[meteorite-list] Large fireball over Arizona last night!
Hi everyone, I was too busy loading over 150 auctions last night to post this. There was a large fireball over northern Arizona last night. My sister saw it from Show Low at around ~7:15 pm I think. She said it was very large and green and looked to be heading to the west or southwest. An hour later Robert Ward called me excited, saying that while driving near Kingman, he saw the same fireball light up the sky. I just spoke to him again and he said that in Prescott, the fireball lit up the entire sky nearly like daylight through the clouds! Has anyone heard any other reports? [meteorite-list] [AD] Have a fix for annoying clicking sounds on Ads
Hello Everyone! I was informed today that our Banner Ads and rotating Classified Ads can cause a clicking noise each time they change. I was informed of this some months back but could never duplicate it on the 4 computers that I have. I was able to duplicate it today and yes it's truly annoying. The good news is I also have a fix. Windows has a setting under Sounds and Audio Devices that creates a click each time a new navigation is sensed. Unfortunately our Banner Ads and our rotating Classified Ads are picked up by Windows as a new event. We apologize to all of you who have been having to put up with this annoyance. I had turned my setting off years ago and never knew this was happening. There is no functional need, unless you suffer from blindness, for the click. The following tutorial will show you how to set the Start Navigation setting for Windows Explorer to None. http://www.meteorite-times.com/help/ Please always feel free to let me know of any issues. [meteorite-list] True Fakes: Scientists Make Simulated Lunar Soil
http://science.nasa.gov/headlines/y2006/28dec_truefake.htm True Fakes: Scientists make simulated lunar soil NASA Science News December 28, 2006 Dec. 28 , 2006: Life is tough for a humble grain of dirt on the surface of the Moon. It's peppered with cosmic rays, exposed to solar flares, and battered by micrometeorites--shattered, vaporized and re-condensed countless times over the billions of years. Adding insult to injury, Earthlings want to strip it down to oxygen and other elements for in situ resource utilization, or ISRU, the process of living off the land when NASA returns to the Moon in the not-so-distant future. But, as Robert Heinlein famously observed, the Moon is a harsh mistress. Living with moondust and striping it down may be trickier than anyone supposes. To find out how tricky, researchers would like to test their ideas for ISRU and their designs for lunar rovers on real lunar soil before astronauts return to the Moon. But there's a problem: We don't have enough real moondust to go around, says Larry Taylor, director of Planetary Geosciences Institute at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville. To run all the tests, we need to make a well-qualified lunar simulant. And not just a few bags will do. We need tons of it, mainly for working on technologies for diggers and wheels and machinery on the surface, adds David S. McKay, chief scientist for astrobiology at the Johnson Space Center (JSC). Taylor and McKay are lead members of a small group of self-styled lunatics whose careers have focused on lunar soil and rocks. They are among several consultants to NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center (MSFC), which manages the Lunar Regolith Simulant Development Program. Carole McLemore is the program manager at Marshall. Back in the 1990s, she explains, researchers used a lunar simulant called JSC-1 developed at JSC. But there is no more JSC-1 available. So, to get started, researchers at Marshall are working with the Astromaterials Research and Exploration Science office at Johnson to create a replica of the JSC-1 simulant: JSC-1A. It comes in three types based on grain size (fine, medium and coarse). MSFC has also begun work on more demanding simulants representing various locations on the Moon. Until the Apollo astronauts brought lunar soil samples to Earth during 1969-72, the belief was that the Moon's dry, airless environment left the soil largely undisturbed. Reality is much harsher. Micrometeorites, many smaller than a pencil point, constantly rain onto the surface at up to 100,000 km/hr (about 62,000 mph), chipping off materials or forming microscopic impact craters. Some melt the soil and vaporize and re-condense as glassy coats on other specks of dust. Impacts weld debris into agglutinates. Complicated interactions with the solar wind convert iron in the soil into myriads of nano-phase metallic iron grains just a few nanometers wide. These processes form the regolith -- Greek for stone blanket (litho + rhegos) -- covering the Moon's surface. What greets astronauts and spaceships is a complex material comprising sharp, abrasive, interlocking fragile glass shards and fragments, Taylor says. It grinds machinery and seals, and damages human lungs. Some of the stuff that got into the Apollo spacecraft was very finely ground, McKay said. Dust was everywhere and impossible to brush off. All the lunar astronauts had lung reactions to this dust, some more than others, like Harrison H. (Jack) Schmitt's lunar dust hay fever. The Apollo specimens are America's Crown Jewels and are doled out in ultra-small samples to scientists who can demonstrate that nothing else will do for high-value experiments. Renewed interest in lunar exploration in the late 1980s meant that lunar simulants were needed to test schemes for building structures on the Moon or for extracting oxygen and other materials. That led to JSC-1 in 1993, made of basaltic volcanic cinder cone deposits from a quarry near Flagstaff, AZ. The 25-ton lot -- distributed in 50-pound bags -- proved popular. We're totally out, but that's soon to be corrected, said McKay. MSFC has a Small Business Innovative Research (SBIR) contract with Orbitec of Madison, WI, to manufacture about 16 metric tonnes of three types of JSC-1A: 1 tonne of fines (delivered); 14 tonnes of moderate grains (being delivered); and 1 tonne of coarse grains (coming soon). The U.S. Geological Survey in Denver and the University of Colorado at Boulder -- key partners -- are checking the chemical, mineralogical, and geotechnical properties. MSFC is developing three new simulants. Two will represent mare and polar highlands regions. A third will represent the glassy, sharp, jagged edges of regolith that test the best of hardware and humans. But matching every location on the Moon would require large numbers of small, unique, expensive batches. Instead, we will develop root simulants and manufacture specific simulants from these, but also enable investigators to
[meteorite-list] NASA Mars Team Teaches Old Rovers New Tricks to Kick Off Year Four
http://www.jpl.nasa.gov/news/news.cfm?release=2006-152 NASA Mars Team Teaches Old Rovers New Tricks to Kick Off Year Four December 28, 2006 NASA's twin Mars rovers, nearing the third anniversary of their landings, are getting smarter as they get older. The unexpected longevity of Spirit and Opportunity is giving the space agency a chance to field-test on Mars some new capabilities useful both to these missions and future rovers. Spirit will begin its fourth year on Mars on Jan. 3 (PST); Opportunity on Jan. 24. In addition to their continuing scientific observations, they are now testing four new skills included in revised flight software uploaded to their onboard computers. One of the new capabilities enables spacecraft to examine images and recognize certain types of features. It is based on software developed for NASA's Space Technology 6 thinking spacecraft. Spirit has photographed dozens of dusty whirlwinds in action, and both rovers have photographed clouds. Until now, however, scientists on Earth have had to sift through many transmitted images from Mars to find those few. With the new intelligence boost, the rovers can recognize dust devils or clouds and select only the relevant parts of those images to send back to Earth. This increased efficiency will free up more communication time for additional scientific investigations. To recognize dust devils, the new software looks for changes from one image to the next, taken a few seconds apart, of the same field of view. To find clouds, it looks for non-uniform features in the portion of an image it recognizes as the sky. Another new feature, called visual target tracking, enables a rover to keep recognizing a designated landscape feature as the rover moves. Khaled Ali of NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Pasadena, Calif., flight software team leader for Spirit and Opportunity, said, The rover keeps updating its template of what the feature looks like. It may be a rock that looks bigger as the rover approaches it, or maybe the shape looks different from a different angle, but the rover still knows it's the same rock. Visual target tracking can be combined with a third new feature -- autonomy in calculating where it is safe to reach out with the contact tools on the rover's robotic arm. The combination gives Spirit and Opportunity a capability called go and touch, which is yet to be tested on Mars. So far in the mission, whenever a rover has driven to a new location, the crew on Earth has had to evaluate images of the new location to decide where the rover could place its contact instruments on a subsequent day. After the new software has been tested and validated, the crew will have the option of letting a rover choose an arm target for itself the same day it drives to a new location. The new software also improves the autonomy of each rover for navigating away from hazards by building better maps of their surroundings than they have done previously. This new capability was developed by Carnegie Mellon University, Pittsburgh, and JPL. Before this, the rovers could only think one step ahead about getting around an obstacle, said JPL's Dr. John Callas, project manager for the Mars Exploration Rovers. If they encountered an obstacle or hazard, they'd back off one step and try a different direction, and if that direction didn't work they'd try another, then another. And sometimes the rover could not find a solution. With this new capability, the rover will be smarter about navigating in complex terrain, thinking several steps ahead. It could back out of a dead-end cul-de-sac. It could even find its way through a maze. This is the most comprehensive of four revisions to the rovers' flight software since launch. One new version was uplinked during the cruise to Mars, and the rovers have switched to upgraded versions twice since their January 2004 landings. Callas said, These rovers are a great resource for testing software that could be useful to future Mars missions without sacrificing our own continuing mission of exploration. This new software will be a baseline for development of flight software for Mars Science Laboratory, but it's also helpful in operating Spirit and Opportunity. NASA's Mars Science Laboratory is a next-generation Mars rover in development for planned launch in 2009. Spirit and Opportunity have worked on Mars for nearly 12 times as long as their originally planned prime missions of 90 Martian days. Spirit has driven about 6.9 kilometers (4.3 miles); Opportunity has driven about 9.8 kilometers (6.1 miles). Spirit has returned more than 88,500 images, Opportunity more than 80,700. All the raw images are available online at http://marsrovers.jpl.nasa.gov/gallery/all/ . Currently, Spirit is investigating rocks and soils near a ridge where it kept its solar panels tilted toward the sun during the Martian winter. Opportunity is exploring Victoria Crater, where cliffs in the crater wall expose rock layers with clues about a

Re: [meteorite-list] Weird pic...Apollo 14
Hi all - When dealing with the man did not walk on the Moon nuts (and for these folks man did not walk on the Moon because either 1) they did not see the reamins of another civilization there, or 2) NASA was hiding the real astronauts, who did see the remains, by staging fake landings Ahem,as I was saying... When dealing with the man did not walk on the Moon nuts, I simply tell them that NASA lied to them about the flim used, and that it was really recon film which was loaded in the astronauts cameras. These folks usually readliy accept that NASA lied to them, and given the premise the consequence follows: man walked on the Moon. If questioned, I tell them to take a roll of kodachrome or ektachrome, put it in the referigerator, then put it in an oven, and see how it works. Then imagine doing it in a vacuum. If they're really stubborn, I ask them if they remember Kodak running any ads claiming that now you could buy the same film used on the Moon, like Tang. They don't, and end of arguement. good hunting, Ed --- [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Sterling, Your explanation about the Apollo 14 photograph is correct. During the Apollo 14 mission I was the Mission Science Advisor for the A-14 mission in the Lunar Receiving Laboratory. I participated in the Apollo 14 crew debriefings with Alan Sheppard, Ed Mitchell and Stuart Rousa along with the backup crew of Gene Cernan and Joe Engle. During the debriefs, all of the mission photographs were examined and detailed discussions were held with the crew (across a quarantine barrier window) regarding their surface activities and what was displayed in the images. We discussed the particular photograph of the ALSEP station with the blue streak above the horizon. The crew commented that it was difficult to not get sun reflections in the camera. In fact, there were additional images from the surface photographs which had smaller streaks above the horizon. The debriefings were an amazing experience, expecially when Ed Mitchell and Al Sheppard began pulling lunar rocks from a large white bag. Lunar samples 14301 thru 14321 were loosely stowed inside the bag. The samples were laid out on a table which had been covered with aluminum foil. Sample 14321 was the size of a soccer ball and the largest lunar sample returned from the mission. It was given the name Big Bertha. Hope these comments help clarify the situation with the streaks in the photograph. Re: [meteorite-list] Weird pic...Apollo 14
Hi, Considerable information about the photographic aspects of the Apollo missions can be found at: http://history.nasa.gov/apollo_photo.html The films were all supplied by Kodak on thin substrates so that the maximum number of shots could fit in each Hassy film magazine. The basic handheld camera was the Hasselblad 500EL. Each film magazine would typically yield 160 color or 200 BW. Kodak was asked by NASA to develop thin new films with special emulsions... [Some] magazines were loaded with 70 mm wide, perforated Kodak Panatomic-X fine-grained, 80 ASA, b/w film, [some] with Kodak Ektachrome SO-68, [some] with Kodak Ektachrome SO-121, and [some] with super light- sensitive Kodak 2485, 16,000 ASA film. Panatomic X, no longer made, was a single layer emulsion with very fine grain, and could be developed as a positive or negative image. Sadly, there are no such (single-layer) films made any more, that I know of. (It was my favorite.) The cameras were extensively modified to work in vacuum and under lunar conditions: When film is normally wound in a camera, static electricity is generated on the film surface. This electricity is dispersed by metal rims and rollers, which guide the film, and by humidity in the surrounding air. In the lunar surface camera, however, the film was guided by the Reseau plate's [where the little crosshairs were engraved] raised edges. As glass is a poor electrical conductor, and with the absence of surrounding air, the charge built up between the glass surface and the film could become so great that sparks could occur between the plate and the film. In order to conduct the static electricity away and prevent sparking, the side of the plate facing the film was coated with a thin transparent conductive layer and silver deposited on the edges of the conductive layer. The electrical charge was then led to the metallic parts of the camera body by contact springs. Worthy of note there is that static discharges produce so-called film defects, but not the kind seen in the A14 67-9384 photo. The cameras also had lengthened and oversized controls so you could manipulate them wearing big fat gloves! The EL model had an electric motor that advanced the film and cocked the shutter automatically, so all you had to do in your big fat gloves was set the f-stop, set the exposure, set the focus, and press the shutter release. That's enough to keep you busy on the Moon. Freezing will not harm film, as long as it is allowed to gradually return to normal temperatures before it is used. In fact, freezing will preserve film in perfect condition for decades. Photographers fanatically devoted to Kodachrome 25 froze cases of it when it was discontinued and have been using it (or selling it) ever since. (Kodachrome 64 was too red-sensitive for them.) High temperatures are deadly to film's true color reproduction, however, hence the reflective camera bodies in those Hassy 500EL's. I don't see any sign of heat degradation in any Apollo photos, so I guess it worked. On the other hand, locking your car on a summer day with the black camera laying on the dash or in direct sunshine anywhere inside the car is a sure invitation to vacation photos with purple mountains, purple grass, purple road signs, purple people... The outer surface of the 500EL data camera was colored silver to help maintain more uniform internal temperatures in the violent extremes of heat and cold encountered on the lunar surface. Lubricants used in the camera mechanisms had to either be eliminated or replaced because conventional lubricants would boil off in the vacuum and potentially could condense on the optical surfaces of the lenses, Reseau plate, and film. The mention of special lubricants brings up a non-photographic point of some interest. A camera is a lightweight box with two rollers in it and very low levels of force being used. We are working on returning to the Moon and building a base there. Presumably, we will also do that on Mars, and later, eventually, other places. We're not going to be able to do very much building (or digging or mining or much of anything) using nothing but the human muscles of astronauts. No, we're going to need heavy machinery and lots of it. A survivable lunar base will need to be buried in the lunar surface or covered with feet of lunar soil or both. What sort of lubricants will be needed for a lunar bulldozer? Or a Martain back-hoe? What will protect axles, gears, drives, etc., under loads of tons of force and yet work at minus 250 F? What seal materials will function reliably for months or years on an exposed outer airlock door that goes from minus 250 F. to plus 250 F. every two weeks? Or even on a wheel bearing? The sad truth is that nobody knows. We can't even get heavy machinery to work reliably in the puny Antarctic winter where it hardly ever dips below minus 100 F and is never in a vacuum.
