Adam and List, Yes, Adam I agree, that is why I wrote about the Mekong iron and now they are offering fake Nantans. They have to stoop pretty low to sell fake Nantan as well?!! It will get much worse in the future from what I see in the local markets in SE Asia. Soon NWAs will be "found" in China and Thailand. We already have them being "newly discovered" in Isreal. The first two pictures (the most important ones, I think) seem to be broken links and aren't showing for me. It's easy to be envious of your northern location after hauling my camera out 7 days straight including last night and this morning with nothing but horizon haze and clouds. The way I figure it the further southern latitudes (N33 - N25) will have the best opportunity very close to the evening of October 16, when the comet will be a good brightness fraction of what it is now, not too diffuse, but after which the Comet will start dimming more rapidly (0.1 mag loss daily throughout November). Here's a nice picture of Rob's Comet you can feast your eyes on taken by a dedicated astronomer near Buffalo, NY...he'll also sells prints. Rob's Comet is very green and this can be noted in the photo. It is a very pretty shot considering Tom Bakowski took it on October 2 and it was so low in the sky (7 degrees), and moisture was evaporating off nearby Lake Erie: http://www.tomseyeonthesky.com/images/Recent/cometSwan.JPG Best wishes, Doug - Original Message - From: Bjorn Sorheim [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: meteorite-list@meteoritecentral.com Sent: Friday, October 06, 2006 1:21 PM Subject: [meteorite-list] The geologist on the moon and Comet SWAN List, Just ran out last night with my camera when I read about the comet on another list. Re: [meteorite-list] Duck Chondrule
Thanks Anne, I wasn't worried. Just reminiscing. I received a few private emails from new list members asking what this is about. Here is the short story. I had a website for a few years called branchmeteorites.com. It was primarily informational though I did have some sales pages. It was constantly under construction. I compiled that hits page to primarily document the effects of worldwide increasing population density. I did not (and do not now) believe that meteorite influx is increasing. My site was initially a labor of love but it got to be simply a labor. The number of hits dropped off. What with time constraints etc., I decided to discontinue the website. Ken Newton asked if the IMCA could have it to add to the IMCA site so naturally I said sure. I am sure Ken will correct me if I am mistaken but he now administers the pages that used to be my site. One of the pages I liked the most was the meteorite test page. If you have not seen it, go to the page and see if you can spot the meteorites vs. meteorwrongs. -Walter Branch - Original Message - From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]; meteorite-list@meteoritecentral.com Sent: Friday, October 06, 2006 9:38 PM Subject: Re: [meteorite-list] Duck Chondrule In a message dated 10/6/2006 6:44:30 P.M. [meteorite-list] status of the Noktat Addagmar meteorite and AD
Dear List, wo would like to thank those of you that sent us replies concerning our request for additional information on the meteoritic material recently found at Noktat Addagmar/Morocco. Unfortunately it seems that fallfresh material with a very similar lithology was found in the close vicinity of the caravansary of Noktat Adagmar before June 30th 2006. This in mind the eye wittness reports claiming the date of the fall to be 2006 June 30 could not be confirmed. Although the meteorites would obviously match a weathering grade W0 and despite the fact that a precise find location has been recorded we were not able to gather further information suffient for a fall submission. We have therefore decided not to submit Noktat Addagmar until the circumstances of the recovery of this pristine meteorite can be fully cleared. We will keep our main mass of 591gm but we will separate with the two smaller fragments of 188gm and 420gm respectively that wemanaged to acquire. Collectors and curators with a small budget and foccused on entry shaped meteoritemorphologies will appreciate that decision. A vote on perpetually increasing meteorite pricing is a vote of confidence in the US economy being the driver of the world, without any dips in the road to eternity. That's a nice thought. Forever consuming 35% of the world's electricity, drowning in petroleum etc. At some point there will be a bust. Maybe when the US Congress realizes that it's debt to equity ratio is worse than a third world country, or maybe when an entire burgeoning generation of aging Americans asks, where is my medical care? Where is my Social Security, and then some responsible fiscal planning starts. Then, Americans will discover German eBay and dump their meteorites there to buy their medications in legions of can you help a brother sales. And suddenly charitable Germans will come to the rescue. Hmmm. 1000 collectors who would rather have an old piece of space rubble than a shining ingot of gold. That fall, ... hmmm ... two tons? Let's see. Each collector can have a couple of kilos. How much is a gram worth? Let German eBay figure it out. Unsatisfied, they will try to negotiate with the nouveau rich of a unified China. have you ever negotiated with them? They're a lot tougher than Germans... Oh yes, the locked up in museums defense. Maybe the Ensisheim Stone won't crack its shackles. Which other ones are so locked up...there must be a few less speculative investments no doubt, like that. But no guarantees...that's why its called business... Right now you can buy a gram of Eucrite for the price of a Big Mac hamburger. We can revisit that ratio when the US starts paying back $400 billion for Iraq and faces high oil prices despite best intentions. Then we can see is a gram of Lunar meteorites can fill my gas tank. (or maybe 10 grams a Russian's tank). Maybe Martians will be $10,000 per gram:) As long as gas isn't $200 per liter Then I'll send you some Dutch tulip bulbs to start a garden. Have a cup of Earl Grey and reminisce about when a good marketer could painfully break even buying and selling meteorites. Meteorites are not rarer than antiques. They are not rarer than anything that can be described as unique. There are a lot of unique things out there. They are rocks with a great story. And we do just love them. Money and love don't always mix well, though. Sometimes when it rains it pours and when it is dry, it's parched as a bone. Speculating about speculating is quite a spectacle, economists are never wrong! The problem is when they really start believing what they say...and convince everyone else that forward looking statements in 10-K's are sure things ... and that 8-K's don't happen... Best wishes, Doug Above is fictitious scenario. No claims are made nor is it the intention to create expectations of truth. The future is unpredictable. Scenario planning is simply a useful tool to understand and manage risks. - Original Message - From: Martin Altmann [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: 'David Weir' [EMAIL PROTECTED]; meteorite-list@meteoritecentral.com Sent: Thursday, October 05, 2006 6:44 AM Subject: AW: [meteorite-list] Murchison Price Difference Each meteorite has its time. A German collector told me, that shortly after the fall, he sent a letter to Murchison enquiring about the circumstances of this new fall. A while later a parcel came back, with nice wording and because in Murchison they were so delighted, that somebody from such a far country paid attention to that fall, they added a 50g stone for free as a little thank you. It is very simple. Meteorites are the rarest good on Earth. If from a locales the lion share is once distributed, the prices are getting higher. The pattern with new falls nowadays is always the same.

Hi Dave, Don and all, I have been forwarding these malicious attempts at fraud to ebay for the last couple of years. eBay will send you a form letter stating they are looking into it, then another email stating it isn't from them (or paypal) and have turned it over to the proper authorities. I somehow doubt that they are turning it over to investigators as there seems to be a never ending stream of these attempts over and over again. Seems like sooner or later they would be leery of trying to get information the same way after others were investigated or arrested. I've never been told that someone trying to attempt this type of fraud on me was sentenced or anything remotely like that. I would be willing to bet that I have forward more than a thousand such similar attempts and eBay will only send information that tells you how to avoid spoof emails. This is a serious thing that they shouldn't rest until they are able to improve things. Someone once said that eBay really only cares about making money. Nothing wrong with that but their customer service, rating system and prosecution of criminals that try to take advantage of their format is sadly lacking. Safest bet is always go directly to the official site (don't click on emails) and check emails and paypal accounts directly to avoid major trouble. --AL Mitterling Mitterling Meteorites www.Mitterling.com __ Meteorite-list mailing list Meteorite-list@meteoritecentral.com http://six.pairlist.net/mailman/listinfo/meteorite-list

Re: [meteorite-list] Anyone out there hunting the possible Coloradofall?
It isn't so much a question of where it fell as it is of where they fell. This event was basically a Peekskill clone, with debris fragmenting off for 75 or 100 miles. I've updated my report at http://www.cloudbait.com/science/fireball20061001.html to include a more accurate ground path, including details of what was falling off where. I've also listed some likely places to look, but as you note, the possible area is huge. I'd very roughly estimate the parent size to be on the order of 50 cm diameter, with a mass of several tons. That's quite sufficient to produce several kilograms of meteorites, especially given the extremely low speed (13.5 km/s) and virtually horizontal trajectory. Re: [meteorite-list]TUCSON AUCTION 2007
Greetings all Meteorite friends, I am starting to get inquiries, so, just the bare bones info on the Tucson Auction 2007: -- FOR BIDDERS: - Oct 31: On line Catalog with all information - Auction for 2007 is Sat, Feb. 3, same time, same place (VFW Hall on Beverly) lectures by SWMC from 6 to 7PM - All items will be on display by 6:30PM at the latest. - Bidding opens at 7:30PM sharp - Bidders MUST sign in in person no one can sign in for anyone else buyers will be processed afterwords in the order they signed in, HOWEVER, I am arranging to have 2 and preferably 3 people taking payment from buyers after the bidding and one person taking payment during the auction, itself, for those who only want one or two items and then wish to leave. This should get everyone done in 30 to 40% of the time previously required. More information will be provided when the on- line catalog goes up Oct. 31. FOR SELLERS: It is that time of year! Time to submit items for the Tucson Auction. As such, you are aware that each of the last several years the auction has grown in terms of numbers attending, quality of items submitted and fun had by all. In addition, there has been a consistent increase in profitability for placing quality items in the auction, therefore, I now accept only pieces of quality for the auction. This year I am looking to present an even more impressive array of quality meteorite specimens and a similarly more impressive on-line catalog. To do this, I need anyone wishing to offer items to submit your list and photographs of high quality items in a timely manor. Particularly popular are historic falls, whatever the size, and the rarer, the more action generated. (as per the excellent responses the last couple of years to the exemplary entries of Martin Horejsi). Super rare classifications, such as the submissions of Adam and Greg Hupe also bring a strong response and of course the super beautiful specimens, such as those submitted by Eric Twelker in recent years also earn strong responses from the bidding crowd. My overhead TRIPLED since last year (and is now more than 10 times my cost the first couple of years), but I am determined to continue to attract the highest quality material so, in an attempt to keep everyone's costs at a minimum, I am continuing to keep the commission for auction sales at only 10% under the following conditions: People submitting an items by Oct. 15 - this includes high quality digital photos of their items. Furthermore, this 10% fee is reserved for items submitted for the on line catalog by Oct. 15th AND brought to the auction by the seller between 5 and 6:30 pm the day of the auction (Sat, Feb.3, 2007). There will be no exceptions. People bringing items into the auction after 6:30 PM will be automatically be charged 15% of sale price (even if they made the on line catalog deadline of Oct. 15). Therefore, please be sure to sign your contract prior to 6:30 PM. People giving me their items to bring for them (whether at the show or via mail) will pay a 20% commission. People submitting items for the catalog after Oct. 15 will be charged 15% commission and 20% if they fail to deliver the items at the auction by 6:30 PM. All submissions which are accepted by Oct. 15 will receive free advertising in the on line auction catalog. Submissions after that date are negotiable. Last minute submissions (the day of the auction) will be charged 20% if accepted and those submitted after 6:30 PM the day of the auction will be charged 25%. Day of auction submissions must be of the highest possible quality to gain acceptance. Any and all submissions at any time are subject to approval based on quality and having a low or no minimum bid. There will never be a hidden reserve on any item in my auctions. Since payment by credit card has become common at the auction, US sellers will be mailed full payment within 10 days of the auction. If payment is needed before that time, this needs to be negotiated in advance. Overseas sellers will be paid immediately after the auction or in their rooms the next day if they are at Inn Suites unless they have a particularly high priced item that sells by credit card. This is also an option for US sellers who have a dealer room at Inn Suites at which they want to meet me. Payment the night of the auction should be arranged in advance and is discouraged unless circumstances absolutely require it. Besides the credit card payments, this is to make for a shorter night and in that respect, I am working on having 2 or 3 people to accept payment from buyers after the bidding closes and one person to accept payment during the auction from bidders who were there for only one or two items and who want to leave after their purchase. This should dramatically streamline

Re: [meteorite-list] Paypal Hackers WARNING!!!
Hi, As much as it pains me to defend the eBay eMpire, they do DO something about crooks who think eBay is deaf, dumb, and blind. Some months ago, I bought a used DVD from an eBay seller with thousands of feedbacks, 99+% positive, paid with PayPal. Got the usual post-sale messages, including a note from the seller that he would ship within two days. About three days later, I got an unsolicited email from PayPal telling me I should immediately go to their site and make a claim against the seller for the return of my money. No reason given. A check of eBay showed that seller had utterly vanished; no record of them. I filed the claim, and in two weeks, the money was back in my PayPal account. I have no idea what happened or why. I just know that eBay/PayPal came out of the blue and remedied a problem I didn't even know existed. I hadn't even expected the DVD to arrive yet. My guess is that he was selling stolen merchandise. Second example: One evening, very late at night, I was sifting through eBay Search and came across an expensive electronic item at a very, very low price that intrigued me enough to click on it. It was a just-started (15 minutes previously) one-day auction. Since the obvious sales strategy for such an item would be a longer auction, I clicked on View Seller's Other Items and found 110 one-day auctions for items with retail costs from $4000 and up, all to be shipped by Free FedEx 2-Day Air from a named East Coast US city and all starting at $79. Most of them would have cost more than that to ship. I looked at the seller's feedback history. Years long, 100% positive. The problem was that all he'd ever sold was used children's clothing and he was located in the Isle of Lewis, in the Hebrides, off the west coast of Scotland. There was, to put it mildly, a mis-match there. I deduced a hijacked identity by somebody who was fencing a truckload of high-end electronics, possibly also hijacked. Several items were photographed sitting on the tailgate of a big truck. I emailed the seller (to the off-eBay email address he gave in the auctions) with a naive querry about one of the auctions: is this item new? used? refurbished? In five minutes, I got a reply from the seller offering a Buy It Now price of $1000, to be paid as soon as possible by Western Union money order. I was already typing up all these findings as I made them, as a text file, so I immediately sent it to whatever generic address on eBay that says to report possible fraud. I doubted that they'd get to it that night; maybe in the morning... About 10 minutes later I went back to look at that auction again. It was closed. All those auctions were closed, and the rest of the page was filled with various warnings saying NOT to communicate with a seller outside of the eBay system, NOT to use Western Union or other instant pay systems to pay for items, especially when solicited to do so by the seller. In all, these 110 auctions lasted for less than an hour on eBay. Was I the first to notice them? Or the 100th? Had eBay already found them? For whatever reason, eBay's performance was excellent. Their response time was measured in minutes, not hours, not days. HOWEVER, they do not talk about what they do! Or how they do it, or even admit that they do anything beyond a bland statement that they make all possible effort. The often-expressed sentiment that they don't care and don't do anything is just not correct. They just don't brag about it. Hi, Rob, The auction closed without a bid. Pluto didn't sell! Well, they say the real estate market is getting soft... If you squat on Pluto, I suspect you'll still be firmly bum-welded to the Ninth Planet when the first Survey Team arrives in the next century! By then, you'll likely be glad to be evicted. You can buy land on Mars. But this is the first time I've seen an entire planet up for sale! Apparently the seller is not enterprising enough to parcel the planet up into lots like the Moon and Mars sellers and sell the planet piecemeal. There's a lot more money to be made by subdividing! Pluto has 17,950,000 square kilometers, almost twice the area of Europe or the US; it's well worth subdividing. The text of the auction doesn't mention Charon, but since it's shown in one of the pictures, I assume it's included in the sale. It's a bargain price! Sterling K. [meteorite-list] Large Asteroid Impact 200 Million Years Ago May Have Helped Dinosaurs Dominate The Earth
http://www.timesonline.co.uk/article/0,,2087-2394026,00.html T Rex was born in the Irish Sea, say scientists Roger Dobson The Sunday Times (United Kingdom) October 8, 2006 A HUGE meteorite that hit the Irish Sea and left a crater the size of Surrey may have helped giant dinosaurs come to dominate the planet, scientists have claimed. The researchers, who have analysed rock formations in the British Isles and France, believe the impact caused a tsunami that swamped large parts of Europe. They argue the meteor strike 200m years ago and others like it may have led to changes in the Earth's climate that caused some species to die out and others to dominate. It has long been argued that the extinction of the dinosaurs 65m years ago was caused by a massive asteroid strike. But scientists have wondered why dinosaurs, which had previously been relatively puny, began to develop into giants such as Tyrannosaurus rex about 200m years ago. One theory is that increases in carbon dioxide in the atmosphere led to bigger plants, which encouraged the development of bigger herbivores and then a growth in the size of predators. Other scientists claim an impact by a meteor may account for the relative suddenness of the change. There was a relatively sudden increase in the size of dinosaurs around the time we have dated this impact, said Michael Simms, curator of paleontology at the Ulster Museum in Belfast who led the research. This impact may well have been a factor in the changes that were going on. Simms' team found evidence of the shock probably caused by a meteorite, which may have been up to two miles wide and hit at 18,000mph, in data from boreholes and rock formations covering 100,000 square miles. They have not found the crater itself, but they believe the meteor may have hit what is now St George's Channel, between Pembrokeshire and the Irish coast. Much of western Britain and Ireland was under water at the time. The crater may have been more than 30 miles wide but would now be deeply buried beneath the sea floor. In the research, published in an academic journal, Simms looked for signs of impact rippling out from the crater in sediment that would have been affected by the shockwave. He analysed rock and borehole data and found the same unique pattern at every site he looked at, from Northern Ireland to Yorkshire and Dorset. Paul Barrett, a paleontologist at the Natural History Museum in London, said Simms' theory was an interesting idea. This is the first geological suggestion that there was an impact at this time. What we really want to back this up is a crater of the right age. __ Meteorite-list mailing list Meteorite-list@meteoritecentral.com http://six.pairlist.net/mailman/listinfo/meteorite-list
[meteorite-list] Astronomers Unite To Use Hawaii PS1 Telescope
http://www.ifa.hawaii.edu/info/press-releases/PS1_consortium/ Astronomers unite to use Hawaii telescope University of Hawaii Press Release October 3, 2006 Astronomers from several major research institutions around the world have signed an agreement with astronomers at the University of Hawaii to make use of a revolutionary new survey telescope on Haleakala on the island of Maui. The PS1 telescope is expected to discover billions of new stars, galaxies and solar system objects, including potential killer asteroids that threaten Earth. It will also produce the most detailed three-dimensional map of the Universe ever made. Over 30 world-renowned scientists and their graduate students have committed themselves to analyzing the unprecedented flood of data from PS1 over the next three and half years. We decided to recruit a number of top astronomers to join us in order to make the best use of this fantastic instrument, said University of Hawaii's Kenneth Chambers who, as project scientist, is responsible for carrying out the PS1 survey. We are delighted to have assembled a powerful consortium that includes the prestigious Max Planck Society in Germany, Harvard University, Johns Hopkins University, and the Las Cumbres Observatory in the USA, plus Durham University, University of, Edinburgh, and Queen's University Belfast in the United Kingdom, said Rolf Kudritzki, director of UH's Institute for Astronomy. The PS1 Science Consortium will contribute about $10 million to cover the cost of operating the telescope in Hawaii. Pan-STARRS is the next critical step in mapping the Universe. Our scientists are eagerly awaiting the first data for a large range of astronomical projects, said Harvard Professor of Cosmology John Huchra. The PS1 telescope has been developed by astronomers at the University of Hawaii. It is the first stage of the Panoramic Survey Telescope and Rapid Response System (Pan-STARRS) project, which is the brainchild of IfA's Nick Kaiser. The telescope, which has a 71-inch diameter mirror, achieved first light in June this year. It is currently undergoing engineering tests and will become fully operational in 2007. It will soon be equipped with the world's largest digital camera, now under construction at the UH Institute for Astronomy's Manoa headquarters under the leadership of John Tonry. The camera will have 1.4 billion pixels--about 300 times as many as a typical commercial digital camera. [meteorite-list] Students Save Earth From Asteroid in Space Foundation Virtual Lab
http://news.spacefoundation.org/printable.cfm?releaseid=1911D92F-C675-47C1-AF067B503010DFCF FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Students save Earth from asteroid in Space Foundation virtual lab Space Foundation October 5, 2006 Contact: Stephanie Fibbs Manager, Communications Media Relations 719-576-8000 [EMAIL PROTECTED] COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (Oct. 5, 2006) This week the Space Foundation debuted Asteroid Challenge, Target: Earth, a virtual lab and video science education program featuring the real asteroid Apophis. Third grade students from Manitou Springs Elementary School in Colorado were the first class nationwide to participate in this interactive science program and use scientific methods in a virtual lab to save our planet from destruction by Apophis, now on a path that could bring it dangerously close to colliding with Earth in 2036. The release of the lab follows the Oct. 3 premiere of NOVA scienceNow on PBS, which also addressed near-Earth asteroids, including Apophis. Dr. Neil deGrasse Tyson is both the host of NOVA scienceNow and featured in Asteroid Challenge, Target: Earth. Tyson is a Space Foundation board member, astrophysicist, and director of the Hayden Planetarium in the Rose Center for Earth and Space at the American Museum of Natural History in New York City. Scientists tell us the asteroid Apophis could pose a real threat to Earth, said Space Foundation Senior Vice President of Education and Workforce Development Dr. Patricia Arnold. 'Asteroid Challenge, Target: Earth' engages the next generation of scientists, mathematicians, and engineers who will be responsible for developing and implementing an effective solution to this real life situation and problem. This virtual lab is an educational and fun program that has relevance to students while improving their science and math skills. Using the virtual lab, students study asteroid composition and orbital mechanics and conduct virtual experiments to determine the trajectory of Apophis and how to divert it away from Earth's orbit, choosing from among such options as exploding it, attaching a solar sail to push it away, and using a gravitational tugboat method to pull it out of harm's way. Manitou Springs Elementary School third grade teacher and Space Foundation Teacher Liaison Christi Marquardt led her class in the nationwide debut of this interactive science program Wednesday, Oct 4. Created in collaboration with SpaceClass, the virtual lab uses the excitement of space to teach students essential concepts of science and math. Asteroid Challenge, Target: Earth is available online at http://Education.SpaceFoundation.org/Apophis. The Space Foundation has trained more than 40,000 teachers since 1986 through its Summer Institute graduate courses and national conferences. RE: [meteorite-list] Paypal Hackers WARNING!!!
Hi List, Strongly agree with Mark. The Services (Ebay, Paypal, etc..) have a strict hands off approach to this kind of fraud. They are protecting their interests and provide nothing but a bunch of lip service against these scams, with emphasis as to what You should do to protect yourself against being ripped off. I run a systems security business in MA., and I can tell you first hand that you will never get any satisfaction from pursuing the service providers when you get scammed. The best protection is education and attention to the age old advise that starts with: If it appears to good to be true. This kind of stuff has been going on ever since print could be published. Now, with identity protected sourcing in a ubiquitous electronic sales media, there is no one to protect you except yourself. Buying on the internet is a gamble. A calculated risk assessment should be done any time you want to deal there. There is one good piece of buying advice, if you have the option. If your seller accepts an American Express card, then by all means use that over anything else. They protect you, the buyer, more than any other financial organization out there, even if your card gets compromized. (In fact, if you use AMEX on PAYPAL and have an issue, go directly to AMEX and forget the Paypal runaround.) I'm sorry to inform you I was called by a detective who got scant little help from ebay on building a case against a formerly good and then went bad seller. The case was opened by a ripped off buyer, not ebay, and was started in Montana and not So Cal where the seller had been.
