[meteorite-list] power cuts across most of Eastern Europe

2006-11-05 Thread Jose Campos

Hi List,
Just to let you know that last night Germany, Italy, France and Spain were
it my a massive power outing - in same places, it lasted only about 90
minutes. According to Sky News, cold weather and lack of supply are blamed
for the worst blackout to hit western Europe in 30 years.

Hi Dean and other Listees in MUNICH!

I hope that this power outage did not affect much your gathering there! Have
a good time!

All the best,
José Campos

[meteorite-list] OT: meteorites and other interests

2006-11-05 Thread drtanuki
Dear List,
I am writing to find other persons on this list that
may have overlapping interests.
Since I was trained as an
archaeologist/anthropologist,paleontologist,
geologist, impact geologist, and paleo/botanist I have
many interests beyond meteorites.
I study, of course, meteorites and impactites,
especially tektites.
But, I also collect and study textiles, Chinese and
ancient coins, ancient glass and glass beads, tribal
music, tribal religious objects, SE Asian artifacts,
language, rocks (cherts), minerals, fossils (dinosaur,
mammal, plant), plants, and extant snails, woods,
ambers and extant tree saps, soils, sands, diamonds,
kimberlites, extant animals and new species, incense,
teas, spices, local foods, and many other things.
I travel, and have traveled extensively worldwide,
and always enjoy learning.
If anyone on this list has an overlapping interest
with one or more of mine please contact me off list.
I am always willing to assist anyone with questions or
happy to learn about other people`s experiences.
  Thank you. Sincerely, Dirk Ross...Tokyo

Dear Kevin,
I have viewed your photo. Most likely, 99% ,it is
not a meteorite. Most meteorites are not flat or
shaped like your rock. Is it magnetic, heavier than
the average earth rock, do you see any shiny metal
grains on a cut or ground surface? Can you provide any
close-up images of a broken surface and the external
surface?
I am sure there will be others from the list asking
similar questions and they will also give you their
observations.
If you want I can or someone on the list can examine
your rock for free IF you would like. Best,Dirk

Hi!

Can you give more descriptions? Estimate
density? Does it attract a rare earth magnet? Is there any crust on
the edges?

From first blush, this does not resemble any
meteorite I am familiar with but it is too difficult to tell just from this
image.. It appears that there are many vesicles which is not common at all
in meteorites. The picture looks like sponge toffee or brown
pumice.

[meteorite-list] Dawn Journal - October 29, 2006

2006-11-05 Thread Ron Baalke

http://dawn.jpl.nasa.gov/mission/journal_10_06.asp

Dawn Journal
Dr. Marc D. Rayman
October 29, 2006

Dear Dawnvironments,

The Dawn spacecraft is in space! Well, not quite, but it is getting a
taste of the space environment courtesy of the team preparing it for its
mission.

Although the individual components of the spacecraft have already been
tested, the point of the testing in Orbital Sciences Corporation's
Environmental Test Facility is to verify that the fully assembled
spacecraft will survive the rigors of launch and be able to fulfill its
ambitious mission of exploration in deep space.

When Dawn is on the launch pad at Cape Canaveral and during the brief
(but exciting!) trip from there to space, many radio signals between
systems on the ground and between ground systems and the rocket will
impinge upon it. Some of the tests are designed to verify that these
signals will have no adverse effects on the spacecraft. Other tests show
that Dawn's electronics do not produce signals that might interfere with
these other systems.

As one illustration of the importance of such tests, consider the
scientists eager for Dawn's intimate portrait of the enormous asteroids
Ceres and Vesta, the team members who have invested years of their lives
in creating this spaceship and the means to use it to explore distant
worlds, all people who thirst for greater knowledge of our solar system
and the thrill of discovery, and taxpayers who make it possible. One may
reasonably expect members of all of those groups to find it unsatisfying
if any of Dawn's electronics produced signals that accidentally
activated the rocket's self-destruct system. (That system is designed to
be commanded with radio signals transmitted by range safety in the event
of a serious malfunction during ascent.) Similarly, if Dawn's radio
emissions interfered with the rocket's reception of range safety's
self-destruct command, the legions of Dawnophiles throughout the Milky
Way Galaxy, and the even greater number elsewhere, would no longer give
this project their loyal support.

In addition to testing Dawn's compatibility with other systems,
engineers are testing its self-compatibility. It is essential to verify
that none of the subsystems, including the radio used for interplanetary
communications, emits electromagnetic radiation that might interfere
with other subsystems.

Of course, Dawn's designers and builders were well aware of these and
other concerns, and they have methods to make the probe satisfy the many
associated requirements, but only through testing may we be confident
that the work was successful.

With the completion of testing in the electromagnetic
interference/electromagnetic compatibility facility, the spacecraft will
be prepared for a series of mechanical tests. For the rocket's control
systems to remain stable with Dawn perched at the top, it must be
accurately balanced and must meet certain criteria for how stable it is
when it is spun, and the next set of tests will help prepare for that.
(As we will discuss in an upcoming log in more detail, the spacecraft
will spin at about 50 rpm during a portion of the time it is on the
rocket.) Also on Dawn's agenda during November are deafening noise and
powerful shaking that will show its readiness for the ride to space.
Sensors to measure the movements of certain parts of the spacecraft will
be installed (after the balance measurements are complete) for these tests.

As we know from earlier logs, between many of these environmental tests,
other tests will be conducted on the spacecraft to ensure that its
systems remain intact, undamaged by previous environments and ready for
the next. At each stage, the health of the spacecraft will be verified.

Dawn's busy autumn includes still another kind of test. Now that it is a
complete spacecraft, it is scheduled for tests of its responses to many
of the complex sets of commands that will be sent to it while far from
Earth. These mission scenario tests exercise not only the spacecraft
but also many of the software systems used by mission control. While
this testing is invaluable, it does have some noteworthy limitations.
The spacecraft cannot respond now to all of these commands, because, for
example, it cannot rotate itself while on Earth, it cannot see stars to
establish its orientation, and the ion propulsion system can thrust only
in vacuum. (The ion propulsion system will be operated briefly with the
spacecraft in a vacuum chamber early next year.) Sophisticated
simulators connected to the spacecraft compensate for these and other
limitations of the terrestrial test program.

Important progress has already been made in these tests. The team has
demonstrated that commands can move smoothly through the complex path
from mission control at JPL, to the spacecraft's main computer and then
to its engineering and science subsystems, and that responses can flow
back to mission control, to the Dawn Science Center at UCLA, and to the
institutions

Cornell statement concerning recommendations of
National Science Foundation Senior Review

ITHACA, N.Y. - In response to the Senior Review report presented to the
National Science Foundation today, Joseph Burns, Cornell vice provost for
physical sciences and engineering, issued the following statement:

The Senior Review report released today recommends significant budget
reductions at all NSF-owned observatories, including Arecibo Observatory,
which Cornell University manages. Cornell supports the NSF's overall plan
to find funds to carry out new initiatives, but we are disappointed with
some of the Senior Review's specific recommendations into the next decade.
We remain dedicated to the core scientific programs of the Arecibo
Observatory and, accordingly, we are pleased that the review recognizes
the facility's significant contributions today and its potential for
important discoveries well into the next decade. Our staff will be working
with our astronomy community to identify cost savings as recommended by
the Senior Review. And by refocusing our facility's priorities over the
next several months, in consultation with our visiting and users
committees, we are confident that Arecibo's remarkable research and
educational programs will be kept strong into 2011 and beyond. During
these next few years we will be collaborating with our stakeholders -
astronomers, planetary scientists, atmospheric physicists and educators -
to assure that Arecibo Observatory remains a leader in astronomical
research and scientific outreach.

Located in northwestern Puerto Rico, the Arecibo Observatory hosts the
305-meter diameter antenna, the world's largest radio-radar telescope, and
the Angel Ramos Foundation Visitor and Educational Facility. Each year well
over 100,000 visitors go to see the facility, and more than 250 scientists
from 150 universities and colleges use the Arecibo Observatory to sense the
distant reaches of the Universe, to scrutinize threatening asteroids as
they hurtle past Earth, and to probe the Earth's ionospheric properties.

Re: [meteorite-list] Looking for Nikon F2 with DE-1 prism

2006-11-05 Thread MexicoDoug
Hello to all, I have been looking for several years for a Nikon F2 (the
expensive DE-1, DP-12 prisms would be rewarded well, but DP-1 is still
fine), and could settle even for a Nikon FE as well.

Since the camera is useful for longer exposures - my area of interest, I'll
be forgiving on the shutter accuracy or metering, but am not interested in
dented body cameras or thise that have be dropped.

It sure would be nice to get one in good shape, as the reason for wanting
this fine non-battery guzzler old manual camera is because it happens not to
vibrate much and has all the manual functions I need.

I, too can pay with meteorites (and maybe different ones), cash, or maybe
even a contemporary old manual Canon AE-1 in superb condition for which I
have lenses and the autowinder.

Of course, as Don mentions, this list is a nice place to go looking. I have
fought off the pay with meteorite post-temptation for astronomy items wanted
in the past after thinking about it a lot. I always refrained due to my
interpretation of what is on topic when it comes to commerce and relevance
and the Meteorite List. Don's post defined this gray area for me, for this
need, which is very high on my night sky photography list including for
meteor work. I have a US address for the next week we can use and I rarely
get an opportunity to receive items like this in Mexico.

Best wishes,
Doug (please email me if you want a motivated camera customer!)
PS Don, good luck to you too.

Hi List. I am looking for decent taken care of older model Nikon F2 with
the
DE-1 metering prism and any accessories such like any lenses and a shutter
release cable and or C screen. I am looking for this camera for use of
astrophotography. I am willing to pay cash or trade a piece or pieces from
my meteorite collection or both, however way we can work something out. I
have seen these cameras of course on Ebay but will put my trust better in
someone on the List that knows first hand the working condition of the
camera. There must be someone out there that can help, maybe has one or
knows someone that can hook up a fellow meteorite collector on this.
Contact
me off list at [EMAIL PROTECTED] and hopefully we can both walk
away with something we can use or need.
 Thank you.
 Sincerely
 Don Merchant IMCA # 0960
