Someone with experience reading the bottom optically without disturbing the surface layers can quickly narrow down the search area for magnetic, electronic and sub bottom surface 3D sonar imaging. It can be very rewarding finding something efficiently, especially in a lake. Im just a rookie Meteorite hunter and new to the list, but have been working on the bottom for 37 years. I hope the list will create a discussion on this topic if you think it is valid, seems to be a lot of knowledge and experience here. Our ability to find things on the bottom improves constantly. I have a map of the debris field I would say there are finds to be made in the lakes. My question is, at what rate can we expect them to corrode? I've seen metal dissolve in days and others that are hundreds of years on the bottom. Chemical composition of bottom type, metal object and water, also temperatures how deep in the bottom all are factors. Do we have a source for lake data? What say you list? Rick what is the biggest piece of this known nad what is it worth in U$D? are there any pix of it? if so, where? all i have seen are dirt-like pieces not big enough to fingerfondle (10g or more). is it worth a dive on the lake to find more? __ Meteorite-list mailing list Meteorite-list@meteoritecentral.com http://six.pairlist.net/mailman/listinfo/meteorite-list -- Want to start your own business? [meteorite-list] METEORITES FOR TRADE - all classified - FOR SURVEYING EQUIPMENT/ ARCHAEOLOGICAL BOOKS
List, I am interested in acquiring a sub-meter GPS unit of any brand, whether cumbersome (backpack, antenna) or handheld (preferably Ashtech, Trimble, or Thales), as well as books on California, Northwest, Great Basin, and Russian prehistoric archaeology. The specimens include many achondrites, including low TKW specimens. I am a student of geoarchaeology, and I conduct independent fieldwork in Southern California. I cannot afford to keep my collection, purchased from 2003 - 2005, if pursuing such activities. Although my current tools are effective, I must refrain from identifying objects and features in undisturbed contexts with consumer-grade GPS technology, even with 3m of horizontal error. Theodolites and accurate GPS units will permit x,y,z measurement without the problem of extending lines great distances in the wind - problematic if depths have differences 10cm. I have no income at the moment. I don't need GIS/CAD software or a computer (already covered). Back and current issues of journals such as Geoarchaeology and Journal of California and Great Basin Anthropology are accepted. Surveying equipment (theodolites, clinometers,a Brunton pocket transit) and soil sampling equipment, as well as a decent scale of 2kg capacity are acceptable. -Thaddeus Besedin My collection is not limited to specimens on this list (at least twice this quantity remain unlisted), and prices are available upon request: ACHONDRITES: Millbillillie eucrite .7 g crusted part slice Dhofar 300 metamorphosed eucrite breccia TKW: 624g 3.26 g part slice NWA 1646 cumulate eucrite S5 W1 TKW: 259g .834 g part slice, part slice .8 g NWA 1109 polymict eucrite 0.8 g part slice NWA 1282 Howardite TKW: 21g 0.618 g, .74g part slices Pena Blanca Aubrite .432 g part slice NWA 1110 picritic (olivine-phyric basaltic) shergottite 0.621g individual ORDINARY CHONDRITES: NWA 1930 LL3 S2 W2 3.98g slice NWA 1945 LL3 end cut 2.322g S1 W2 NWA 1283 (provisionally classified by Rubin at UCLA as an LL3) L3.7 1.5 g slice S1 TKW 44g absolutely stunning! [meteorite-list] Santa Vitoria do Palmar - my Christmas Meteorite
Hello All, Santa Vitoria do Palmar is a truly beautiful meteorite and it has many a story to tell part of which can be found on pages 12-16 of the latest issue of our Meteorite magazine. Thank you very much, Svend! What a pity the pictures are only black white but, a color version is available on Svend's homepage! Santa Vitoria do Palmar is my very special Christmas meteorite, and here's the story: Well, not very many list members know that I needed surgery last November 27th. A tumor had to be removed (the 2-inch scar still itches and pinches) and while my Pauline and I were at the hospital waiting for the pathological results, we were quite understandably a bit nervous ... would it be malignant, would it be benign? I tried not to brood too much and so I decided to take my Meteorite magazine with me and read Svend's article while waiting for the results. I was soon taken up so intensely that I almost forgot to worry about the impending results. The result was: b e n i g n ! ... and so I decided I would like to own at least a small slice of this meteorite that I was reading about while waiting at the hospital. Svend's large slice on EBay was a bit too large for my budget (although it was and still is worth every cent the winnning bidder paid for it!) but I was lucky enough to acquire a 7.9-gram slice from Anne Black (she still has a 7.0-gram slice and two really large ones if you would like to own a piece of this beauty). Now, I think I really don't have to tell you why this 7.9-gram part slice rightly is my very special Christmas meteorite and will never leave my meteorite collection as long as I live! Thank you, Anne, and, to all listees and listoids: thanks for being able to share with all of you - near and far - Merry Christmas and a very happy Holiday Season wherever you are. Re: [meteorite-list] tips on transporting meteorites.
Graham, With heightened airport security, you may have trouble with carry-ons. I tried bringing a couple of good sized Campo del Cielo irons in that way. No problems in Argentina or Chile, but when I hit the USA they caused great consternation. The security screeners couldn't find anything about meteorites in their reference manuals, but they finally decided that big lumps of iron were dangerous weapons, and forced me to check them (which became my third piece of checked luggage and cost an additional $80!). Happy Holidays to all of the members of the Meteorite list. I hope that everyone gets a space rock in their stocking and that this winter season is good to you all. In the spirit of giving I would like to do something that will benefit many people for years to come in this wonderful science we call Meteoritics. Many of you are aware of the Cascadia Meteorite Laboratory here at Portland State University in Portland, Oregon. I have made a commitment to help support this facility. This is an opportunity to give back to the meteorite community. A great idea came to mind the other day to use my library collection as a vehicle to help raise funds for research and positions at the lab. So here is my offer; I am giving the entire library collection up for silent auction over the next week. The starting price will be $100,000.00; this is $50,000.00 less than I have ever offered it for before. The collection is huge. Below is a description of what is included. I can send pictures and a catalog to anyone interested. There are a number of extra publications that are just going to be thrown in. Here is the catch and some might call it the really attractive part of this offering. The winning bidder will produce a cashiers check for the high bid amount written to Portland State University. This amount will be entirely deductible from your taxes for this year or for the next five years if you choose to amortize this amount over the allowed years. Plus, you get the books! I realize that this may only appeal to a few individuals who are looking for a tax shelter or to a rare few who have hit the big times in business these past few years. And I realize also that this opportunity only applies if you live in the U.S. So if this doesnt do the trick then I may consider breaking up the collection for the sake of the university and their commitment to produce new students for our beloved science and new discoveries for the World to share and benefit from. What do I getsatisfaction. I get to know that I made a lot of people happy. And the person or institution that gets these books will send good energy my way whenever a book is opened and learned from. So please, will you help me with this endeavor? Give it some thought and dig deep if you can. There are even a few of you business people who could buy this collection, take the deduction for your generous donation to the U. and sell off part or all of the collection to get your investment back and then some. Over the next week, you are invited to fly, drive or pedal your way here and flip through the collection in person. If you are a book worm like me then this is your Woody Allen Orgasmatron! I will be honored by your consideration and welcome your visit. Offered here is the entire Edwin Thompson Library Collection of books on meteorites and Tektites. This collection is probably the largest most complete collection in private hands in the World. The collection contains over 600 books. This count does not include some doubles for example; years ago the American Meteorite Laboratory had a number of H.H. Niningers book Find a Falling Star! 12 copies of this wonderful book were added to the collection. When Richard Norton first came out with his first edition of Rocks from Space a case was added to the collection. In addition there are multiple copies of Bagnalls book The Meteorite and Tektite Collectors Handbook and Povenmires book Tektites, A Cosmic Paradox. These extra copies will be part of the sale package even though not counted. There are copies of Moldavite by Bouska and Meteority, Meteoritica and Principles of Meteoritics by Krinov as well as Giant Meteorites. There is a set of Cohens Meteoriten Kunde and Von Buchwalds Book of Irons, the three volume set. The collection includes copies of classics by Mason, Farrington, Wasson, Moore, Brown, Merrill, Lockyer, Chapman, Chladni, Dodd, Prior, Ramdhor, Velikovsky, Von Homboldt, Wood, Yanai, Buchwald, LaPaz, Krinov, Haidinger, Keil, Gallant, Von Schreibers and many many more. There are over 35 first editions that are signed and inscribed. The collection includes over 200 very rare and important specific research papers, paper bound books and catalogs from various authors from the 1800s and early 1900s. There is a complete collection of all publications of the British Catalog of Meteorites all the way back to Hey and even earlier to G.T. Prior in 1923. The collection includes numerous signed Nininger books. There are lots of wonderful surprises for example; a paper written by E.L. Krinov and inscribed and signed by Krinov to Brian Mason. There is a book signed by H.H. Nininger to friends in La Jolla, California, inside there is a Christmas card from Nininger thanking them for the Thanksgiving dinner earlier that year at which time the book was autographed. There are books on Tektites like Okeefes books Tektites and Their Origins from 1976 and Tektites from 1963. There are
