Re: [meteorite-list] Tucson Show and Birthday Bash!!

2007-02-06 Thread Moni Waiblinger-Seabridge
Hi All,

I had such a wonderful time at Tucson, my very first time after 5 years of
enjoying my passion for meteorites!
I will be forever grateful to Bob V. to introduce me to this great hobby
because I am so delighted to have met so many of you in Tucson!
What a diverse group and so much in common!
Also some new people I have met, I recommended to them to join this list.

Ensisheim was wonderful too and I hope to go back there also!
But Tucson, it was fantastic!

I met so many members that I have written to on the list and I am so happy
to finally have met you!
Missed Art though!
I actually didn't recognize Mexico Doug, we argued for fun on who he really
was!
And also McCartney.
I thought he lived in the UK.
He had to convince me that, no, he lives in Texas!!
The Chladni's Heir made it - what pleasure to meet Martin again!
And finally Andreas and Stefan.
I really hope you will come again next year!

The birthday bash was too much fun.
Happy Birthday Geoff and Steve!
The awards rightfully given to the deserving people!
I know if I would mention all the people I had conversations with, I would
forget one or two.
So I want to thank all of you for being great meteorite enthusiasts and wish
you well.

I hope some of you who haven't been to Tucson to join us next year, you will
have a great time!

I am sending my yahoo photos URL in case some of you want to see some
pictures.
Some of them are taken while driving and are not the best.

With best regards,
Moni

[meteorite-list] MISSOURI, ILLINOIS FIREBALL ALSO SEEN IN KANSAS, MINNESOTA

2007-02-06 Thread Sterling K. Webb
Hi, List,

We now have reports from all or parts of Missouri,
Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Arkansas, and Minnesota
of the Superbowl Meteor (3rd Quarter)!
Here's the Kansas report (below). Interesting that it
contains accounts of rumbling and popping noises when
the object being described is likely 400 miles or more away!
It must be an instance of the much-argued-about indirect
generation of meteor sounds, electrophonically:
http://science.nasa.gov/headlines/y2001/ast26nov_1.htm
The reports seem to span about 1200 kilometers
which my rusty trigonometry tells me must mean that
the object lit up at a minimum of 42 miles up, probably
at 50+ miles up. It must have been big, or steep, or fast,
or all three in some degree.
I'm beginning to suspect it was a big one. We have two
factors that inhibit the likely number of observations:
1.) very cold weather, and 2.) the distraction of the Superbowl!
Yet, there seem to be no shortages of reports. It was even
called a flood of reports in the St. Louis area.

Sterling K. Webb

http://www.kansascity.com/mld/kansascity/news/local/16630902.htm

Aerial sight was a meteor
One mystery remains . where did the falling object end up?
By KEVIN MURPHY
The Kansas City Star
That dazzling object seen falling from the sky
over Missouri, Kansas and other Midwestern states
Sunday evening was a meteor, though where it
ended up is uncertain, experts said.
Many people reported seeing the round, orange
object or hearing a thunderlike sound, some of them
while watching the Super Bowl on TV.
Astronomers and space buffs said Monday the
description was consistent with either a meteor or
debris that sometimes falls to Earth from old spacecraft.
The North American Aerospace Defense Command,
however, determined Monday that the object was not
man-made but rather a meteor, spokesman Michael
Kucharek said. The command monitors the re-entry
of man-made debris.
People from Kansas to Minnesota to Indiana
saw the object. Locally, the time of the reports
varied from shortly after 7 p.m. to closer to 8 p.m.,
indicating there may have been more than one.
Tom Pisciotta of Kansas City said he was
driving home on the Kansas Turnpike south
of Emporia when he saw a large orange fireball
fall from the sky and disappear over the horizon
to the northeast. It had a tinge of green, he said.
Patty Brasell was heading home early from
a Super Bowl party at 151st Street and Mission
Road in Leawood when she and a friend also
saw the falling round, orange object with a bright
white tail.
It was an incredible sight and really wonderful,
Brasell said.
Several people in the Kearney and Liberty areas
said they heard periodic popping and rumbling
sounds coming from outside.
I thought it was a neighbor shooting off fireworks,
said Richard Specker of Kearney. Others thought
the sound was an explosion.
Russ Bixby of Leavenworth County was not
far from home when he saw the meteor fall and
then disappear with a flash, as if it had hit ground.
It was one of the more impressive things I have
ever seen, Bixby said.
Randy Korotev, research associate professor
of Earth and planetary science at Washington
University in St. Louis, said a flash doesn't mean
a meteor landed. Meteors can flash while bursting
apart in the sky, he said.
The rumbling sounds people heard, he said,
were probably sonic booms.
Meteors that reach the Earth are usually never
found because the Earth is covered mostly by
water and undeveloped land.
Steve Arnold, noted for finding a pallasite
meteorite in Kansas in 2005, said pinpointing
where a meteorite lands is very difficult.
These things will burn out 12 miles or so
above the Earth, Arnold said. If someone
is in Emporia and it looks like it disappears
over the horizon, it could literally be in Illinois.
It's an optical illusion that it looks super near.
It sounds like you guys got a light show a
dozen other states got.

What Darren said is how I understand it too. As for
1cm particles, nah This shield is designed to protect
against micrometeorids travelling at a relative speed
of 20km/s. It'll not protect you from big stuff though
I suppose the relative speeds of orbital debris is
likely travelling much slower.

Even so, wouldn't fancy their chances against a pea
sized bit of weather sat even if it ONLY had a
collision speed of 1000m/s

Dear Listees,

For those of you who are interested in the full recovery story of Oued el

Should you like to download the PDF of this article that also tells some more
stories of Michel's hunting in the Sahara, you can follow the link:

This is not exactly honest but, I am told The trick is to buy some legit
minerals from a gem shop, dump them and put the meteorites in the gem box, then
you have a receipt for some rocks, a shop bag etc when you go through customs,
 - And unless they have a PHD in meteorite geology and an SEM machine ...
your covered. - with coins the old one about putting the coins in your wallet
with your small change.

Personally I'd probably look so guilty I'd been found out instantly - so I'll
leave it to others!!

other countries.
Would Greece be similar to Turkey?
I guess you are sure about the fact that meteorites fall in the categery of

Personally I can somewhat confirm (or not?) such matters from Turkey, as I also
was there during the eclipse last sping, see:
http://home.online.no/~bsoerhei/astro/eclipse/060329/Phaselis.html

Meteorites was not on my mind during the stay, but my interest in stones and
geology made me pick up about one kg of typical pebbles and small stones at the
southernmost beach, where the eclipse path crossed into Turkey from the south.

I had a fully packed rucksack with my eclipse equipment and everything at the
airport. As I had brought about 14.5 kg to Turkey the added stones brought the
weight over 15 kg, so overweight. I don't know if that was the reason, but I
was ordered to leave the sack at another counter than the rest.
I didn't see it before arriving to Norway, so they must have checked it
especially.

Anyway, all the stones were there still, and it didn't look like they had gone
through the sack either.
I don't know what the conclusion would be here, but at least they don't seem to
be going after ordinary stones.

[meteorite-list] Tucson 2007

2007-02-06 Thread Jan Bartels
Dear Listoids,

Just home from the tucson show and reading all the posts on the list of
the people who are still thererrrrrrhhh.
We sure were happy to meet old friends and also for sure many new ones.
Marvin and Kitty Killgore kindly invited us for the past two weeks in
their home, first one week in Payson and the last week in Tucson during
the show.

As always it was a blast!! The Birthdaybash just fantastic. The funny
thing is that this time we did not return with to many meteorites but with
a huge jaw of a great white shark. besides meteorites, we have a
respectable shark jaw collection as well.

In the week we spend in Payson we went to the Meteor Crater again where we
got married two years ago and also went by the ruins of the old meteorite
museum.
The whole area was covered with snow and was an awesome experience.

At the museum we collected some of the curved glass fragments which can be
seen on the old pictures of the museum when it was still intact. If any of
you never been to the ruins before but still would like a nice souvenir
let us know and we'll send a piece to you which measures about 2 inch in
square. We have about ten pieces so respond off list quickly to be sure
you'll get one of them.

For those stil at the show..have fun!! And for those who never went
there.go next year...it's awesome!!

coin, not token as most “meteorite coins” are) was a stony meteorite, the
second an iron so a stony-iron seemed a logical next step.

By using the olivine crystals, we will be sidestepping any problems that
collectors may have towards Brenham (mind you, the recent Brenham Meteorite
Company finds seem quite stable overall).

Preliminary designs have the coin featuring a Buffalo (or Bison). The
demand for Buffalo coins, since the 2004 nickels have skyrocketed and since
this will be the first one with a US meteorite, I think they will be quite
popular.

Production of this coin, right now, is set at only 1,000 coins...the same as
the Nantan coin which sold out instantly and a good share of these will be
acquired by the Kansas Meteorite Society.

Because of this fact, and that I would like everyone to have a chance to
acquire one, I will be offering them for sale when they are first available
so if you are interested in them, let me know and I will put you on a
contact list. Cost of the coins should be around $60.00, and I will
guestimate it will be six months before they are ready. As time goes by I
will know more.

Another added bonus (perhaps?) by getting one from me is I can hand sign the
certificates…which like the first two will come certified by me with a
printed signature.

So does this mean that the coin could be taken to a store in the country of
issue and the store will be required to take the coin at face value to pay for
goods or services, and be able to exchange that coin at a bank for said face
value? Because if you can't spend it in the country of issue just like any

2007-02-06 Thread Alexander Seidel
Apart from the few nice videos that McCartney Taylor kindly provided for the
list, there has been very little photo coverage of the Tucson event so far on
this forum - as compared to recent years. I think it would be great fun for us
listees, who had to stay at home, to see some pics taken e.g. on the occasion
of the Arnold/Notkin birthday party, some pics covering the two big meteorite
auctions (Alan Lang, Michael Blood), or other pics of meteorite people at the

Hello Darren and list,

The first coin has a $10.00 face value in Libya backed by the National Bank
of Liberia, the second has a $5.00 face value backed by the government of
the Republic of Palau. I am not sure where the third coin will come from at
this time, as that is being worked out. At this time, the project has been
approved and that is where we are. I am excited about this one more then
the others so I went ahead and announced it. (The last tow times I waited
until dealers had time to get them in stock before posting).

This is no different then if you bought one of the 1986 $1 Statue of Liberty
coins here in the US. That is a legal tender coin as well. Mind you,
someone at your local 7-11 might not understand the Statue of Liberty coin
is a legal tender coin, but that doesn’t change the fact that it is. Worst
case, if you can’t find anyone who knows funny US coins you might have to
take to a National Bank, but I do not know the commerce laws in all
countries so I will not pretend I do.

The Statue of Liberty coin and the previous meteorite coins are made of
silver, so you would be pretty stupid for exchanging it for face value. (The
Brenham coin will also be made of silver).

Hi List
I just wanted to express that my thoughts are certainly with
Astronaut Lisa Nowak, her family, friends and co-workers as she now

Hello Michael,

of course you're right, I felt the same when reading such news and
especially when comparing the photos of Lisa Nowak as Astronaut with the
actual ones. Very moving indeed.

Obviously she was a woman with an unusual strong and stable mind, otherwise
she wouldn't have travelled to Space. Probably you're right regarding the
possible dramatic changes of such a trip to the border. On the other hand -
even extraordinary human beings can be changed dramatically just by life.
Doesn't need necessarily a Space Odyssee ...

Let's wish the very best for her following up her way. We'll never forget
that she was one of our rare ambassadors in Space for a while. A pioneer.

All best,

Matthias Baermann

Re: [meteorite-list] MISSOURI, ILLINOIS FIREBALL ALSO SEEN IN KANSAS, MINNESOTA

2007-02-06 Thread Sterling K. Webb
Hi, Steve,

Speed of sound in air varies with the temperature
of the air, 331.4 meters/second plus 0.6 times Temp
(in C), but for government work, just figure 4 seconds
to the mile. For the 600 miles from above Wisconsin
to the middle of Kansas, 2400 seconds or 40 minutes.
From the St. Louis area to Kansas, 20 minutes! From
the St. Louis area to Liberty, MO, 15 minutes! Steal
an F-18 from Boeing in St. Louis and you could beat
the sound there.

Lightspeed propagation delay, from above Wisconsin
to the middle of Kansas? About 2 milliseconds! From the
St. Louis area to Kansas? About 1 millisecond! Completely
imperceptible. Particularly as the delay to SEE it is the same
as the delay to HEAR it! Sight and Sound (via VLF waves)
arrive at the same time -- No Delay.
http://science.nasa.gov/headlines/y2001/ast26nov_1.htm

It really does happen. Makes reports confusing to sort
out. At the terminal point, sight and sound (of termination)
are virtually simultaneous. Further out, there's a delay between
them. Further out still, there's no sound. Still further out,
sound returns as the VLF electrophonic sounds, which
are not produced by the the termination event but by the
trail leading to it, are received.

The sequence with distance is big noise, less noise,
no noise, then different noise: hissing, snapping, frying
bacon, rumbling, muttering, crackling, at great distances.
Whether or not that electrophonic sound is heard depends
if and what kind of receivers are on the ground around
the hearer.

We don't really know the full range of sounds that
can be produced electrophocially. And their simultaneity
makes the sound accepted as sound automatically.
Wow! You heard it, too? How far can physical sound
waves be detected? The first atom bomb (0.018 MegaTon)
was heard 215 miles away. Tunguska was heard 600 to
800 miles away. (This one wasn't that loud!)

As the magnitude increases, the sound wave and the
shock wave are the same thing. Hours after Chicxulub,
on the other side of the planet, sleeping dinosaurs are
rudely awakened by What the Hell was THAT?

But the REALLY big news is that a reporter got
a quote right!

Hello Sterling and List,

Someone do the math for me, how long would it take for noise
to travel from the Saint Louis area to Liberty Missouri?

If they heard something at the same time they saw something,
I would have to be a bit skeptical from that distance. It might
be a coincidence or some active imaginations.

It is possible that the noise did occur at an appropriate delayed
time after the visual light appearance.

Oh, and by the way, I am not sure if the rest of Murphy's story
is correct, but I want to go on the record as saying that he did
get my quote right.

[meteorite-list] Walter Branch Recovery Donations

2007-02-06 Thread JKGwilliam
Hello List,
After reading the bad news about Walter and his daughter, I called Maria
Haas who was in Tucson attending the Gem Mineral Show to tell her the
news. Being the good soul that she is, she came up with the idea to
collect donations to assist Walter and his family during this trying
situation.

Maria spent the better part of two days collecting donations from meteorite
folks attending the Show and was delighted to find that members of the
meteorite community were quite generous.

During a phone conversation with Maria on Monday ( she was hunting
meteorites in Holbrook with Dave Andrews and Larry Mr. Lucky Atkins), she
asked if I'd post this message to the Met. List since she is away from her
computer.

Anyone who would like to donate money to assist Walter Branch and his
family can do so through Maria. She has a Premiere Paypal account, so she
can accept payments made with Visa, Master Card, E-Checks, etc. If you
prefer to mail donations to Maria that is possible too. Here is her Paypal
account e-mail and also her mailing address.

She won't be home from her trip to Arizona/Nevada until late on Saturday,
February 10, 2007. So if you try to contact her, don't expect a reply
until then.

From the description of the injuries, I'm guessing Walter's recovery will
be a long process. I've never met him in person, but have been in contact
with him for pretty close to 10 years. I'm sure that those of you who know

[meteorite-list] Meteorite found, per local press

2007-02-06 Thread R Juhl
The Belleville, Illinois local newspaper ran the below article with a
photo of the suspected meteorite over the midwest.

-

It's a bird, it's a plane, it's a ... meteor rock?
BY WALLY SPIERS
News-Democrat
This rock was found by Nancy Rettinghouse, 60, of Fairview Heights, in
a lot near her home.
Derik Holtmann/News-Democrat
This rock was found by Nancy Rettinghouse, 60, of Fairview Heights, in
a lot near her home.

* Earlier story: Flaming objects seen in sky

Nancy Rettinghouse had some of her family over to watch the Super Bowl
on Sunday night but she ended up watching a much brighter spectacle.

I was sitting in my kitchen, watching the Super Bowl, she said. Out
in the back lot I saw a big yellow flaming thing falling straight
down. I yelled and everyone asked what happened.

When she told them she thought she had seen a meteor fall into a
nearby vacant lot, no one believed her.

They said, 'Oh, Mom, it was just a light.' But I saw what I saw,
said Rettinghouse, 60, of Fairview Heights.

That happened about 8 p.m., she said. When they watched the television
news at 10 p.m. she heard about many reports about bright lights in
the sky from area residents. Most authorities think it was a minor
meteor shower.

So my husband went over to look around this morning and he found this
odd rock, she said. We'd sure like to know what it was.

The reddish rock her husband found is about 2.25 inches long by 1.5
inches wide and an inch tall. It was embedded about one-half inch in
the ground of the lot, which usually is a garden.

There are lots of meteorite identification sites on the Internet.
Several have categories labeled meteorites and meteorwrongs, catch
words for real meteorites or deceptive Earth rocks.

Perhaps the best Web site is www.meteorites.wustl.edu by Randy Korotev
of the Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences at Washington
University in St. Louis.

Any rock coming through the atmosphere would be melted on the outside
by the intense heat, showing signs of what they call a fusion crust.
Meteorites usually contain metals that will attract a magnet although
that is not always the case.

Their rock had neither of those things.

I did see something fall in the lot, she said.

There appeared to be nothing else on the lot. But perspective can be a
confusing thing. The view out the kitchen window is to the west and
the last few feet of the view of the lot is obscured by a 6-foot-tall
fence which stands about 100 feet away.

I don't want anyone to think we were drinking or something,
Rettinghouse said. It sure will be embarrassing if it's not real. We
just want to know.

She said they probably will take the rock to someone who is an expert
to have it identified.

-

 It's a bird, it's a plane, it's a ... meteor rock?

Hello Robert,

It obviously is not a metorite. I spoke with Wally Spiers, the writer, this
morning and he didn't seem to think it was, so I imagine he was just doing
his job and covering the local story.

As if educating people about the difference between meteors, meteoroids,

[meteorite-list] NASA TV Commercial

2007-02-06 Thread Greg Hupe
Hi Listees,

I was just watching The Science Channel and there was a commercial by NASA
stating they have just tested a Ground Penetrating Radar on a farm, found a
154 pound meteorite and that the technology will be used in future Mars
missions. Towards the end, there is a picture of a farmer holding a pitch
fort with a disgruntled look on his face. The narrator then goes on and
says, ...and the farmer would like Mars to quit throwing its space junk in
his field.

This commercial is referring to when NASA tested this equipment on the farm
that team Arnold/Mani have been finding Brenham meteorites on. Pretty cool
commercial even though it was a stunt farmer they used :-)

Best regards,
Greg

Hi, Greg, List,

it was a stunt farmer they used :-)

Now there's something you don't see on
every resume:

Occupation: Stunt Farmer

I like that... It's something you could toss into
casual conversation: I used to be a Stunt Farmer,
until I injured my pitchfork hand...

[meteorite-list] Bandli's Tucson Pics

This was my first pilgrimage to Tucson. I wanted to do the picture journal

Thank you to Katharine Manning, Qynn Arnold, and Geoff's Cindy for keeping
