa Fe around 11
PM. We hunted all the next day but found all our
meteorites by around 2 o' clock. Our nearly 200 grams
was about as much as one can expect to find in a day
at Glorieta. We were very happy with our finds. Earl
found two meteorites, his first Glorieta pallasite and
siderite in the same day. Stan found three meteorites,
2 siderites and one pallasite. I found about 125 grams
worth, all siderites. Jim got the skunk, although he
made a valiant effort. Take a look at some of the
pictures.

[meteorite-list] AD - Polymict Diogenite Breccia ending today, Pallasite tomorrow

2006-10-04 Thread Greg Hupe

Dear List Members,

I would like to give a brief notice that my eBay auctions for the new
Polymict Diogenite Breccia, NWA 4473 (the one I originally thought was
lunar), will be ending in just a couple hours. I am still amazed this is not
a lunar! Thank you to all who have purchased some of this, lets hear what
your thoughts are of the specimens you received. I also have auctions ending
of the new Saharan Pallasite, NWA 4482, these will end tomorrow. Both NWA
4473 and NWA 4482 have the Buy it Now feature with a lower starting price
so if you are interested, you may not want to wait until the last minute and
let someone else grab that key piece for your collection!

How a local boy found his destiny in the stars
Meteoric tale forged friendship, cemented interest in astronomy for future
scientist

Wednesday, October 4, 2006

By CAROL SMITH
P-I REPORTER

KIRKLAND -- In one of those chance collisions rampant in a random universe, a
bit of space debris crashed into Jeffrey McClintock's life half a century ago
and propelled him in a direction he might never have imagined.

McClintock, then 13 years old, picked up his morning paper that January day and
got so excited his brain felt like a bottle rocket with a lit fuse.

A meteorite had streaked from outer space straight into the backyard observatory
of a Kirkland man, nearly setting his house ablaze before embedding itself in an
old astronomy text. It was 1955, two years pre-Sputnik, and space fantasies
consumed many a burgeoning telescope geek, including the skinny McClintock, a
Popular Mechanics devotee and would-be stargazer.

McClintock, who is now senior astrophysicist at the Smithsonian Astrophysical
Observatory in Cambridge, Mass., and an expert on black holes, was so impressed
he had to see Luther Hawthorne's meteorite hit for himself.

His quest was such a pivot point for McClintock that the scientist recently
embarked on a voyage back in space-time -- real, not astronomical -- in search
of those early scientific roots.

I seek your help, he wrote the Seattle P-I. While in junior high school, I
read on your pages what remains the most astonishing newspaper story that I have
encountered in my 64 years.

But as sometimes happens when looking back through the ages with a more powerful
lens, the universe isn't what it seemed.

Adventure in Kirkland

Back in 1955, McClintock, who lived with his parents, two brothers and a sister
in Port Orchard, dredged up Hawthorne's phone number and wrangled an invitation
to visit him in Kirkland, then a sleepy, rural place.

He caught the little ferry to Bremerton, then the big ferry to Seattle, then a
Greyhound bus to Kirkland, which is where his adventure truly began.

There, old Mr. Hawthorne picked me up and drove me the rest of the way in his
DeSoto, which had a distinctive meteorological seal prominently displayed on its
doors. He was all over the road, and I saw the locals pull off into driveways
and fields to avoid a possible collision, McClintock recalled. His eyesight
was dim, and his hook hand at first disturbed me.

Hawthorne, 72 at the time, was an amateur astronomer, certified weather spotter,
former machinist and ex-Scout master who lived alone. A diabetic, he was in
failing health, which likely accounted for the missing hand. In McClintock,
though, he'd found a fan.

At his home, Hawthorne showed the dumbstruck kid the punctured dome with bits of
meteorite driven into the metal.

Standing there under the jerry-rigged metal lid of the homemade, mini-Mount
Palomar, McClintock was captivated -- but by something else entirely.

I remember staring at his refracting telescope, said McClintock, who had
lusted for just such a device poring over magazines at home.

McClintock already had tried two home-built versions, himself, the first an
8-foot linoleum tube tricked out with a $1 pair of lenses he'd seen advertised
in Popular Mechanics.

But telescope lust is no small force of nature, and no sooner was that one built
than he wanted a bigger one, more powerful than the last.

The second was a 6-inch Newtonian reflector fitted with a mirror he'd made
himself.

My first discovery was that everything looked upside down, he said.

He would poke the lens out his attic window and marvel at the way he could read
the letters on a blue car lot sign across the bay. But mostly, he would stare at
the moon.

It would be the end of the decade before the U.S. named its first astronauts;
the end of the next before it put a man on the moon. To the teenage McClintock,
though, just the sight of the moon up close filled him with awe. He would aim
his viewfinder to catch the sun sweeping off its peaks, which looked as near to
him as the Olympics. His hobby made him feel a bit of an oddball. No one in
his immediate family or at his school shared his enthusiasm for the night sky.

Despite the lack of encouragement, he pressed on.

At the time he met Hawthorne, he had just begun work on a 4-inch refracting
telescope using a commercial lens, but he was stymied about how to build a
mount.

He knew the mount for the scope was as critical as its optics if it were to be
useful. Hawthorne, who must have sensed a kindred spirit in the teen, offered to
help McClintock build such a stand. Over the next nine months, McClintock would
trek to Hawthorne's house and hang out in his tool-stocked shop. I had never
seen metal cut by anything except a hacksaw or a torch, and to see his lathe
peel off metal like it was a potato skin was astonishing, said McClintock.

They made the mount out of pipe fittings and bronze rods, and in the process,
forged a

Hi Bob,

Actually, my part only appears on the Nova ScienceNow website as
a web video; the main story is about Apophis, and although meteorites
are obviously tangentially related to asteroid impacts, the linkage
wasn't direct enough to survive the editing process for the ~12-minute
broadcast segment. Still, I'm looking forward to seeing the show
since I haven't yet seen any of the footage from Neil's visits to

[meteorite-list] Meteor Awes Arizona Residents

2006-10-04 Thread Ron Baalke

http://www.azcentral.com/community/ahwatukee/articles/1004ar-meteor1004Z14.html

Meteor awes Foothills residents
JJ Hensley
The Arizona Republic
October 4, 2006

Jeff Hartman was just out for a night of relaxing stargazing with his
new telescope Sunday night, but he didn't need that visual amplifier to
witness the biggest news in the sky that evening.

The fireball, an extremely bright meteor, streaking across the sky
caught the attention of Hartman, an Ahwatukee Foothill video-game
programmer, and countless others throughout the western United States.

Hartman used to work at the Tomchin Planetarium and Observatory at West
Virginia University, so unlike many observers, he didn't mistake the
fireball for a wayward piece of space trash or a downed plane.

It was very impressive, Hartman said of the unexpected sight viewed
from a park near 44th Street and Ray Road. It was probably the width of
a human hand per second across the sky.

Nikki Diamantopoulos saw the same thing as she ate dessert in her
Ahwatukee backyard Sunday evening.

It was probably the biggest shooting star I'd ever seen, she said.
And I did hope it wasn't anything worse.

Worried residents called police and fire departments.

It turns out Arizonans weren't alone in witnessing the fireball as it
hurtled through the night sky.

Residents in New Mexico, Colorado, Oklahoma and Texas reported similar
sightings shortly after 10 p.m. Sunday. Another was reported in
Washington State a short time earlier.

A group that tracks such events found the early October increase in
meteor activity follows a pattern.

In October 1996, Mark Boslough, a New Mexico resident who tracks
incidents, received reports from Texas, California and New Mexico of
large meteors. A few years before that, the same pattern emerged along
the East Coast, and in October 1998, the same pattern was repeated in El
Paso.

It is possible that early October may be the time of an annual meteor
shower, but with bigger meteors, Boslough said.

Re: [meteorite-list] Hammers Update (AD)

2006-10-04 Thread Michael L Blood
 Hi Fellow Meteorite Lovers,
Just a brief note to let you know my hammers page is growing
by leaps and bounds. I now have almost 35 different historical falls
available including photos of the falls, photos of fire balls, links to
videos, specimens available at very competitive prices, etc.
Thanks to Rob Elliott for the latest photo addition - the roof
of the building struck by Moss (I also have the outhouse and the
plumb tree!)
The success of the grand opening of the page on Sept. 19th stirred
a surge of research on my part resulting in many more acquisitions
now available, as well as new photos, information, etc.
Martin Horejsi told me he considered the site a significant
contribution to meteoritic documentation. (blush, blush) I must admit
even I am impressed with it!
I have, however, been shocked by the number of friends I have asked
if they liked it who responded, Oh, I haven't been there yet. So, let
me encourage you - you certainly don't have to be in the market to buy
anything to enjoy seeing the information and photos on this page. (I
consider the photo of the Barwell bolide streaking past Albert Hall to be
worth the entire visit). See Mike Farmer standing next to huts in Thuathe,
see what the city of Heze looks like, see the Ugandan boy struck by a 3 gram
Mbale stone after it zipped through a bannana tree (which probably saved
his life) and don't miss the Moss outhouse!
So, here it is - check it out:

Best wishes, Michael
PS: If anyone knows of (hammer) material available NOT on the above site,
please contact me off list. I give a reward for finding new material.
Thanks.

Mike,

It doesn't matter where you live, Ballistol can be nearly impossible to
find in any retail store. Since you tried your local gun shops without
success, you may have to bite the bullet (sorry - I couldn't resist) and
buy it online.

Ballistol has thousands of uses. Check out http://www.ballistol.com for
more on that. I love it! Yes, it has an odor, but it goes away within a
day. I use it for lots of things.

Best to shop around several websites using google to see who has the best
deal. There are some dealers who have introductory packages that include
aerosol and liquid containers, along with a nice little plastic squeeze
bottle with a needle-like tip for easy dispensing to a tight area.

Good luck!

Subject: [meteorite-list] Ballistol Source?

Good Morning-
Recently I purchased a large Campo meteorite for my
collection and have been recommended to occasionally
use Ballistol on it to avoid corrosion.
I have not been able to find it locally in any gun,
sporting goods or hardware stores. I did find a couple
sources on the internet but with a very high S/H.
Would any of you be able to recommend a reasonably
priced internet source? And if worse comes to worse-
would you recommend an equivalent alternate?
Thank you
Mike

AW: [meteorite-list] Ballistol Source?

2006-10-04 Thread Martin Altmann
Hiho,

dunnoh, if it's helpful, but perhaps it's cheaper to buy from German ebay.
Shipping rates seems to be cheaper, some sellers will ship worldwide,
I'm to lazy to compare, but it seems to be cheaper.
A small bottle costs less than 3$ and if you haven't bought the main mass of
Campo it will last until eternity..

Good luck!

Ed

[meteorite-list] The eBay $13,000,000 space rock

2006-10-04 Thread Dave Harris
Well, I did email the seller with a respectable tone - offering my
experience and so on, and spent some time explaining that the pics couilld
be better and so on and that the price was unreasonable and so on...

I obviously wasted far too much time - I got a single word response Thanks

Then I saw the other guff they were selling at equally ludicrous prices so I
again, politely and self-effacingly emailed them back apologising for not
realising that you were a major loon and that I was foolish to try to help!

I also contacted this seller about item #300034369553 - METEORITE offered at
£7,000,000 starting price, saying that he will never have a single bid and I
received the following reply:

'Of course when someone's grandaddy bought a large house his friends only
jested that it might make a million one day. And of course you'ver NEVER seen a
house advertised for £1million or more. '

Well,... humour...?

I do not know what ebay insertion fees have to be paid with such a starting

game is this?

Re: [meteorite-list] The eBay $13,000,000 space rock

2006-10-04 Thread meteoriteplaya
Hi Frederic
The maximum cost to list any item at any price is $4.80. The real money is in
selling of the item for Ebay. The fees would be almost $200,000 for Ebay and
$377,000 for PayPal. Here is the fee calculator I mentioned on this same
subject earlier in the week.

http://home.alltel.net/micrep/fees.html

Just enter 13,000,000 in both the starting and final sales price. Enter 0 for
shipping as he is nice enough to not charge for that and you will find the
numbers I came up with above.

Re: [meteorite-list] Murchison Price Difference

2006-10-04 Thread MexicoDoug
Don,

A trip to Times Square in New York City ... There's some character and a
crowd oo-ing around him while three upside-down coconut shells he
melodically shuffles. One of them has a pop cap under it. You watch. It's
the one on the right. Some apparently innocent bystander steps up to
gleefully shout That One! pointing to your same coconut shell. The dealer
lifts it up ... and there's the pop top. The bystander snatches a twenty
dollar greenback from the dealer and both sport Garfield rodent eaten grins.

So you decide to match wits with such a meteoric dealer. The crowd opens up
and steps aside... and there you are, through the gauntlet. Abracadabra!
Whi You gasp for your hypnotic moment, and you can't even grapple
for a grumbled guess. That One! you meekly offer, as your heart thrashes
in your chest. Oh! For some enlightenment as your time expressedly expired.
Before you finish aspirating your ...One, the $20 is slipped from your
hand and you're done. You didn't even feel Jackson's crispy creases tickle
your tingling fingers.

Back to penny stocks and microchip meteorites; even though that, 'tis always
that man in that yellow hat:-(

Best wishes, Doug

AW: [meteorite-list] Murchison Price Difference

2006-10-04 Thread Martin Altmann
Hi Don,

although the difference is astounding and the seller decided to hide his
feedback and to make anonymous the bid history - (I ask myself, why any
seller is doing that in a branch, where a dealer essentially lives from
his/her reputation??),
I can assure you that it was no shill bidding, as I know the seller in
person.
He had also enormous defeats to bear on ebay before...

Most ebay-meteorite-sellers will be able to explain, how such differences
between prices for the very same stuff happen,
but they won't do, because it would mean to judge the abilities of their
clients on ebay

Buckleboo!

[meteorite-list] Ballistol to Sheath to Barricade Alternative

2006-10-04 Thread Mike Groetz
Hello-
One of the list members replied to me that if I
could not find Ballistol to go to a product called
Sheath. He has had very good luck with it. After
mentioning it- I remember having read of this on the
list some time ago.
He mentioned the Sheath is available at the Gander
Mountain stores here in Ohio. I went to one near
Columbus tonight. For those of you looking for Sheath-
it has been replaced (in name) by a product called
Barricade. Same company (Birchwood/Casey) and same
product qualities according to the label. In small
print on the front of the upper right corner of the
Barricade label it is marked Formerly Sheath.
So thank you to all that offered advice on
Ballistol- in Europe it sounds very readily available
(I believe it is a German based product). You guys are
lucky!
Got my big Campo, got my Barricade- I'm all set.

Take care
Mike

[meteorite-list] AD - Catalog update, and pictures of the Rockies

2006-10-04 Thread Impactika
Hello everybody,

My Catalog is finally up to date.
I just added some 30 pieces. Some are classics like Boxhole, Dawn and
Ghubara. Portales Valley is a classic too, but these 2 cute little slices have
very
nice iron veins, not so common. Others are not so classic, like Aumale or
Ste Genevieve. And there are a few desert pieces too, like a funny little
curled Taza. Enjoy! and let me know if you have any questions or would like
some
pictures.

http://www.impactika.com/Catalog.htm

And since you liked my pictures last week, here is another batch of pictures
taken up in the Rockies last weekend. These might be the last ones for this
year. You won't find me up there when they are covered with that cold white
s (well, you know, a four-letter word starting with S).

How lucky for us!!!
Otherwise it could be years to have a first find, right Michael Blood?
Or one might still be looking! ;-)
Did you both know each other at that time, Sonny and Ruben?

Better go and read the article.
