Hi Bernd & all,

Here's the page we put together a couple of years or so back. It includes
one of your great thin section photos showing the fine-grained lithology.

Steve Arnold wrote:

"The nicest nwa I have ever had the pleasure to put into
my collection, NWA 1685, came into my collection today.
A 197 gram individual from Roman Jirasek."

NWA 1685 is truly a stunning meteorite. Two individuals weighing
131 grams and 251.3 grams (cut in two halves by Dean) + two thin
sections (also from Dean) are in my collection.

Steve Arnold also wrote: "the great looking black fusion crust"

This meteorite's fusion crust even has a shiny, slightly "wet"
look as if it was the crust of an achondrite!

And furtheron:

"This is one that will go down as one of the best
looking NWA to ever come out of Northwest Africa."

Maybe you are right because here is what I wrote
about one of my thin sections:

Both in hand specimen as in thin section there are areas that are absolutely
featureless, devoid of any chondrules or other inclusions, and look almost
achondritic. The view under crossed polars is breathtaking: While there are
chondrules and mineral components of various sizes in a fine-grained, almost
opaque groundmass, the featureless clast in my TS shows an incredible, equi-
granular structure without any fine-grained, interstitial groundmass as if
it
had been "blown" or "swept" away. Instead, hundreds and hundreds of colorful
little crystalline pearls (of olivine and pyroxene) that look as if seen
from
a distance.

Now, 197 grams, ... Aha! I am pretty sure this is one of Dean's BL's (B =
black
i.e. black crust, L because Dean thought it was an L or an maybe an LL
chondrite
and if it is, I also know who the original owner was: Someone whose first
name
is John ;-) How do I know? Well, I painstakingly recorded the names of those
who purchased a piece and were willing to let me know. Including myself, I
still
have the names of at least 33 "original" owners + all the mails we exchanged
;-)

A funny comment from Dean may suffice:

"Boy I have had a busy day. Almost all of that meteorite is sold.
31 of 37 offerings are gone. I must have seriously underpriced it."

Best wishes,

Bernd

.. oh, by the way, its brecciation is terrific! Unfortunately it is still
provisional but it is one that should really be classified because it does
deserve a number!

"The AGU abstract adequately and interesting explains the characteristics in

I agree. After you understand the "fossil" aspect, it is easier to "see" the
meteorite. Had the first weathering process not been so hard on the
meteorite, I think we would have a lot more chondrulessuch as there is
in the lighter material.

"A public thanks to those owners of the various masses of this fossil
meteorite who donated material for its in-depth study."

Once again I have to agree with David. It is interesting to note, that if
not for the moroccans breaking the meteorite up and it getting classified
several times the way it did, the true classification might have been a
never known (?).

reported by local villagers and traces of forest fire
can be seen on the site. Air traffic officials said
that no aircraft were scheduled to fly in the region
at the time of the crash and no air vessels were
missing.

A group formed of police investigators,
representatives of the Transport Prosecutors Service
and representatives of the aircraft safety watchdog
Rosavianadzor has started to the site of the crash

Re: [meteorite-list] Stan's NWA 2965 EL6/7

2006-12-02 Thread David Weir
Hello List,

After reading the AGU abstract posted by Greg, I certainly think the
investigators have made huge progress in arriving at a consensus on the
correct classification of this 1+ ton mass, previously described as an
igneous aubrite, a highly equilibrated EL6/7, and an En-metachondrite,
and, after analyzing the NWA 2828 stone, was considered to represent
multiple meteorite falls. The AGU abstract adequately and interesting
explains the characteristics in light of it being an EL3 fossil
meteorite with primary, unequilibrated components, with a very sparse
abundance of chondrules.

However, with less than 5 vol% chondrules, how can it be related to the
typical EL chondrites with much higher chondrule percentages of 60-80
vol%? This is still a pretty strange object. At the very least I would
think it should be given an EL3-Anom label. After all, Maralinga was
primarily given its anomalous label because of its higher than normal
chondrule/matrix ratio, although I think its 50 vol% compared to the
typical 15 vol% of typical CKs pales by comparison. The only chondrite
with less than 5 vol% is the CI group (much less than 1 vol%). How did
chondrules become sorted out of the matrix in this one? I await more
scientific insights on this.

A public thanks to those owners of the various masses of this fossil
meteorite who donated material for its in-depth study.

Re: [meteorite-list] New Kansas Meteorite!

2006-12-02 Thread MARK BOSTICK
Hello Everyone,

Thanks for your comments on our latest recovery. We seem to be averaging
about 1.5 a year. Our longterm goal has been to add 10 new Kansas
meteorites to the books.

Moni asked "When will you find out how old it is?"

I am not sure. The University of Washington is going to do some further
testing on the meteorite, perhaps to answer this question (?). If that is
not what they are going to be doing, then we would be willing to donate a
small sample for isotope testing.

Nice ideal on a quiz Bernd. Since the meteorite seems fresher then Park
Forest finds a month after it's fall, I will guess 2 weeksfrom fall to
reported recovery date. If others would like to make guesses I will keep a
record and see if I can get the group to give the closest estimate (or
guessimate) a free micro mount.

Moni also asked, "Why all those great meteorites in Kansas?" California is
not short of its great meteorites, plus it is much easier to make finds
there. One problem with Kansas is that the land is broken up into thousands
of pieces. Unlike the SW, we can't just roam and hunt.

But just imagine, if Kansas still had its original borders which went to the
Rockies...we could claim almost all the Colorado meteorites as well. Wonder
who I can blame for this travesty...General William Jackson Palmer (1836
-1908)

As John observed, the recovery was made with the help of one of the Shaw
brothers, whose work here in the plains is nothing short of amazing.

At this time none of the meteorite has been approved for sale, and if the
history of our other recoveries are good examples, very little will be
offered to collectors. This stone is so beautiful it would be a shame to cut
it up. I will try to let Jerry answer any other e-mails and not be a list
hog;^)

Thanks Alex - glad you cleared that up - of course - this is what I was
sort of meaning - a place for good prices, honest materials and accredited
dealers in a safe forum.
Of course, a bargain is exactly that - a bargain (or, as you said it wouldn
t be a bargain, but the actual price!)
I guess I was just thinking aloud about an alternative sales place to
Fleabay - not to take away from dealers' sites and thier customer base, of
course, just an alternative to eBay!

Dear Dave,

no bad intention, of course! What I just meant to say was: the price has to
be fair, a bargain may a bargain, but a bargain is not the LAW, it is the
EXCEPTION (...as else it would not be a "bargain" by definition..:-)). We
small little creatures on this very Earth all wish to survive some way or
the other, and everyone should have his/her little fortune, but when it
comes down to e.g. such a tiny little issue as aquiring a meteorite from
dealer xyz, the whole system of fairness of trade for ALL the participants
in a contract should still be active and workable for the future.

And btw: you will always find strange people in every market place, may they
be Big Brains from windy cities or odd Mars sellers from elsewhere. This is
what you can´t avoid even with a good intention of creating any new list...

Best wishes again,

Re: [meteorite-list] collecting; and a question

2006-12-02 Thread VisualThinker7
1.First the question. Since I have thousands of small rocks I've
collected for use in my art, I think I should get a decent magnet and check to
see
if any of them react.
Can anyone tell me where to buy a good magnet, and what kind (manufacturer,
strength, size etc.)?? I believe the strength of a magnet is measure in gauss,
but I may be wrong. Does anyone pay attention to that? or is there just some
particular size and weight of magnet you use?

2. I forgot to mention my small collection of paper currency.
CSA notes brought back from the Civil War by my great great grandfather (he
was in a New York regiment).
And Third Reich notes of various denominations brought back by my father
after his journey through France, Belgium and Germany, 62 years ago.
Also, some Woodstock / 60's memoribilia. (programs, zap comix, photo sleeves
from 45's).

Hi all,
I have a slice of this meteorite and some of the rare chondrules are not
"ghosts" at all but true pyroxene melt chondrules.

[meteorite-list] Nicest looking NWA I have ever seen: NWA 1685

2006-12-02 Thread bernd . pauli

The view under crossed polars is breathtaking: While there are
chondrules and mineral components of various sizes in a fine-grained, almost
opaque groundmass, the featureless clast in my TS shows an incredible, equi-
granular structure without any fine-grained, interstitial groundmass as if it
had been "blown" or "swept" away. Instead, hundreds and hundreds of colorful
little crystalline pearls (of olivine and pyroxene) that look as if seen from
a distance.

Now, 197 grams, ... Aha! I am pretty sure this is one of Dean's BL's (B = black
i.e. black crust, L because Dean thought it was an L or an maybe an LL chondrite
and if it is, I also know who the original owner was: Someone whose first name
is John ;-) How do I know? Well, I painstakingly recorded the names of those
who purchased a piece and were willing to let me know. Including myself, I still
have the names of at least 33 "original" owners + all the mails we exchanged ;-)

Congratulations to Jerry, Mark and the rest of the meteorite enthusiasts in
Kansas. This is evidence that meteorites can still be found if folks just
spend some time out in the field. The story makes me wonder if some
unsuspecting farmer lobbed the space rock over the fence to get it out of
his field!

[meteorite-list] New Kansas Meteorite (Quiz) and H4 chondrites

2006-12-02 Thread bernd . pauli
Hello Jerry, Mark, Greg and List,

What a beautiful H4 chondrite!
Gorgeous thumbprinted fusion crust!
Sincere congratulations to all those involved!

Moni asked: "When will you find out how old it is?"
This surely sounds like an invitation to another quiz ;-)

So my take is: it is so fresh that it must have fallen within the last 4 months!

Well, speaking of H4 chondrites:

There are 17 different H4 chondrites and 5 H4 thin sections in my collection.
While most of them are inherently chondrule-rich, one of them is a real "sea
of chondrules" - it is a NWA from Greg Hupé that is chockful of chondrules of
different types with radiating pyroxene chondrules slightly more abundant than
the other chondrule types. With a TKW of only 118 gr, there were only a few
specimens on EBay and I am glad I purchased a complete slice and an endcut of
NWA 4443. Maybe other collectors who acquired something of that H4 would like
to "chime in" and tell us about their specimens.

H4-ly yours,

Bernd
